The province, now becoming a favorite tourist and business haven in this central part of the country, needs a responsive, upgraded police force.

Former Bohol Police Provincial Director SSupt Arturo Evangelista said, “it is still not late for the province to heed his earlier call for the creation of a Special Reaction Unit (SRU) composed of well-equipped and trained operatives.”

Evangelista is a full-blooded Boholano. His father hails from Talibon while his mother is a native of Ubay.

During his more than a year-tenure as police provincial director, Supt Evangelista pushed for the creation of an SRU, patterned from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) units in urban cities.

He submitted a detailed operational plan to the Office of the Governor asking for a budgetary requirement of P8-million for acquisition of facilities and high-tech communication equipments.

The request was however denied. From the time of Evangelista’s transfer, the crime rate in this island-province has since then drastically risen.

Several hold-up robbery groups have surfaced and even have expanded operations to the neighboring Cebu province.

Last month, the Meloy Garcia robbery group was finally arrested after bank security personnel shot it out in a bloody heist at the Bank of Commerce, Tagbilaran branch.

The former Bohol provincial director now heads the Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division (RIDMD) based in Camp Sergio Osmena, Cebu City.

While in Bohol, Evangelista was able to neutralize the dreaded hold-up gangs and was remembered as the creator of the now famous Bohol Tourist Police.

Evangelista lamented the “so much politics” in Bohol.

“Kung aksiyon sana agad ang gagawin, wala yang mga malaking krimen na nangyayari diyan sa Bohol ngayon,” Evangelista said.
