BOHOLANO sensation Czar Amonsot left the country for the US with lot of hopes to put his tainted career back on track and to bring glory to the country.
On July 21, the WBO Asia Pacific Lightweight champion will fight the undefeated Australian WBO interim lightweight titlist Michael Katsidis under the Bernard Hopkins vs. Wingky Wright super middleweight bout in Las Vegas. “The way Czar trained, we believe he has a good chance of winning. All of his problems before are no longer there. He is now very focused on his career because he knows it’s for him and for his family. His conditioning is very good,†said ALA Boys mentor Antonio Aldeguer.
The 22-year-old Boholano suffered a humiliating first round knockout defeat to Indonesian Simson Butar-Butar in September last year at his hometown in Tagbilaran City. That defeat earned him a lot of criticism of his work habit and he was barred from wearing the fabled black ALA Gym shorts—a symbol of dignity, discipline and determination.
However, Amonsot’s humility after learning his mistakes earned him a second chance and he proved it when he won the vacant WBO Asia Pacific 135-pound belt in Korea last February.
“He has proven that he has changed. He promised not to do it again and as a proof he is being escorted by his brother here at the gym. He is now more determined than ever and with this chance he gets, this is a good ground for him to rise from his mistakes,†added Aldeguer.
Amonsot and ALA Gym chief trainer Edito Villamor left yesterday for Las Vegas where former Cebu-based English boxing trainer Tony Martin is waiting to assist them in training.
