The self-powered cyborg COCKROACHES set to clean up our cities
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/

-- Battery uses sugar in the insect's body to power electronics
-- Sensors can be mounted on the insect's back
-- Swarms could be sent into dangerous situations such as nuclear power plants to check radiation levels
-- Could also check city pollution as they fly around

It may sound like a terrifying science fiction baddie, but Japanese researchers have revealed the first cyborg cockroaches - and say they could help keep our cities clean.

The team created a radical new battery that creates energy from sugar in the insect's body.

They now hope to build giant 'swarms' of their cyber insects to create large sensor networks for chemicals and pollutants.

Japanese researchers say the tiny self powered cockroach backpacks they have developed could help polluted cities by monitoring levels

Osaka University and the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) co-developed the fuel cell, which measures 20 x 15mm and can be mounted on an insect.

They say the work will lead to forming a wireless sensor network with cyborg insects.

The fuel cell was announced at IEEE MEMS 2014, a San Francisco conference.

If the power source is combined with a technology to control an insect, it will become possible to use insects for wirelessly transmitting various sensor signals.

Flying cyborg insects might realize a wide-area sensor network, eliminating the need to deploy many wireless sensor networks, and be able to go into dangerous areas.

'Insects are extremely successful animals, living almost everywhere on the earth,' the researchers wrote.

HOW IT WORKS

The fuel cell generates electricity by using trehalose (sugar) contained in the insect's body fluid.

It consists of electrodes, a tank of body fluid and needle-like pipe which is inserted into the insect.

The inside of the tank is separated by a dialysis membrane.

Trehalose is broken down by enzymes (trehalase and mutarotase) to produce glucose.

Glucose is then oxidized on the positive electrode side, and oxygen is generated on the negative electrode side (oxidation-reduction reaction), creating a simple battery that can power electronics the insect carries.

'High performing micro-robots have been  developed by mimicking their functions and structures.

'Insect cyborgs which are robots controlled by electric stimulation of their brain  and neurons are desired for rescue, environmental  monitoring and working in a radiation environment.'

However, researchers have, until now, found it tough to power the cockroach-mounted gadgets.

'We generated power using electrochemical reactions with trehalose,' the researchers said.

'The self-circulation system of CHL actuated by the abdominal motion and the  pressure difference of the dorsal vessel was developed  by connecting a tube with a built in check-valve to a  cockroach.

'We expect an onsite semi-permanent  power source for insect cyborgs will be possible by combining the IH-BFC and the self-circulation system.

Dragonfly Spy

The first insect-sized aerial vehicle (insectothopter, developed to explore intelligence collection via miniature devices). The CIA's R&D team created the bug in the 70s, and it became the first flight of an aerial vehicle the size of an insect.

Next time a pesky dragonfly is humming over your shoulder, deny everything. (http://www.oddee.com/)
