Kübler-Ross described 5 stages of dying. The first stage, denial, occurs when a person is in denial about the severity of his or her disease or that s/he is dying. This stage gives way to the second stage, anger. During the second stage, the person begins to acknowledge that s/he is going to die and becomes angry, resentful, and even bitter. The patient may become angry with those who are not sick and resent the fact that others are going to live and they are going to die. In the third stage, bargaining, the person is no longer angry, but will often try to make bargains with God or others that s/he will be a better person and do good things if only given a little more time to live. In the fourth stage, depression, the patient comes to the full realization that s/he is going to die and there is nothing that can be done about it. The patient may, at this point, begin to give in to death and begin the process of mourning. The final stage is acceptance. During this stage, a person begins to develop a sense of peace. Often the person wants to be left alone and no longer desires for others to take care of them. This stage is usually reached in the person's final days of life.
