The Bohol Chronicle vs Mayor Dan Lim: A Protracted War
« on: February 15, 2009, 09:23:17 AM »
By Sunday Post

Tagbilaran Mayor Dan Lim yesterday said he is surprised by the “vicious” reaction of the Bohol Chronicle to the letter of City Treasurer Visitacion Acero.

“Is there reason for them to be angry just because they received a collection letter?” the mayor asked.

Lim said that the normal reaction of a taxpayer when receiving a collection letter is to show proof that he has paid by producing his receipt.

Instead of doing that however, the mayor said the Bohol Chronicle became very angry enough to hurl various accusations against him.

“If you have paid your dues, why don’t you just produce your receipt and we will apologize,” he added.

Lim said the various arguments and justifications given by the Chronicle do not mean anything because they are not proofs of payment.

At the same time, the mayor said he is still awaiting any formal notice about the case that the Chronicle said it filed against Acero.

“If they filed it last Friday as they alleged last Sunday, why has there been no formal notice yet?” he asked.

Lim said that if the Chronicle did not file the case but said so in its news, he said this is another proof of dishonesty.

“Even if they filed the case but later than Friday, it is still dishonesty because they are supposed to be accurate about dates,” he added.

The mayor said Acero is eager to answer the charges supposedly filed against her because she knows she is just doing her job.

He added that the Chronicle’s allegation that they pity Acero because she is just being used by the mayor is another “hypocrisy”.

“If they pity her, or if only they have enough decency, they should let her do her job instead of harassing her with the threats of filing cases,” the mayor added.

Lim also disputed the Chronicle’s claim that many businessmen in the city are organizing against the mayor saying only those who do not want to pay taxes and refuse to obey the law are against him.

“Just like there are bad elements in other sectors including the media, there are also bad elements in the ranks of businessmen,” he added.

The mayor said those who do honest business support his advocacy for equal application of the law.

Lim also brushed aside reports that his bitter critics have received threats saying it is strange that the Chronicle immediately attributes the threats to him.

“These people have other enemies so what proofs does the Chronicle have to blame these supposed threats on me?” he asked.

Lim accused the Chronicle of using squid tactics to divert the issue which he insisted is a simple case of tax collection.

The mayor said he will not be intimated by threats, harassments and name-calling because he is merely doing his job.

“I did not ask to become mayor because I want to look good to the media. I am here to serve in the best interest of the people,” he stressed.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
