Bohol Media Personalities to Plant Trees

There’s more to this 5th class municipality than just its name reflective to friendliness of the native chieftain Datu Sikatuna who befriended then Gen. Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, if historical accounts were true years back.

Mayor Jose Ellorimo pointed this out during a huddle last week with members of Bohol Tri-media Association (BTMA) at his residence here following the painstaking tree planting undertaken by the media led by its president Mr. Fred Araneta in joining fight deforestation in this part of Bohol.

This was not the first activity that BTMA had taken. It took the cudgels in joining the government’s reforestation program of President Noynoy Aquino and planted hundreds of seedlings of various species ably provided by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) led by officer-in-charge provincial environment and natural resources officer Nestor Canda.

Canda told the media that Cambuac Sur, where the tree planting took place, was once a denuded and favorite haven for “slash-and-burn” kind of farming more than 10 years back. But now, the area is starting to progress with forests, not just trees of various species, including Hagbuyo, abound, he added.

He expressing gratitude to the media for the effort, saying the activity is for real because the media did not take this for granted unlike the previous one. Secondly, those seedlings sowed will be well taken care of by his forest rangers from being endangered.

Mayor Ellorimo said he laid down various programs for tourism development and those that are potential for the attraction.

He said that the town’s Tree Park of lush greenery and nature started to pick up along with Inland Fishery Park following the holding of the Provincial Government Family Day last week. The Park is ideal for camping, dry picnic and wholesome family bonding.

The mayor said that he will further push for the development of natural caves the town endowed with for spelunking enthusiasts. One of these caverns is said to be a sure attraction because of its accessibility, where one can pass through underground literally from entrance and exit in the other side of the mountain, said a farmer in an interview. It would be a wonderful experience for tourists, he added.

Canda also bared that, his office is developing a plan for a viewing deck and, if plans don’t go haywire, a canopy walk within the jurisdiction of the Tree Park. The mayor welcomed and elated over the plan.

Another attraction of the town is the booming furniture industry and housing potential because of its still untapped real properties around and proximity here to the city, said the mayor. The town is famous for furniture made of hard wood. He told the media that a lot of his friends and officials are inquiring if there are still lots available for them to settle down here for good.

This town could be one of the many potential tourism circuits, said an observer in an interview. Asked why, he said that from Tagbilaran City a tourist or group of visitors could pass through Corella town before here and see for themselves the stunning wonder of the smallest primate in the world at their natural habitat.
