from Leo Udtohan

Excuse me; I don't have intention to spoil your appetite watching the bout of Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and Daniel Ponce de Leon of Mexico. While, fighting for glory and honor, Boom Boom is no excuse of a controversy (the same news we heard on a local radio) he's facing now.

Could it be true that boxing idol Rey “Boom Bom” Bautista will face a million tax evasion charges to be filed by the Bureau of Internal Revenue with the Court of Tax Appeals?

According to True Very Reliable Source (VRS) the “hot” item came into public when BIR men are “discussing” tax payers.

The same VRS said that the BIR has collected evidences to be presented and is sufficient to prove that the Boom Boom has violated several provisions of the National Internal Revenue Code.

A source from the BIR said that Bautista is required to file a declaration of his estimated income for each taxable year.  As an individual earning income within the Philippines, and irrespective of his citizenship, Bautista must file a tax return, a BIR official said.

Baustita will be charged by BIR for failure to pay the proper taxes. Boom Boom must have misdeclared his income for the past years and the BIR intends to collect what the boxer failed to pay.

The BIR has been going after high-profile tax evaders the past years, including movie celebrities like Judy Ann Santos, Regine Velasquez and Richard Gomez.

Blame Boom Boom's hired CPA who tricked him into believing that "tax avoidance is an art" when this booboo of an accountant only led him to a crime of tax evasion. Mr. Bautista should sue his CPA for malpractice and claim his tax due to the gov't as damages. This will teach  some of our professionals (including CPAs) to honor their code of ethics!

Korek ka dyan not only celebrities how about yong mga businessman mostly mga tax evaders. Siguro na-isip ni Boom boom nga sayang lang ang pera nya kung mo bayad sya wala rin mapuntahan.

It's the boxer's handlers, if you ask me. Boom Boom was only a little above 18 when he entered professional boxing. Neither he nor his parents know nothing about sportsmen's obligations to file income tax returns.

I don't think a case for tax avoidance will be filed by BIR right away. It will start with BIR asking Boom Boom to voluntarily pay the tax assessment first.

Exactly.  What would Boom-Boom know about filing his income tax returns?

Poor BIR. It can only collect good taxes from small tax payers. Naay daghang dagkong negosyanting angay cobrahan ug buhis. Matod pa sa IMF, for every peso tax due, 40 centavos is kept by the tax evaders only 60 centavos goes to the BIR. I don't think Boom-Boom is one of the evaders. He has only started to make money. The BIR should spend more time and resources in chasing the big busiensses who are certainly the tax evaders, some are rice smugglers, labor exploiters (who pay their workers 120 or less when the minimum is 200+), who keep two sets of books (one for the BIR and one for their personal use). These businessmen have advanced, modern and sophisticated offices and high tech business environment. From my personal observations, the big establishments are actually engaging also in 5/6 financing. They provide capital to middlemen who capture rice harvest of farmers. They extend credit to customers by charging 10% to the goods which is shared by the owner (5%) and agent (5%), which interest charge is on top of hefty profits buried in the goods they sell on credit.

These are proof of a prosperous business activities which a corrupt, ignorant and stupid BIR man can hardly appreciate.

The overseas pinoys serve only as indirect perpetrators of tax evasion and labor exploitation by patronizing the big business establishment. They are the ones who give life to all business establishments - the good or bad ones.
