IT WAS a miserable week in world news - but history shows it often has been.

Between today's latest incident, Boston Marathon bombings, the carnage in Iraq and yesterday's fertiliser plant disaster in West near Waco in Texas, it's understandable if you feel a little down about the state of the world today.

Too many horror stories, too many innocent deaths. Up to 15 from the West explosion. Fifty from an abhorrent attack in Iraq. Three in Boston, including eight-year-old Martin Richard, whose mother and sister were also grievously injured. And at least one from a shooting at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Our hearts were in our mouths watching footage of the colossal West explosion, recorded on a mobile phone, particularly when we heard bystander and brave teenager Khloey Hurtt’s reaction.

"Dad, dad… I can’t hear anything … please get me out of here…. Oh my god, please get me out of here," she said.

It's all stomach-churning to dwell on. We even have statistics on how depressing it's been, thanks to satirical news service The Onion.

"According to a new poll by the Pew Research (Centre), when reached for comment this week, 93 per cent of Americans responded: "Okay, enough's enough here, you have seriously got to be kidding me with this week," the made-up report said.

Mid-April has a terrible track record of tragedy, though - especially in the modern United States.

We were particularly reminded of this given how close the explosion in West was to Waco, the home of an infamous massacre this day 20 years ago.

Seventy-six men, women and children lost their lives there, after a Texan ranch of a religious cult was set alight by federal officials to trigger an end to a months-long siege.

On the same day in 1995, another monstrous explosion rocked the world. 168 lives were extinguished in the Oklahoma City bombing.

In 1999, on the 20th of that month, Columbine High School in Colorado was the scene of one of the first major school shootings. Earlier this week, former and current students and staff at Virginia Tech university gathered to remember the 32 people who were shot dead during this week in 2007.

Much hope that we might stop those killings was extinguished this week, with US senate blocking laws backed by President Obama which would crack down on the country's deadly firearm trade.

Three years ago tomorrow, the seas of the Gulf of Mexico turned black when the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in a spill that did not stop for six months. If there was ever a metaphor for the cruel month of April, that is it.
