By Ric V Obedencio

TALIBON, Bohol – A doctor of medicine practitioner, Dr. Miguel Mancao, has expressed willingness to pitch help to a 12-year old child suffering from what the medical community called “hydrocephalus.”

Dr. Mancao, member of the U. S.-based Association of Philippine Physicians of Florida Panhandle (APPFP), is one of the prime movers of the four-day surgical-medical-dental mission on January 27-30, 2014 launched at Garcia Memorial Provincial Hospital of this town. The mission is aided by the provincial government with the nod of Gov. Edgar Chatto providing the venue facilitated by hospital chief Dr. Harold Gallego of this town.

Hydrocephalus is also known as “water on the brain, according to the Wikipedia. “It is a medical condition in which there is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles, or cavities, of the brain. This may cause increased intracranial pressure inside the skull and progressive enlargement of the head, convulsion, tunnel vision, and mental disability. Hydrocephalus can also cause death. Although it does occur in older adults, it is more common in infants.”

Dr. Mancao said in an exclusive interview by this writer that the Jenilyn Amora, 12, who is suffering with a “watery brain” can be treated in the U. S. if there are people willing to shoulder the expenses, such as air fares. He added that he can be of help facilitate to make the surgical procedures of Jenilyn’s ailment free once she is in the U. S. He estimated that it cost $6,000 plus to bring her to the U. S.

In a separate exclusive interview, Jenilyn’s mother, Emily Amora said that it appears they’re hopeless since Jenilyn may never treated with surgical procedures when they’re told by the doctors in Tagbilaran city because of her age.

Jenilyn is lying on scrap boxes used as mat on a concrete sidewalk near the main door of Alturas mart of this town. Some kind-hearted people passing her drop coins on a container placed near where she’s lying on while her mother and her brother, Jumel Amora, 15, are making money from the other scrap boxes for rent used to cover parked motorcycles nearby. Emily said it is the only way they can earn and they can earn as much as PhP200/day but not always.

She said she has to bring Jenilyn along with them here everyday since no one would take care of her at home in Barangay Lomangog, Ubay town, where they’re now residing.

Jennilyn cannot speak a single word since she was born, Emily said. Worse is that she cannot eat by herself and she has to be fed, she said. Her physical body is getting frail and in poor health. Her head as it grows is getting heavy that she looks burdened whenever she tries to lift it up or to lean on both sides while lying on a concrete floor.

Emily said Jenilyn seriously needs help because she wanted her to live in a normal life. (RVO)
