My FoxInternet social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook are popular places for people to reconnect. But as more people are logging on to use them, more and more scammers are too.
Facebook has become a hackers' dream. These cyber thieves are using personal information posted on Facebook and pretending to be you looking for cash.
It happened to Rayna Holley Letterman. She now lives in Germany and posted a lot of pictures of her trips around Europe on Facebook. So when her Facebook friends started getting messages from Letterman saying she was robbed and stranded in London and needed money, it wasn't such a far-fetched idea.
"It would be totally possible for us to be in London and get robbed. I was worried some of my Facebook friends would send money to the guy," Letterman said.
One of those friends, Antonio Parkinson got the false distress message asking for money. "[It] looks so legitimate ... I think they are duping people out there and there's a pressure in their approach in getting their money."
Parkinson didn't fall for it, but said the message from the fake Letterman really pulled on the heartstrings.
