Miss Earth-USA comments on Philippines goes viral on Internet

MANILA, Philippines – Nasty comments made by a contestant who competed in the just concluded Miss Earth beauty pageant on the social networking site, Facebook, has gone viral, eliciting varied reactions to her post.

“I hardly made it to manila and we already attended a ridiculous tv show. So annoying!!! These people want to touch you and be with you all the time!! I can’t understand a word they say. I can’t wait to go back home. This country is so dirty and noisy. I’m scared to eat!!! What a mess. On a lighter note I don’t see any real competition. Will keep you updated my loves”, according to the post that appeared on the Facebook page of Miss USA Nicole Lynn, which was uploaded before the pageant.

Lynn and other Miss Earth candidates guested in “Wil Time Big Time”, a television program hosted by Willie Revillame.

Lynn went on to lose the competition last December 4 that saw Miss Ecuador’s Olga Alava bag the crown with Miss Philippines’ Athena Mae Duarte Imperial winning the Miss Earth-Water title.

But in a video on the same page, Lynn claimed that her account was hacked and denied making such remarks.

Lynn’s “post” drew varied reactions. Among them:

Laine Palabrica from Antipolo, Rizal posted: “The truth, you speak it.”

John Levin Yalung Angeles from Holy Angel University said, “Well said mate.”

Yoko Cortez Muraoka of De La Salle University in Manila was scathing in her response: “That’s why you didn’t win!”

An anonymous post said: “good thing she didn’t win — she doesn’t deserve to be crowned as Ms. Earth if she would judge every country she will visit. She’s smart in a sense that she fooled the judges in the US who gave her the Ms. Earth USA title, and stupid to rant on FB, and not change her privacy settings.”

Miss Earth USA denies Manila Facebook rant

MANILA, Philippines -- Miss Earth USA Nicole Kelley has denied that she posted negative comments about the Philippines on Facebook, saying that it is “never okay to cyberbully anyone.”

This after several Filipinos turned to Twitter to bash Kelley for allegedly calling the country "dirty and noisy," and its people "annoying."

It all began when Filipino-Norwegian crooner Markki Stroem posted an undated screen capture of the Facebook post that Kelley (Nicole Lynn in real life) allegedly wrote.

The Facebook post read: "I hardly made it to Manila and we already attended a ridiculous TV show. So annoying!!! These people want to touch you and be with you all the time!! I can't understand a word they say. I can't wait to go back home. This country is so dirty and noisy. I'm scared to eat!!! What a mess. On a lighter note, I don't see any real competition."

Stroem told Kelley on Twitter: "How dare you come to my country, and rant after being welcomed with open arms!"

Kelley was in Manila for the Miss Earth 2011 pageant, which was held at the University of the Philippines Theater in Quezon City.

In a video released by the Miss Earth organizers, Kelley said that she was at a community center when the negative remarks were posted online, adding that she was “very disappointed” about what was written.

The video’s upload date is November 18, 2011, but Stroem posted his screen capture on Wednesday.

The video had 1,976 views as of posting time.

“As Miss Earth contestants, we should be appreciating each other and making each other happy instead of pulling each other down,” she said.

“I want to see from now on, from everyone, the girls and the public included…a more positive outlook. No matter what happens, we are all Miss Earth representatives and we are all responsible for what happens to this planet,” she added.

The incident brings to mind comments that actress Claire Danes made about Manila in 1998, which resulted in her being unofficially banned from the city.

She was quoted in Vogue as saying that Manila was a “ghastly and weird city” and in Premiere magazine that the country’s capital “smelled of cockroaches, with rats all over, and that there is no sewerage system, and the people do not have anything—no arms, no legs, no eyes.”

Danes apologized for her words, and said in a statement that her views only reflect poor areas in Manila, where her film "Brokedown Palace" was shot.

She stressed that the Filipino people were "nothing but warm, friendly and supportive" during her stay in the country.
