Farmers and Traders in Talibon Want Bridge Repaired
« on: November 28, 2007, 12:03:05 AM »
Bohol Sunday Post

Traders and farmers here have grown desperate on the inaction of concerned agencies on the request to repair the Baily Bridge connecting barangay San Agustin and the upland barangays of Zamora, Sikatuna and Magsaysay, that collapsed a year ago.

Barangay residents had built a temporary bridge, but the heavy downpour brought about by Typhoon Lando destroyed it. Actually, it was the second temporary bridge built in lieu of the repair of the original one.

Local officials had already reported this to the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council and the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council.

It was the second temporary bridge built while waiting for an action from concerned agencies on the barangay's request filed a year ago, for repair of the original San Agustin-Zamora Baily Bridge.

The bridge fall down when a ten-wheeler truck loaded with cement tried to cross, which even resulted to the death of the truck's driver.

Since then, traders and farmers had raised concern on the difficulty on their part to transport their goods- -farmers from their farms to the market in Poblacion area and small-time traders from Poblacion area to San Agustin and the neighboring barangays.

Traders, farmers and other residents of this town risk their lives when they cross the river.

Acting on the problem, barangay officials led by Barangay Captain Silvestre Polestico, held a special session to pass a resolution calling for immediate assistance from concerned agencies.

While waiting, a temporary bridge made of wood and bamboo was built, but the October 9 flood washed it out.

Again, the residents constructed another temporary bridge from the P30,000 allocation released by Mayor Juanario Item, P20,000 from the barangay funds of Zamora and 50 bags of cement donated by residents.

The temporary bridge could only accommodate motorcycles, bicycles and people, being made of the salvaged wooden parts of the Bailey bridge. Again, the temporary bridge had succumbed to the wrath of Typhoon Lando.

This is a serious plea from the group of people whom their means of livelihood is much affected. I just hope that the Officials concerned will entertain earlier such problem for it will  affects to the farmers economic unavoided disaster.

I just remember before... those Engineers who are in-charge of building and repairing bridges in the whole Bohol province in which those budget subjected to such projects..hmmmmmmm they have all cemented bungalows and the bridges?? ???
