Multi-Species Hatchery To Breed
Tilapia, 'Hito, Dalag, Ulang, Puyo'
The first private-sector initiated Multi-Species Hatchery for the commercial production of Hybrid Tilapia, Guramei and Catfish and conservation of selected threatened endemic species like the Native Hito, Freshwater Ulang, Dalag and Puyo is expected be operational before the end of this year.
Established by a small company, Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc. which I, former Senator Panfilo Lacson, Rocky French and four other friends formed recently, the Multi-Species Hatchery is located in Kidapawan City.
Banking on the expertise of Filipino-American farmer-scientist Rocky French, the SAAV Inc. Hatchery and Nursery aims to produce outstanding and good quality fry and fingerlings to boost the production of freshwater fish species especially in communities surrounding the 250,000-hectare Liguasan Marsh.
SAAV Inc. Chairman Ping Lacson has asked Rocky French to breed Native Hito (sn. Clarias macrocephalus), the Giant Freshwater Prawn (sn. Macrobrachium rosenbergii), Dalag (sn. Chianna striata) and Puyo (sn. Anabas testudineus), species which are already threatened by the use of agricultural chemicals and illegal fishing.
While this would largely be a conservation breeding, fingerlings of the native HIto, Puyo and Dalag and Ulang post-larvae will also be made available for commercial production.
Rocky French is an aquaculturist who spent the last 40 years breeding and developing Tilapia and was instrumental in training the personnel and technical staff of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) when I was Secretary of Agriculture.
