The Internet never forgets
« on: November 04, 2010, 08:21:14 PM »
Mai Mislang’s now-infamous Tweeting about sucky wine, ugly men and the dangerous streets of Hanoi will now go down in history as one of the dumbest things any presidential speechwriter and member of a diplomatic entourage has ever done.
Way to go, Team Pilipinas. It’s already hard enough to get respect in the world arena, and we got Manny Pacquiao and Charice busting their butts in the realms of sports and entertainment to bring glory to the country. While here we have, in the other corner, the president’s own speechwriter—an assistant secretary at that - creating this controversy by simply posting her discourteous opinions for the world to see.

I can see her now, wine glass(es) in hand (you recall she sampled both red and white), curling her nose up in disdain at the plonk that the Vietnamese dared serve her, then tapping out those fateful 140 characters-or-less for her tweeps. Send.
There are a great many speechwriters out there, more trustworthy, with delicadeza, and with infinitely better writing skills. Mislang is lucky, very lucky indeed, to still have the support of her bosses.

Palace on Mai Mislang issue: Let's move on

MANILA, Philippines - Why can't we all just move on?

It seems that this is what Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda has been trying to say as he renews his pitch for critics of Carmen "Mai" Mislang to get over her allegedly undiplomatic tweets against Vietnam.

After all, Mislang, speechwriter of President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, has already issued an apology for her whining via Twitter about Vietnam's wine, males and busy streets during a state visit.

The people of Vietnam, for their part, seem unruffled by her controversial tweets.

Echoing Vietnam's response to the incident, Lacierda said what Mislang did is "not the most important thing right now" and dismissed it as a "learning experience."

"Mai Mislang obviously had a run in with Mae Paner (the face behind YouTube sensation Juana Change). We should focus on more important aspects of governance," he told ABS-CBN News.

Earlier, deputy Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the 29-year-old deserves a second chance, asking the public to "not let the competence of ASec. Mislang get lost in the noise over this mistake."

She made the statement as some netizens set up hate pages on Facebook, which ranged from funny to downright hurtful.

Currently, Mislang's colleagues under the wing of Presidential communications group secretary Ricky Carandang have been barred from using social media until he comes with specific guidelines. -- With a report from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News

wow!  it looks like we're bound to hear more of the palace yarn of "move on".  every time some of the president's men trip, it's let's-forget-and-move-on time again.  and this mislang is supposed to be part of the team that "packages" the president?  what fine ribbon she's tied the president with.

fire her, and let's move on.  on matters of national and international sensibilities, there are no second chances.  let's face it, she could have been talking/tweeting about her own country.  are our streets any better?  are we better looking?  at 29 years old, can she really be trusted as an oenophile?

fire her, or stop running after the previous president's alleged "crimes" and let's move on if that's the way to go.

Some people think that social media is their personal space, a white wall on which to splash graffiti of their most unrestrained thoughts or give vent to their innermost demons.

Assistant Secretary for Communications Mai Mislang should remember that even completely unknown, untitled persons have gained notoriety overnight worldwide for thoughtless comments to the point of being physically hunted for public lynching. (Forgot the name of the lady from Dubai now--but the furor stopped only when people vouched that somebody hacked her account and maliciously attributed that comment to her.)

This is not a simple lapse of judgment. I guess it calls into question her ability to make any sound judgment at all.

I followed Mai Mislang on Twitter even before she became a presidential speechwriter. Then, suddenly, her tweets have became few and far between. I haven't read her "wine sucks" tweet. But it was only when her controversial tweet broke out in the media that I learned about her speechwriting work. And I guess this explains why her tweets became scarce. Ironically, when she started tweeting again, it gave her disastrous results.

I will miss her sweet tweets (sob).

The discordant notes Ms. Mislang tweeted have added to the widespread impression that the new administration is being run by clueless amateurs. (One might espy a fossil or two, though.)
