Best Example of this negligence is the quarry in Garcia Hernandez.
For everyone's information, our limestone is the highest grade around 80-90% purity and is the best material for making top of the line ceramics in Japan.
However, the deal between Philippine Cinter & Japan is 100 years. It happened since I was grade six back then (1979).
Na upaw na lang ang bukid sa Garcia Hernandez. Hapit na ma upos, apan wala koy nakita nga kauswagan sa lugar. At least naay high rise building or shopping complex, to the least a decent public market. Asa man diay ang kwarta ani nga na ipon for more than 30 years of rent/taxes?
Back then, the deal was in a closed door. There were no public consultations, no ecological assesment, no study conducted. We do not know the extent of damage to our ecology and biodiversity from start of that mine up to present. There were dynamite blastings that may disturb the natural habitat of rare species and clear cutting of indigenous forest.
As per my uncle who is a farmer in Bilar, he noticed something that disturbed me. He said that since the quary began in Garcia Hernandez, the water supply at Raja Sikatuna Park and Lugarita was reduced. Also some wells were dried up. Those wells were dug by my grandfather and known to have water even during drought. Note that Raja Sikatuna is just behind the Quarry site of Garcia Hernandez.
All I can say is we are all loosers due to our negligence.
