A group of 10 men, in shorts and slippers, were so excited about the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton boxing match that they literally climbed a tree for a better view.
Others stood on a “kariton,†or wooden cart, while a few clambered up the steel gates of the Pasig City Hall, risking life and limb, to watch the LCD screen showing satellite feed of the match under the humid May sun.
Officials mounted two monitors in tents in front of the Pasig City Sports Center for the people who could not get into the 5,000-seater stadium, which was filled to capacity.
Queues to the free showing, sponsored by the city government, reached several blocks away from City Hall as early as 7 a.m., an hour before the gates opened.
Those who could not enter had to settle for the LCD screens outside. But they weren't complaining.
Ten men climbed a tree beside the tents to get a better view of the match. A police officer warned them: “Hey, be careful up there. You will get pierced if you fall. Those railings are sharp.â€
But the warnings were not heeded.
