Rey Boom Boom Bautista Up Close & PersonalReynaldo Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista is a Filipino boxer in the Super bantamweight division.
Bautista spent his early life growing rice with his family in the fields. Craving to live a better a life, he turned to boxing days before he turned 17.
Bautista was discovered by Nemi Monton and fought in many amateur boxing contests in Bohol.
Pro Career
Bautista started his career in Cebu when he beat Rey Compendio in a unanimous six round decision on June 12, 2003. He since won 16 of his next bouts, mostly held in Cebu or his home province of Bohol.
His first big break came in September 10, 2005, when he knocked out Felix Flores in an eighth round bout at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
In The World Awaits undercard, Bautista gained the #1 contendership for the WBO Super Bantamweight title when he won in a unanimous decision against Sergio Manuel Medina. Despite giving Medina a knockdown, he too suffered a knockdown from the Argentinian opponent by being pummeled to the ropes.
On August 11, 2007, Bautista challenged the then-WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce de León of Mexico. The Mexican however proved too strong, knocking down the Philippine challenger twice in the first round forcing the referee to end the bout. This was Bautista's first-ever loss. Bautista later admitted that he had been experiencing fever during the fight.
On April 6, 2008, Rey "Boom-Boom" Bautista knocked out Genaro Camargo of Mexico in the second of a 12-round match at the Invasion: Philippines vs The World boxing event at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City. He knocked down Genaro twice in the first round and sent him down for the third and final time 57 seconds into the second round. Bautista thus retained his World Boxing Organization (WBO) inter-continental super bantamweight title.
On August 30, 2008, Bautista (26 wins, 1 loss with 18 KO's) defeated Mexican Eden "Anestecista" Marquez via technical knockout in the 1:08 mark of the 2nd round of 12-rounder "WBO Night of Champions" in Waterfront Cebu City Hotel to retain his WBO Intercontinental super bantam title.
On November 22, 2008, Bautista (26-2, 19 KOs) was vanquished at the MGM Grand Las Vegas, by Heriberto Ruiz (40-7-2, 23 KOs) in Round 3 with scores, 80-70, 78-72 and 77-73.[6][7] It was later revealed that Bautista had been fighting with a fractured wrist even before he fought Ponce de Leon.
After a number of months away from the ring, Bautista made his return on October 16, 2009. There, he took on Marangin Marbun of Indonesia and won by a stoppage in the 7th round. This bout was also Bautista's debut at featherweight.
