MANILA, Philippines– The Philippine National Police (PNP) has identified six areas in the country that will serve as pilot areas for “gun-free zones,” as part of the crackdown on loose firearms, PNP Chief Director General Jesus Verzosa said.

The six areas are: Zamboanga City in the south; Baguio City in the north; and three beach resort destinations, Boracay in Aklan province; Panglao in Bohol province; and San Juan, in Batangas province, Verzosa said.

Provisions in the proposed "gun-free zones" include the suspension of permit-to-carry firearms, Verzosa said.

“The display of firearms by uniformed and non-uniformed personnel will also be prohibited so that it will not be alarming to tourists and to maintain a peaceful community,” he added.

Patrolling policemen will not be allowed to carry their firearms in public, he said.

“Yung firearms nandun na lang sa patrol cars nila (The fireamrs will be left in patrol cars),” Verzosa said.

A partial gun ban has been implemented in Zamboanga City, which Verzosa said, helped contain crime in the city.

OK ra para nako kon mag carry ug firearms ang police with uniform kay kahibawo man ta nga they are on the side of the law, ....ang nag plain clothes lang ang dili pwede kay di man ta makahibawo ug officer ba or civilian....

Gun free then what would you call the first week of January when a british man was a near hit with a paid hit man with two bullets in his own bar?

Alona is becoming skank in my eyes and the local tourism police are no damned angels in there. According to John Ganno who was once the Chief tourism police here in Bohol.

I bet he is happy to be out of that mess.

Foreigners are in a world of hurt as it is we do not have real protection and if we want justice we have to pay for it out of our own pockets even though we are paying barangay taxes and sales taxes living here.
Wlayo Klaro jyud!

Bohol i beg you to please work on training better and more honest policemen and security persons before you invite more foreigners which makes more temtation for foreigners to be eaten up by criminals who are near and afar.

The 500 plus security personel at the ICM wowowee even was not enough to contain some several thousand locals and you want to invite more foreigners here Christ almighty do the studying and get the foundation laid down first for tourist to want to come here and feel safe again.

I scan the blotter often and find on an average 3-4 foreigners being victims of some sort of crimes on a daily basis.

This is deplorable. What are the most common crimes? Theft, I suppose? Since you are the voice of the foreigners in Bohol, you should not relent in bringing this to the attention of authorities, especially to Aumentado and Chatto who are eager to invite more foreigners. Safety first before anything else.

country like ours, like it or not, security is a must.

police visibility is a must.

guns for policemen is a must. if possible, sub-machineguns.

you know what, most Filipinos love to see guns.

when it's carried properly and the policemen bringing it, in cool uniforms, gun would just be like "cell" accessories.

i believe, our policemen are no longer that respected, for another reason: they don't carry themselves beautifully. dagkog tiyan; way awot nga klaro; uniform gum-ok; sapatos hugaw. Look at the PMAers, lovely. girls would even love to take pictures with them. and with guns.

Glacier you have a point.

i wonder how Panglao was chosen of all places?

Great as it is foreigners are sitting ducks inviting such crimes to happen and now its going to be made easier by elimination of firearms! Wlay Klaro Jyud!

We should then tell our tourism honchos to groom up our tourism police to really look good, smart, snappy, and cool in their shoulder-slung guns so that they'll be part of the tourism landscape and attract the free-spending Japanese and Korean ladies. Disqualified ang mga dagko'g tiyan ug maot. SWAP should have its training center somewhere in Panglao. Viewing of their training activities can also be made part of the tourist itinerary.

i've seen cops here where i am working. they look very respectable and presentable. nisamot kay mga tag-as og ilong. way gyuy dagkog tiyan. kung naa man, di pod sama kadako sa atong mga ubang mga pulis.

I have spoken with members of my Bohol Expats and believe me they do not feel any safer knowing that police here will not be carrying fire arms.

I was ready to bring this issue up with governor during governor reports last Friday but I laid in bed thinking how damned disgusted i was in reading this in Tubag I was not able to make it into governor report.

Sorrynot in this day and times am I going to raise looks and feelings over safety. So what to those tourist who are afraid to see a policeman carrying a gun.

OHWELL!!!

If any of you have a constructive way in asking the governor what he thinks about the matter please let me know so I can address him this issue properly.
