Bohol Media Group Condemns City Hall Harassment
« on: March 17, 2009, 11:11:17 PM »
Published by the Bohol Chronicle

Bohol media has strongly condemned the recent harassments and threats to its members and the "senseless, shameless assault to press freedom."

In an approved en masse board resolution, the Bohol Tri-Media Association (BTMA) outpoured its dismay over the on-going affronts towards its members---and the very freedom of the press which is enshrined in the Constitution---after a series of recent harassments.

The group cited these recent assaults to press freedom victimizing, first, radio blocktimer Roberto "Batchoy" Alba, then radio reporter Roger Balamad and, most recently, radio blocktimer Nestor Daarol.

The BTMA loudly denounced the harassments and threats, saying they have only shown a bankruptcy in understanding the indispensable role and supreme responsibility of the media.

It said it is the profession of the media to act as a watchdog of good governance and public interest and to report on often controversial issues affecting the community it serves.

Bullying and threatening individual mediamen as retaliation for unfavorable reporting do not only put at risk the target journalists and their families, according to the BTMA.

Print journalist Ven Arigo was physically harmed and threatened over a year ago before the series of recent attacks and harassments involving victims Alba, Balamad and Daarol.

The biggest press organization in this part of the country said attacking and threatening the media people is also clearly detrimental to the need of the greater public for vital informations to be published or aired.

The BMTA assailed the harassment to the members of the media in the performance of their work as an evident suppression of the people's right to know.

The officers of the association vowed to stand in rock solidarity with their colleagues who, for their courageous work, have become victims of aggression.

Those who signed to conform to the board resolution are president Lito Responte, vice president for radio Peter Dejaresco, treasurer Jerry Pabe, secretary Ven Arigo, auditor Batchoy Alba, and board directors Kit Bagaipo, Tibbs Bullecer, Jr., Atoy Cosap, Nestor Daarol, Bob Galero, Arnold Lucas, BJ Torralba and Chito Visarra.

As the Fourth Estate, the media or press has to act as guardian of public interest to sustain the uncompromising crusade for truth in a modern democracy, the group said.

The BTMA said any attempt to silence the press is death to the people's democratic right to express.

This years BTMA members are comprized of 99% RD/Chronicle.

Lito Responte of DYTR/911 Radio is President
Vice President is Peter Dejerasco
Vice President "Print" Loy Polapos
Ben Areigo was appointed in a none voting position from dyrd/congressman chatto staff as the secretary for the group.
Treasurer is Gerry Pabe

Among other board memebers. Election this year were pretty much finished when the van bringing over none dytr and non rd/chronicle media people to the christmas party in Dauis at Bohol plaza resort.

I would love to serve on the board but not a chance when they have for two consequitive years never waited for the vans with other media arriving before the nominations are to late to be handed in its pretty useless.

I can always predict the board members and the awarding results to be the same from year to year.

To me it is sort of like a broken cd and a waste of time to be present at such events.

I am use to being on committees who are good about handling things in a nice way.

Whats the use of paying for membership when there are no words or minutes being passed out on what the meeting topics were.

What kind of a club is rhis a VIP?

Dear Priscilla,
Let us stick to the topic and see the substance of this postings.  I respect journalism as something offering the people a singular chance to grasp what is happening in our times, in our growing city.
I envy you because of your presence in this area. You have a greater chance to work on this.
What do you think could be the best solution to ease the situation?

greetings from Germany,
Tess

Lest i sound like a sour grape i may be accused for saying this, the BTMA stand is one that was forced out, my sources said.

BTMA, upon the instigation of somebody high did come out with an official stand when one of this man's men got a splashing.

It did not however came out with any statment when a media member here in Bohol got a slapping.

But because somebody else want it that way, the condemnation came out.

I still would like to insist.

What is the dividing line between a media man and a private person?

Making personal comments under the media blanket, would it practically clothe the man in immunity from personal attacks like he had it coming?

Ngutana ra tawn pod ko.

It was recently blottered just one week after the BTMA had put out a write up regarding harrassment asmentioned above the next media man who has fallen victim to threats from the city law/government according to the last blog was by a task member who said he was looking for Nestor Darral and had told the two media members from DYRD that the are to deliver a message of threat from him if they see him again.

Peter Dejerasco would like for all media outlets to place the news in print this coming Sunday before his men start to discuss the issue over the airwaves. Unnfortunantly i have a copy of what was blotttered but the writing is really hard to understand.

I hope by later today I can have a clearer translation of what is being said exactly.
