RP booters third in Street Child World Cup
The Philippines landed at third place in the Deloitte Street Child World Cup, beating home team South Africa, 2-1, yesterday in Durban.
According to the tournament's official website, South Africa scored the opening goal but the Philippines managed to tie the score at 1-1 in regulation. The Filipino street kids then clinched the winning goal in the fifth minute of the extra period.
In the finals, India were crowned as the first Street Child World Champions, beating Tanzania via a penalty kick, 1-0.
The Philippines earlier lost against the United Kingdom, 2-4, and Tanzania, 0-2, to forfeit its chances of reaching the finals. They bounced back though with big wins against Brazil, 6-2, and Ukraine, 3-0, before facing South Africa.
Managed by the Henry V. Moran Foundation with Filipino rock icon Ed Formoso as its team manager, the Filipino booters came from football teams from the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Street Childrens Village, Nayon ng Kabataan of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Manila Boys Town Complex, Philippine Christian Foundation, the Gawad Kalinga Foundation, among others.

I congratulate the Deloitte Street Child World Cup project in its commitment to bring attention to the plight of street children through the power of football,†seven-time boxing world champion Manny Pacquiao commented on the tournament.
The Street Child World Cup, a project by the Deloitte foundation, aims to “strengthen, equip and enable a global network of partners to work towards a world where the rights of all children to a full, healthy and dignified life.â€

The Street Child World Cup is a brilliant project which will help hundreds of thousands of teenagers who live on the streets by getting the world to listen to them and give them a fair chance,†Theo Walcott, a popular striker for Arsenal said.
According to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a South African human rights icon, the Street Child World Cup “demonstrates the tremendous potential of... street children, who are so often treated as less than human.â€
