SPONGE COLA…Live in Bohol
« on: July 01, 2007, 09:47:06 AM »
By Ariel E. Fullido

The country’s hottest rock band of this generation, Sponge Cola, will heat up the stage in a free concert at the wide and spacious Island City Mall carpark on July 21, Saturday, at 8 PM.

It’s one spectacular Sandugo rock party as Island City Mall, in cooperation with Globe Telecom, presents Sponge Cola in their first-ever concert in Bohol. The band is behind the smash hits like “Bitiw,” “Crazy For You,” “Nakapagtataka,” “Jeepney,” and many more.

Sponge Cola was officially born in the summer of 2002, and came up with a self-titled album a year after, containing five original songs: Lunes, A Tear, Saturn, Cigarette and Jeepney. The songs got extensive airplay from several local pop and rock radio stations, which helped broaden their fan base across the nation. A bootlegged copy of their version of Madonna's "Crazy for You" even became a big underground hit, that some listeners believed it was a Sponge Cola original. Though this misconception has been instrumental in increasing Sponge Cola's popularity, the band has since aimed to transcend the stigma of being a cover band, and pushed their original songs to the forefront, and public response to the band became better than ever; the magic had already begun.

In 2004, Sony Music Philippines managed to sign the boys for the release of their full-length debut album, “Palabas,” which features a definitive voice in unadulterated rock, reminiscent of 90s alternative but mixed with enough sing-along pop sensibility-as based on the band members' individual influences. The songs “Lunes” and “KLSP” gained popularity and ended up in most radio stations' charts. Also, “Jeepney” became popular along with their own version of “Crazy For You.” With the uprising of Filipino Rock in the middle of 2005, Sponge Cola gained even more popularity from listeners with their song “Gemini” and especially the emo-alternative rock song “Una.” All their singles were able to reach the no. 1 spot in both Philippines 100 and MYX Hit Chart.

Sponge Cola releases their second album, “Transit,” last year which turned gold after less than three months of its release. “Bitiw” the carrier single of the album, even broaden the band's popularity, and the second single, “Tuliro,” is even climbing the chart to this day.
The band has also contributed on two tribute albums. They covered the 90's hit song by the Eraserheads, “Pare Ko”, on Ultraelectromagneticjam and the classic “Nakapagtataka” on the APO Hiking Society tribute, "Kami nAPO Muna". The band also won numerous prestigious awards like the NU 107 Rock Awards: 2005 Male Rock Icon of The Year - Yael Yuzon; ASAP Pop Viewer's Choice for 2006; Pop Band of The Year; MYX Music Awards: 2006 Favorite Rock Video - "KLSP;" 2007 Favorite Song - "Bitiw;" 2007 Favorite Rock Video - "Bitiw;" 2007 Favorite Artist - Sponge Cola; and 2007 Favorite Group - Sponge Cola

Now the band came up with a theme song of the new season of the show “Pedro Penduko at ang mga Engkantao” entitled “Tuloy Pa Rin.” Sponge Cola is composed of Yael Yuzon (rhythm guitar, lead vocals), g*** Dilay (bass guitar, backup vocals), Erwin Armovit (lead guitar), and Chris Cantada (drums, backup vocals) -- all from the Ateneo de Manila University. Lead singer Yael is the first cousin of actress and StarStruck Batch 1 third placer Nadine Samonte, and was voted as one of RP’s Sexiest Men.

The band was first named "Sponge" after the book, “Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour,” but when the band found out that a Detroit grunge band had already claimed the name “Sponge,” they add “Cola,” since they though it an easy word to remember.

Since their conception in 2002, Sponge Cola has played in big concert evenst like this year's MTV Pilipinas Awards Night, establishing them as one of the hottest bands of this generation. They have not only garnered the adulation of fans but also the respect and recognition of critics and contemporaries. Already hailed by the press as "The Next Big Thing,” Sponge Cola is something to keep an eye on-and an ear out for-in the years to come.

SPONGE COLA will perform live in a free concert at the Island City Mall carpark on July 21, Saturday.
