WAS the end of the road for the “Maasin Bomber” Alex Aroy when he died on Monday night after a 10-round rematch with Arnel Tadena in Villaba, Leyte.

After losing the match via unanimous decision, Aroy went to the locker room and complained that he had difficulty urinating and defecating. He also experienced excruciating pain in his abdominal region and later passed out.

“After the fight he went to the locker room to relieve himself but he couldn’t. He said that he felt pain in his stomach. I told him that I’ll bring him to the hospital and then he collapsed,” matchmaker Willie Flores told Sun.Star Cebu.

Because of the pain, he was brought to Villaba District Hospital for treatment around 10:30 p.m.

Since the hospital lacked the facilities to tend to him, he was transferred to Manuel Veloso Memorial Hospital in Palompon, some 47 kms. away.

However, Aroy did not reach the hospital alive.

Flores said the initial finding of the doctor at Villaba Hospital was that the 23-year-old boxer died of cardiorespiratory arrest.

For his part, Rex “Wakee” Salud, the manager of Aroy, promised to help his family.

“It has happened, there is nothing we can do. All we can do now is help the family the best way we can,” said Salud.

Aroy had his professional debut in Jakarta, Indonesia when he fought and won against Donny Suratin of Indonesia in an eight rounder. He then went on to win his next eight fights but his streak was put to a halt by ALA boy Rollen Del Castillo in 2005.

Aroy defended his PBF light flyweight belt against Tadena of Bohol last August 2007, which ended in a draw in the second round after he was hit by an accidental headbutt from Tadena. He kept the PBF title.

He also had a stint in South Africa where he lost to World Boxing Council International minimum weight champion Zukisani Kwayiba, which ended in a controversial victory for the South African after the fight was stopped due to a power outage. The match went to the scorecards and he lost.

Aroy was rated RP No.7 in the light flyweight category and had a professional career record of 12 wins 6 losses and 2 draws with 6 wins by knockout. (EKA With ESL)
