The newest ship to join the Philippine Navy, the BRP Ramon Alcaraz, formerly the USCGS Dallas, a Hamilton-Class Frigate serving in the United States Coast Guard. The Philippine Navy recently received its first Hamilton-Class in December of 2011 (BRP Gregorio Del Pilar), and the BRP Ramon Alcaraz are but two of the planned 8 USCG Cutters that are to join the Philippine Navy. The Philippine Navy plans to purchase and add surface to air, ship to ship missile defense systems platforms in these ships to boost its defense ability.
The United States is arming the Philippines in the attempt to help the Philippines, a former US colony, defend its territory against an encroaching China.
