Pressing claim over Sabah
« on: August 09, 2007, 07:50:49 AM »
My fellow brothers and sisters, fellow citizens of the Republic of the Philippines, it is important that we as citizens of the republic must focus on the development of our precious Philippine fatherland, in terms of internal domestic development as well as its preservance in terms of external threats. This too includes the necessity in keeping alive the claims over territories that are clearly part of the Philippines, culturally, geographically and historically speaking.

What I mean to say is that as the Philippines grows and develops in the 21st century, so to must our awareness of the importance of strategic locations in our republic; as the country continues to grow economically (6.9%-7% gdep growth) as well as in population terms (1.7% annual population growth), so too will our demand for land and natural resources. Clearly it is important that the Philippines continues its participation in ASEAN, APEC and other bilateral, multilateral organizations, so to must it press its claims on territories.

The state of Sabah, is currently under control by Federated States of Malaysia, despite the fact that the region was historically under the control of the Sultan of Sulu, who in turn is under the protection of the Government of the Philippines. As a Filipino-American and member of the Filipino American association here in the United States, my collegues in college as well as in graduate school have stressed to other Filipinos of pressing our rightful claim over Sabah in the United Nations as well as in ASEAN. The Philippines must NEVER EVER relinquish our claim of Sabah, lest the Malaysians think that state of Sabah is truly their territory.

Sabah, is the historical link of all Visayans and Mindanao-ans as our language is almost completely identical to that of the people of Sabah.

Please support the Filipino American Association in the United States by pressing our claim over Sabah and the assimilation of Mindanao to Catholic/Christian philippines.

This is OUR land:

A land rich in natural gas, petroleum, zinc, gold, copper, coal, vast reserves of timber.

The land of Sabah is over 76,000 km^2 in area; and has a population over over 2.5 million people. Over HALF of those numbers are Filipinos who settled the area.

Malaysia deported hundreds of Filipinos who overstayed in that country.

'Doy Onic,

Matters in the realm of geopolitics are not of our immediate concern. Circumstances even in our own
province do not bode well for a forthcoming improvements in our social and economic wellbeing.
What with the class of leaders we have and the neo-cacique system prevailing in our present society.

On the national scene, I venture to say that it is even advantageous for us Bol-anons that the national
gov't opts to give a chance that our brother Moros have their cake (and eat it too) by giving them
all for themselves the areas they are claiming (Sulu, Basilan, Maguindanao, & Lanao del Sur) comprosing
of the ARRM provinces. With that, our national gov't would be saving billions of subsidy to ARRM without
transparency in how the funds are disbursed (its like pouring water to a sinkhole). The funds save would
be better off for social services (education, health, paying off the cost in constructing the virtual Talibon
Dam and the prospective inutile Bayongan Dam, etc.) in the non-Muslim areas and the benefits derived
would impinge and trickle to the betterment of the ordinary Bol-anons.

Tinio, ug uban pa nga nagpakabana didto wala pa gyud maka tagamtam ug kalampusan.

In fine, what I beg to pursue is that... we wish to address things that we can pine to accomplish in our
own small sphere of influence!

Good afternoon Varga,

Thank you for your response and what you point out are credible and are indeed areas in which the government should focus on, however there are some things that you said that I firmly am against. First, on the issue of 'giving' the Moros the areas they are claiming for, particularly Sulu, Basilan, Maguindanao, & Lanao del Sur is absurd as this would compromise the gains the Philippines has had in the region--and this action would illustrate the Philippines as a weak country to our neighbours in ASEAN, particularly Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. As a patriotic Filipino-American who has so much pride and love for his Filipino people and the future of my beloved Philippine fatherland, I dare not accept such pessimistic views.

The Philippines is a large country, with almost 100 million people, of course it will take some time to address the finance and standard of living in the Philippines and in our beloved Bohol, but as our economy surges at an unbelievable 7% gdp growth rate, increasing export rates, decreased national debt and increased foreign investments, foreign states such as the United States, Canada, Australia, UK, Germany, France, Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan, China, Singapore etc are increasing their investments in our country. As we speak, our telecommunication industry is growing and is behind only India, there are other areas that our country can work on, however, the Philippines in general is growing.

As we assert our problems in the south and work cooperatively with the United States, we are seen by regional neighbours and by the United States as an active member in the war against terrorism. You know, as an active member in my college's political debate organization, we've discussed the issue within the Philippines---and from the statements of fellow collegians who are political science majors: theyve addressed the impressive role the Philippines has taken up in Asia. It is widely known that the Philippines is America's number 1 ally in Asia--and has always been--there is a great respect among Americans for the unconquerable spirit of the Filipino, and the resiliency of the Philippines.

Nay, good sir, I know in my heart that within 4-5 decades, the Philippines will become a regional power in Asia--and God willing, the south will be assimilated.

Mahal na mahal kita, Pilipinas.

I am happy about you, you really have a good understanding of our country's history.

I am a history major too here in the states and I am thinking of developing my MA thesis about Philippine claim over Sabah.

My family mane is Boncales, San Miguel Bohol is my Ancestarl Place.

My Grand father, Dr Amando Boncales was the First Municipal Health officer of San Miguel Bohol and also he and my grand mom were the one who follow-up in Manila in establishing Sam Miguel as a Township.
 :)
