Airline passengers here will brace for a round of increase of passenger fee from P20 per passenger to a whooping P200 or a
1,000% jack-up described as "excessive."This came after the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines announced to conduct public consultation on the proposed imposition based on the Department Order No. 98-1178, series of 1998, prescribing schedule of fees and charges for alternate international airport and national airport. But date for the public consultation has not been set.
The city council together with various sectors led by Kag. Butchie Zamora are up in arms against this passenger fee hike by passing Resolution No. 09-93, "vehement opposing the ten-fold or one thousand percent of the present rate increase in the passenger service charge to be collected in the
Tagbilaran City Airport."
The council said in its Resolution passed Sept. 4, 2009 pointed out that "such a gargantuan" increase in the said passenger service charge "is highly unconscionable considering that the same is not commensurate to the services to the services available in the Tagbilaran City airport as compared to services available in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport that is charging P200 passenger service charge."
The city council asked the provincial government for support in preventing the imposition and collection of the said charge as can be gleaned in the Resolution furnished to the city mayor, governor and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.
The city council was given notice of public hearing merely "to notify" on the said increase of airport charges.
Tagbilaran City is classified as "principal class 1 airport," according to the Resolution.
The city Resolution was being referred to the committee on public utilities of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan for action.
A passenger who declined to be named, said in an interview why can't the authorities concerned wait for the Panglao airport slated to be constructed within the year. (RVO)
