Paranoid personality disorder
« on: November 02, 2012, 08:31:00 PM »
Paranoid personality disorder is a mental disorder characterized by paranoia and a pervasive, long-standing suspiciousness and generalized mistrust of others. Individuals with this personality disorder may be hypersensitive, easily feel slighted, and habitually relate to the world by vigilant scanning of the environment for clues or suggestions that may validate their fears or biases. Paranoid individuals are eager observers. They think they are in danger and look for signs and threats of that danger, potentially not appreciating other evidence.

They tend to be guarded and suspicious and have quite constricted emotional lives. Their reduced capacity for meaningful emotional involvement and the general pattern of isolated withdrawal often lend a quality of schizoid isolation to their life experience. People with this particular disorder may or may not have a tendency to bear grudges, suspiciousness, tendency to interpret others' actions as hostile, persistent tendency to self-reference, or a tenacious sense of personal right.

PDD is characterized by at least three of the following:

    excessive sensitivity to setbacks and rebuffs;

    tendency to bear grudges persistently, i.e. refusal to forgive insults and injuries or slights;

    suspiciousness and a pervasive tendency to distort experience by misconstruing the neutral or friendly actions of others as hostile or contemptuous;

    a combative and tenacious sense of personal rights out of keeping with the actual situation;

    recurrent suspicions, without justification, regarding sexual fidelity of spouse or sexual partner;

    tendency to experience excessive self-importance, manifest in a persistent self-referential attitude;

    preoccupation with unsubstantiated "conspiratorial" explanations of events both immediate to the patient and in the world at large. --Wiki

Causes of Paranoid Personality Disorder

Researchers today don't know what causes paranoid personality disorder. There are many theories, however, about the possible causes of paranoid personality disorder. Most professionals subscribe to a biopsychosocial model of causation -- that is, the causes of are likely due to biological and genetic factors, social factors (such as how a person interacts in their early development with their family and friends and other children), and psychological factors (the individual's personality and temperament, shaped by their environment and learned coping skills to deal with stress). This suggests that no single factor is responsible -- rather, it is the complex and likely intertwined nature of all three factors that are important. If a person has this personality disorder, research suggests that there is a slightly increased risk for this disorder to be "passed down" to their children. -- http://psychcentral.com/
