Tshomlee Go went through the proverbial eye of the needle to take his place in the 2008 Beijing Games and make up for teammate Mary Antoinette Rivero's heart-breaking quarterfinal loss Saturday in the World Olympic Qualifying at the Manchester Evening News Arena here.
The 26-year-old Go scored four straight victories, including one against a Thai World Cup and Asian champion, to reach the male -58kg semifinals where he lost to eventual champion, reigning Olympic titlist Mu Yen Chu of Chinese Taipei.
But there was no denying the Athens Olympics veteran for making yet another run for the Games, beating a gutsy Egyptian in the battle for the bronze medal in a thrilling sudden-death..
Go finished the three rounds in a -1 deadlock with Tamer Salah Bayoumi after incurring deductions for failing to get into action. But the extra two minutes passed by without anybody making that first point which would have sealed the win.
That left the four corner referees to decide who takes the win, and unanimously handed the victory to the more aggressive Filipino jin.
