Increasing fish production in Bohol
« on: February 12, 2008, 10:36:42 PM »
By Kit Bagaipo
The Bohol Chronicle

Over talks of high prices of fish, two government agencies in the province see the need to increase fish catch and production in the province by 43 percent.

While ruling out the existence of a fish cartel operating here in the province which manipulates the supply of fish and its exorbitant pricing, the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said there is a widening gap between production and consumption of fish here.

Speaking at the Kapihan sa PIA, Engr. Maximiano Servillon and Ghenie Mayol of BAS and BFAR respectively, admitted there is a dwindling fish catch in the province.

Over-fishing and bad practices of commercial fishers here were likewise cited as the cause of the dwindling supply while consumption has significantly gone up.

"Total consumption is simply too big compared to the supply," said Servillon.

mariculture is a promising industry in Bohol.

For a long time, fishing has remained a backward practice, where man hunts fish to eat. Man has successfully domesticated animals for his consumption, but there is not much in teh area of fisheries even if it has been proven that fish culture has become a global trend.

I just wonder why with all the recent technologies and the great water quality in Bohol, not much of out leaders have thought of it, until recently?

Lets all go beyond the medieval age to modern times, Shall we not?

"Speaking at the Kapihan sa PIA, Engr. Maximiano Servillon and Ghenie Mayol of BAS and BFAR respectively, admitted there is a dwindling fish catch in the province."

this fact has been long established. what is surprising is that no one, including people from BAS or BFAR and other government agencies for that matter, is doing anything about it. for the most part, boholanos want to continue relying on fishing (as in hunting) from the sea. fish culture is being done in many places in the country but not in bohol.

any idea why this is so? it is because government, in particular the bohol provincial government, which is supposed to take the initiative in finding a way to fill the need for more fish, is not doing anything to solve the problem.

just an observation: in the towns of dagupan, binmaley, alaminos in pangasinan which are all coastal areas, you will see fishponds along the highway. lots of them. you go to the market and you will see these cultured fish for sale. lots of them.

in effect, the pangasinenses are putting less pressure on their marine environment by raising and eating cultured fish such as bangus and tilapia, and providing their people with the protein that they need.

why can't boholanos do the same???
