Deadly Cortes Market Stalls
« on: January 14, 2009, 10:51:42 AM »
Cortes, a town that is struggling to make a pink identity has come out recently with few government infrastructure projects.

Aside from painting the town pink (ingon si Mayor Jasmin Balistoy nga to commemorate cancer awareness), even the trees at the plaza, the garbage compactor, all public school buildings have the pink paint. Recently, the local government has renovated the market stalls. And yes, they too are pink.

Anyway, there could probably be nothing wrong with using pink as motiff.

What is terribly disturbing  is that the market stalls, thse new government projects do not comply with the national standards.

The stalls, made out of concrete only has one door. Obviously the entrance would also be the fire exit, contrary to the mandates of the National Building Code. This has made the Cortes market stalls fire traps, but they do not trap fire, they trap people.

One can simply see this as one passes by the town market.

Asked why the mayor (who flaunts her being a civil engineer) has allowed it, she said this should discourage stall occupants and tenants to stay overnight on these stalls.

In her words, i could actually glean two things. One, she doesnt give a damn if the law is broken as long as no one stays overninght in these structures. Two, she could not impose discipline and probably could not enforce what the  tenants contract would stipulate.

And when this happens, the easiest way is to play safe. Only one door. No more.

And when a fire breaks, all patrons in a stall would have to jam through that door, the unlucky ones would be grilled.

And the Bureau of Fire Protection, what has it done? Actually, i do not know, but i guess BFP has not really seen the blueprints, because had they, i know it would never be allowed.

So here we are, patrons of an internet cafe in Cortes Public Market, making sure we get the last PC near the door, because come any spark, i would definitely go through that door well ahead.

One more sad thing, next to this internet cafe is a stall that has become a stockpile for Liquified Petroleum Gas!

Oh, my!  Is this the reason why it has to be painted pink, as in cancer? that deadly?  Just asking.

So the long term illness (at 10% probability) commemmoration was given more importance and awarenesss than the ever so obvious one door exit danger. Brilliant.

why i say 10%? cause Boholanons have a healthy diet and environment. Not that prone to cancer causes.
