Manny Pacquiao Will Retire in 2009 and Return to Politics?
« on: August 31, 2008, 12:22:39 AM »
World Boxing Council lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao plans to retire in 2009.

After his fight against Mexican-American Oscar de la Hoya on December 6, Pacquiao said he plans to have just two more fights before hanging his gloves in 2009.

Pacquiao could earn a whopping $15 million from his mega-fight with de la Hoya, analysts said.

Pacquiao told ABS-CBN News that his mother Dionisia and his relatives have long wished his retirement, and he thinks it is time to heed their advice.

"Definitely, late this year, gusto na kong pagretirin ng magulang ko. At tama, dahil mahirap ang trabaho ko, so naintindihan ko naman sila," said Pacquiao.

But the Filipino boxing hero, however, said he will have two more fights after his match with De la Hoya.

When asked if he will again try politics after retirement, Pacquiao refused to comment.

Speculations are rife about Pacquiao’s political ambitions as some quarters said his plan to run as congressman of Sarangani is the main reason why he is contemplating about retirement.

The next elections are scheduled in May 2010.
