Filipino ring stars Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire and Gerry Peñalosa were prominently mentioned in the 2007 Boxing Year in Review of The Boxing Times.
Donaire’s knockout victory over the erstwhile unbeaten Australian Vic Darchinyan for the IBF/IBO flyweight crown was cited as “Upset of the Year.â€
Pacquiao’s eighth-round knockout of Mexican Jorge Solis, on the other hand, got the nod of the The Boxing Times staff as one of the bloodiest title fights.
Trailing on all three judges scorecards throughout, Peñalos unleashed a wicked left hand to the liver that sent bantamweight champion Johnny Gonzales to the canvas with seconds left in the seventh round.
That classic left was tagged as the best body punch.
Earlier, Donaire’s fifth round demolition of Darchinyan also earned him accolades from Ring magazine and boxing TV network HBO as “Knockout of the Year†and “Upset of the Year.â€
