LOS ANGELES (TICKER) —Legendary boxing ring announcer Michael Buffer is recovering at his home Thursday after undergoing successful surgery to remove cancerous tumors in his throat and neck.
Buffer, who is famous for trademarking the phrase ‘Let’s get ready to rumble,’ said that the cancer was detected at an early stage in mid-February and feels much better three weeks after the operation.
“I am recovering well and feel stronger every day,†Buffer said in a statement. “The early detection prevented any spread that would have jeopardized my vocal ability. I am looking forward to being back in the ring next week as Bernard Hopkins faces Joe Calzaghe on HBO from Las Vegas (on April 19).
“The support and encouragement for a return to good health received from my friends and members of the sports promotion and broadcasting community was overwhelming and greatly appreciated.â€
Buffer has been recognized around the world as boxing’s premiere ring announcer for more than 25 years.
