The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has meted out a P100,000 fine on Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots’ forward Calvin Abueva for mocking San Miguel Beermen Head Coach Jorge Gallent during Game 2 of the Commissioner’s Cup Finals on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The said incident happened during the 9:52 mark of the fourth quarter where Abueva was seen making a gesture that mocked Gallent’s eye condition.
The SMB coach lost his right eye in a motorcycle accident in 1988.
In an article posted on its official website, PBA emphasized that under its rules, “any person who offends the dignity of any person on account of ‘physical disability’ shall be subject to a fine of not lower than P 100,000.”
Abueva informed PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial that he had already apologized to Gallent following the incident.
Meanwhile, Abueva and San Miguel forward Mo Tautuaa also appeared at the PBA office today after being summoned by the league following the shouting match that took place after Game 2.
“Abueva apologized to the PBA and to Tautuaa and his wife. Nagkausap at nagkaayos na sila.” said Marcial.
The commissioner also warned the two players that heavier penalties will be imposed should a similar incident happen again.
San Miguel defeated Magnolia in Game 2, 109-85, to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven finals series.
Game 3 is scheduled on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
