Leksyon sa linog

KUMBATI Ni Rico Lucena (Banat) Updated March 15, 2011 12:00 AM

Nagadumdom gid man ako sang sugid sang Appointment in Samarra haw...

A merchant in Baghdad sends his servant to the marketplace for provisions. Shortly, the servant comes home white and trembling and tells him that in the marketplace he was jostled by a woman, whom he recognized as Death, and she made a threatening gesture. Borrowing the merchant's horse, he flees at top speed to Samarra, a distance of about 75 miles, where he believes Death will not find him. The merchant then goes to the marketplace and finds Death, and asks why she made the threatening gesture. She replies, "That was not a threatening gesture, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Baghdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra."

The Philippine government should also install alarm systems all throughout its pacific and south china sea coasts, if not yet done. This is paramount as it will help save millions of lives in all these coastal areas should tsunami occur. The government should NOT only rely on news broadcasts and radio transmissions from one agency concerned to another, confident that people will be warned AHEAD OF TIME. Once tsunami is coming, the PhiVolcs should directly inform the alarm systems management to forewarn people, and not relay information from one agency to another, and the second to the third.

disaster preparedness by all means possible is worth believing in.  we may not escape going to the far beyond when it's our time, but it behooves on every human being to preserve life as we know it, including our own.

thankfully, we filipinos are more creative than we believe.  i will always remember those unknown heroes who went out of their way to save other lives, including lives of pets, during the metro manila disaster that was typhoon pepe.

For me, I think being able to warn people ahead of natural disasters and save lives in return is far more preferred to seeing heroic people searching for life underneath a rubble.

As the tsunami crosses the deep ocean, its length from crest to crest may be a hundred miles or more, and its height from crest to trough will only be a few feet or less. They can not be felt aboard ships nor can they be seen from the air in the open ocean. In the deepest oceans, the waves will reach speeds exceeding 600 miles per hour (970 km/hr). When the tsunami enters the shoaling water of coastlines in its path, the velocity of its waves diminishes and the wave height increases. It is in these shallow waters that a large tsunami can crest to heights exceeding 100 feet (30 m) and strike with devastating force.

Prevention is indeed Ideal, but failing to search for survivors is ghastly. It's just like Medicine.

We try to prevent disease by lecturing patients. If, however the patient has a disease, we then try our best to treat the disease. If the disease is malignant and if the patient becomes terminal (because of the disease), then we give palliative care/ and eventually end-of-life care. We never give up.

So should the rescuers do the same. Never give up.

:)
