MANILA, Philippines– The Philippine National Police (PNP) has identified six areas in the country that will serve as pilot areas for “gun-free zones,†as part of the crackdown on loose firearms, PNP Chief Director General Jesus Verzosa said.
The six areas are: Zamboanga City in the south; Baguio City in the north; and three beach resort destinations, Boracay in Aklan province; Panglao in Bohol province; and San Juan, in Batangas province, Verzosa said.
Provisions in the proposed "gun-free zones" include the suspension of permit-to-carry firearms, Verzosa said.
“The display of firearms by uniformed and non-uniformed personnel will also be prohibited so that it will not be alarming to tourists and to maintain a peaceful community,†he added.
Patrolling policemen will not be allowed to carry their firearms in public, he said.
“Yung firearms nandun na lang sa patrol cars nila (The fireamrs will be left in patrol cars),†Verzosa said.
A partial gun ban has been implemented in Zamboanga City, which Verzosa said, helped contain crime in the city.
