The two black holes pair is the closest of other black holes seen yet, said Zoltan Haiman, an astronomer at Columbia. Zoltan added that the collision of this supermassive black hole pair will helps understand the growth rate of black holes and galaxies. Also, it will test the fundamental property of space-time i.e. its ability to carry vibrations, gravitational waves, which are produced during the time of collision.
The research paper said, "By estimating the combined and relative mass of PG 1302-102's black holes, they narrow down the pair's predicted crash time to between 20,000 and 350,000 years from now with a best estimate of 100,000 years. (The predicted crash time by Graham's team was 10,000 to several million years from now with a best estimate of 250,000 years)."
In the recent years, astronomers have discovered more black holes than earlier predicted. The core of our own Milky Way galaxy, contains a supermassive black hole of about 4.3 million solar masses.
