The Philippines managed only a 2-2 draw against Vietnam early Saturday as it mathematically kept its quest to finish within the top 10 of the 40th Istanbul Chess Olympiad.

All four boards were drawn against the Philippines’ nemesis in Southeast Asia as the Filipinos picked up one match point for a total of 14 match points in this 11-round Swiss System event that finishes on Sunday.

Under this scoring system, a team victory is worth two points, a draw one and a loss zero. The Philippine team has six wins, two draws and two losses.

Wesley So drew with Le Quang Liem in 38 movies of a King’s Indian, Nguyen Ngoc Truongson forced a draw by perpetual check on Oliver Barbosa in a 30-move Slav Defense, Eugene Torre and Nguyen Van Huy halved the point in a 54-move Queen’s Gambit and Mark Paragua drew with Nguyen Doc Hoa in 46 moves of a King’s Indian.

The Philippines are tied from ninth to 14th places and will play Romania in the last round set on Sunday afternoon, Manila time.

The Romanians, seeded 25th, are coming off a 3-1 victory over powerhouse France are also bidding to finish in the top 10, which they have not done in a long time.

The Philippine team’s preparation is expected to focus on stopping Romanian second board Mircea-Emilian Parligas, who is unbeaten with a 7.5/9 score and Levente Vajda at fourth board with 6.5/9.
