Bohol policemen are asking that they be allowed anew to apprehend traffic violators as a series of complaints were lodged by the public against motorcycle riders who are drag racing in various points in the city and in some towns.

Provincial PNP Director SSupt. Edgardo Ingking met last Wednesday with Tagbilaran City Land Transportation Office (LTO) chief Joel Maloloy-on to address the motorcycle drag racing problem involving minors here.

The public have expressed alarm on the situation asking for immediate intervention from the police.

LTO chief Reynaldo Berroya recalled the deputation it issued to police officers all over the country after receiving reports that some PNP officials have been extorting from motorists.

During their meeting, Ingking and Maloloy-on agreed that drag racing in the city streets and in some towns should be stopped as it poses danger not only to the motorcycle riders but also to residents.

Residents likewise complained of the noise as motorists often race during nighttime and during the wee hours of the morning.

Ingking voiced the sentiments of policemen here relative to the revocation of their authority to apprehend traffic violators.

Maloloy-on told the Chronicle that he will officially request Berroya to exempt Bohol policemen from the recall of LTO deputation and that local police should be allowed to issue temporary operators permit (TOP) to erring drivers.

Maloloy-on, who was previously assigned at the Jagna-LTO, said he has not heard of any complaints regarding unscrupulous policemen who victimize motorists here unlike in the other provinces and in Metro Manila.

The Tagbilaran LTO chief likewise denied any knowledge of individuals who have managed to secure deputation from the LTO.

According to Ingking, solution to the problem also depends on the parents of the youngsters involved in drag racing.

"Parents should monitor and have direct control of their children with more emphasis if and when [they] can use their motorcycles," Ingking said.

Enforcement of the traffic code is now the sole responsibility of the LTO which lacks field personnel to apprehend traffic violators.
