Disable Prefetch for low memory systems

Disable Prefetch for low memory systems

If your system only has about 256megs of RAM or less, the Windows XP Prefetch can take a lot of this up by preloading programs at boot as well as preloading programs you often use thus sucking away your available RAM.

On my old PC, a Celeron 2.4 Ghz with 256 megs of RAM, I was able to greatly boast my system performance by disabling Prefetch all together.

Note:  This tweak worked for this user and their system configuration but disabling prefetch on other systems may have a bad effect as it might free up ram but it also could increase program start up time.

Here's how to disable Prefetch.

1. run "regedit";
2. goto [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\EnablePrefetcher];
3. Set the value to either 0-Disable.
4. reboot.

Increase speed by tweaking prefetcher settings

This is an unique technique for XP, which could improve the performance significantly by tweaking the prefetcher (which is a cache folder).

1. run "regedit";
2. goto [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\EnablePrefetcher];
3. Set the value to either 0-Disable, 1-App launch prefetch, 2-Boot Prefetch, 3-Both ("3" is recommended).
4. reboot.

It should decrease the boot time and the time it takes to load programs.

Ghost,

If your DDR is 512, I think we don't need this option? What do you think?

Maybe...but as time goes by, you can not expect your hardware to function like those of the brand news so definitely you'll need this option somehow...heheheheheh

I have an e-book that explores everything about XP. I stop reading it when Vista was released.
Windows Fiji/Fuji is on the way. Expected date of release is 2009.
