PRACTICALLY invisible from the earth, a new moon – that’s also a supermoon – rose on New Year’s Day, spurring the interest of astronomers and astrologers alike.

Supermoon. Scientists said a perigee new moon
arose on New Year’s Day, the first of five that will occur in 2014. Astrologers said the phenomenon portends good tidings for the new year.

The phenomenon interests astronomers because it is a supermoon – a full moon or new moon at its closest to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, according to Mario Raymundo of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

If it is a full moon, the apparent size of the lunar disk will be larger than usual, but the moon was in a new phase on Wednesday so it was barely visible to the naked eye.

Supermoons occur about once every 14 full moons in a full moon cycle, he added.

The New Year’s Day supermoon is only the first of five supermoons that will occur for the whole new year and the next one will be on Jan. 30. The most “super” supermoon of 2014 will occur on June 22-23.

According to US National Aeronautical and Space Administration, a full moon at perigee is up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than one at its farthest point, or apogee. The full Moon occurring less than one hour away from perigee is a near-perfect coincidence that happens only every 18 years or so.

But, NASA said, the astronomical community uses the term “perigee-syzygy” or “perigee moon” for the phenomenon and the term “supermoon” is used by astrologers.

Astrologers claim new moons are times of new beginnings and Wednesday’s supermoon was extra special because a new moon on New Year’s Day does not happen frequently.

“Our felt experience of the energy created by the configuration of the planets on January 1st will set the tone for the rest of 2014,” Judy Suzanne Reis Tsafrir MD said on women’s website Better After 50.

“So the alignments on New Year’s Day will have a symbolic influence on the whole unfolding of the year ahead. In this particular instance we are therefore blessed with an atmosphere of tremendous intensity, not only for the holiday season, but for 2014 as a whole,” she added.

“This is likely to be a year of tremendous growth and transformation for us all, and as such exciting, but also not necessarily easy to navigate. So cut yourself and your loved ones some slack and make self-care a priority,” Tsafrir said.

American astrologer Mathew Currie said the New Year’s Day new moon will be in the House of Capricorn.

“New Moons are often a good time to plan out what you’re doing and what you want to achieve for the next month, and Capricorn has a reputation for being solid and dependable. This year, with the proper timing and effort, you might be able to extend that spirit throughout the year,” he said.

“New Year’s Resolutions can be the sort of thing where one merely pays lip service to the big changes that are needed but never really get addressed... this New Moon’s energy could be just what you need to blast through your personal obstacles,” Currie wrote on the website belief.net.

If you a little ashamed to start the year with astrological predictions, you can celebrate the supermoon with the coinciding Quadrantid meteor shower that will occur from Jan. 1 to 7, according to Pagasa.

The meteor shower will radiate from the constellation Bootes with at least 40 meteors visible per hour, peaking on Friday and Saturday. With Rio N. Araja
