Sucking Sand to be Dumped Back Along Alona
« on: January 07, 2009, 05:04:37 PM »
The governor was quite candid about it.

To solve the diminishing sand along the beachfront of Alona in Tawala, he proposed to borrow a dredger from Marra Construction to do the job.

To him, it is that simple. Tow the barge, dip its suction pumps down there where he said would all be sand because it has been simply washed out from the shorelines.

He said a well-known diver, a gud named Holger is providing him the underwater fotos where the suction pumps would suck sand.

And all to extend the beachline so that the occupant establishment encroaching the 20 meter public access zones can edge a bit and now be outside the banned public areas.

Along Alona stretch? where snorkelers get a satisfying peep at the coral cover near the beaches, they would be tampering with nature? Oh my!

why cant they kick out them assholes sitting on the beachfronts to clear the public access zones according to law?

Because they cant do it, "theyre getting the pier to come to the boat?"

And claiming it is for the environment? How ingenious.

What can you say?

Altered nature is not nature. Its quality and value diminished.

The sand from ocean floor is coarse grain. It can not replace the powdery fine sand on the shoreline as it takes years to accumulate such by action of wave and weather.

If this happens, tourists will experience coarse sand and not the powdery sand that they came for. All they will get is frustration and by next tourist season, they will look for another destination.

Kining si Holger nga German scuba diver, kining iyang bitiis gipaak sa pating sa Australia,  pato-o to-o.He has no qualifications, not even a college graduate per German standards You can not tamper with soil erosion. The ocean and seashore is changing. You can ask Guindulmanons how the beach in Sawang is changed.
Wait for awhile and you will see more dramatic changes  not far in the fuure.

Naunsa diay Manay ang beach sa sawang. Sa una nakakita ko adto. Hugaw man kay naa ra sa kilid ang merkado ug ang tanan nga garbage ug waste water adto tanan sa dagat.

It is in this light that i am calling any Boholano environmentalist, not the one that admits hes an extremist (kay kini sila di moaon og baki, tilapi, utan nangka, bago ug kamunngay kay anti-environment kuno) to shed light on this.

Bisan personal opinion that we can present before the barges would start the job they would be told to do.

Poor Alona, raped.

You can not control the run of nature, because of the melting of ice in the polar areas, the sea is getting higher. There are internal upheavals below the sea, that´s why tsunami is common. There are also freak waves that are beyond the brain of the scientists when it happens.
This I learned from my daughter who is studying this profession, I will research more and share with you.
Maosik ang kwarta nga gastohon, ipa-presenta and feasibility study before anything gets started, try to move the locals.

dredging sand from the ocean floor in order to spruce up some shoreline with more sand is nothing new. back in the early 80s, the coastline of dio island in tacloban city which is owned by one of imelda marcos' brothers was filled in with more sand that ws dredged from somewhere. in the late 80s, i visited white island in camiguin where my guide informed me that the boat which was anchored in the distance was dredging sand from the ocean floor. during the early part of the new millenium, there was noise in the media regarding some sand bars belonging to talibon and getafe areas that were "sinking" due to unauthorized and unregulated dredging of the sand supposedly to beautify and provide sand to the otherwise rocky shorelines of mactan island especially those fronting 5-star resorts. thus, doing the same thing for alona beach is quite possible. however, it can only work if they lay the sand beyond the reach of the water at high tide. but if they intend to extend the beach area towards the water, then they are going to need a very large volume of sand to accomplish that. it would be similar to reclamation and i seriously doubt if the provincial government has the financial resources to do that.

apothecary: i am quite intrigued by these people whom you describe as extremist environmentalists. are they in bohol? from the sound of it, i would imagine that they should be the kind of people who would not ride any type of vehicle that is powered by fossil fuel, and do not wear clothing that are made from either petrochemical sources such as nylon, polyester and the like, or animal hide which leaves them nothing else to wear except organic cotton (which is not found anywhere near bohol or the philippines for that matter) or raffia (saguran). nonetheless, i would appreciate if you can provide information on the matter. thanx.

This uncetainty makes me very unhappy. The money comes from taxes. And taxes are paid bravely by the lowly common tao. Big business have their own tricks to evade taxes so with some prominent actors and personalities. This project is not 100%, and it might succumed to a white elephant projects.  Masayang ang kwrta, daghang gipang gotom.  Unya matingala ang gobyerno nganong nisaka ang insurgency!

I would like to disagree with them of doing that...that was so stupid idea...then what will happen to the species that habitate in that ocean floor?

That was so stupid and selfish!

Leave the nature alone!!

i understand your concern, mdb. but because it's been done before, there's a big likelihood that provincial authorities will proceed to do it if they have the resources it takes to undertake the project. unless someone is able to hammer down some good logic and rationality into their thick heads.

Dredge the thread! Cool, Calle baby ;D

Bitaw, Alona beach needs to be saved. Adding sand on the beach may be one solution but it should be coupled with the removal of man-made structures that hastens sand erosion and enforcement of the set back from the beachfront.

Also, the government should realize (I'm sure they do) that there will be some sort of adverse impacts from pumping the sand from the ocean's bottom. The area where to pump the sand from should be carefully selected and mitigating measures should be in place.

I don't think it's proper that the government should shoulder all the expense for the project. The beach resort owners should pay the bulk of the expense because they will be directly benefited from it when the beach will be beautified.

Cool! Now let me build my sand castle in the air  ;D

I will relate to you an experience;
There was a barrio assembly meeting in Barrio Booy, a couple of years ago. I attended out of curiousity and also as an expatriate of Booy.  The discussions was the sand barges, collectors of sands to be sold for building and construction purposes The people of Booy are very irritated with this business in this area. I put up a question, asking of course their permission, as who profits most of this activity?  Who gets the taxes? Are the people aware of the environmental consequences, menos na ug amahong, lato ug mga isda.
I was astound that some youth aired their gripes, I did not know that there are no amahong and other seashells which a food supplement for the barrio people and the taxes gets the city and not the  barrio. The issue was to stop this sand bancas, and revoke the business permits thru barrio resolutions.

murag sa cebu nay manmade nga mga sand baligja.

bnc, asa gani na? murag sa carmen man siguro na. palit na lang mga taga alona adto.

the dredging, i think, is for the benefit of the beach owners. the government should not shoulder the expenses.

55,000 to 65,000 cubic meters of sand from the depths of Alona be sucked and restored to the beachfronts. All to extend the beachfronts by 20 meters.

because the officials who should be implementing the 20-meter access zones can not bulldoze the illegfal structures because these are owned by moneyed people.

So they are willing to compromise the environment.

That is how i simply see it.

Obviously, Alona would be the Pandoras Box of sorts.

They would also have to do something with that structure built by some wealthy guys in Baclayon along Laya, the Bohol Tropics, Miravilla, Jjs Seafoods, Ramiro Hospital perhaps?

if the intention of adding sand along the shore line of alona beach is to extend the beach front towards the water, then the whole initiative is going to be counter productive.

while it is technically possible to extend the beach front in such manner, the corals that abound right in front of the shore line are going to be covered in the process.

in other words, this development initiative, if pursued in the above manner, only destroys the structures that provide habitat to marine life in the area.

and without the diverse marine life that the corals support, what else is there to see under the water???

and if there is nothing interesting to see under the water, what is the point of going to alona beach at all???

ergo, dumping more sand to extend beachfront toward the water can actually diminish the number of tourists that will go to that area in the long term.

No. Many Boholanos find it more interesting gawking at foreign tourists on the sand without their tops on.

It's a pity that many Boholanos do not have the opportunity (or the interest) to see the beauty of our underwater treasurers.

Gawking has been elevated as a delicate form of art.
You have to look without getting caught watching
Act oblivious without being out of place
Enjoy the view without attracting attention to your bulging self

Funny what the sun, sand and the salty air can do to mortals like us  ;D

Sucking the view - Glacier's and Gec's thing

So to all suckers out there, let government suck ;D

Sucking the sand - Government's thing
Sucking the view - Glacier's and Gec's thing

So to all suckers out there, let government suck ;D

Amazing how a catchy word used in the title of this thread could change the meaning and perspective of things. :)

our sucking the view won't suck the job they do
their sucking the sand may suck our view away

it's unfortunate. it's unfair. ihilak na lang nako.  :'( :'( ;D

No. Many Boholanos find it more interesting gawking at foreign tourists on the sand without their tops on.

It's a pity that many Boholanos do not have the opportunity (or the interest) to see the beauty of our underwater treasurers.

And when the beautiful Filipina is abroad in Europe or in North America, I can guarantee to you that foreign men will gawk at her beauty.

Human nature. One cannot help what nature has mandated.

GEC  eloquently explains this. As always.

nganong gitugutan man sa mga taga Talibon ang kuhaan sila og BALAS, angay unta og wala sila nisugot kay bahandi gud na nila unya ipanghatag nalang diay.

Hmm, again we would like to reiterate here, nobody would ever allow it to happen. But it would be too bad if, for convenience sake, wed again blame the government, who, we know has been riddled with inefficiency despite its apparent attempt to plug its holes.

In the case of Talibon, or Getafe, or Inabanga, Buenavista, or Clarin (all have complained about losing islets or sandbars in teh last decades, it should be known that the poachers really play catch and mouse here. The islets off Bohol's northern side again prove to be a convenient hideaway to poachers who illegally haul sand, in PUMPBOATS, to sell them to Mactan beach resorts.

Look at what happened to Macalingao Islet (sandbar) in Clarin, now under  three feet of water.

In early 1990's, i witnessed two barge-ful load of sand from Anda which were supposedly hauled for Cebu beaches again. It was caught and has to be impounded.

We are still struggling to abate all these blatant attempts. In the age of cellular connection, we deem it easy, convenient and practical if people who see any of these attempts to just text or call their authorities? Barangay Captains are now a text away, and they all have the most direct responsibility to stop all these, them being the guardians of the resources at their immediate disposal.

I would rather suggest that people keep their barangay captain's mobile number and one from the Camp dagohoy Police hotline. Its 09209106240.

Your help is all we need.

taking sand from bohol to "refurbish" rocky beaches in mactan was and still is illegal. this would probably also respond to glacier's query why people in talibon and other northern bohol towns did not complain about it. as a matter of fact, they did, and it led to an investigation that found the missing bohol sand sitting prettily along the nice powdery white beaches of mactan especially those areas fronting five-star resort hotels... obviously, the sand was sucked from underneath (read: stolen) when no one was looking. i suppose people are more vigilant now and incidents like this should happen less often especially if these coastal towns maintain an active and functional bantay dagat unit.
