Commentary: The act of truth telling: signal of a fresh start
Baguio City (29 June 2005) -- The outburst of emotions from the President’s detractors over her statement is a far cry of the hand of forgiveness extended by ordinary Filipinos. The President’s statement of apology signals another fresh start. There are more pressing problems to face and must move on; kicking and cursing will get us nowhere. The Filipino people are more concerned about the improvement of their lives amid economic hardships, and most of them still believe in President Arroyo.
The markets are still in a wait-and-see posture. The President has spoken but now the sector awaits concrete action. For our part, we must press-on dishing out very swift, very big and very bold moves to reform our society once and for all. We have finally let the cat out of the bag and we should not waste time in regaining the initiative. The President met with business leaders yesterday and it is hoped that their positive perception and confidence will have the natural effect of allaying concerns over the economy.
The Presidency has been strengthened by the act of truth telling. The President’s statement of apology has already settled the issue of who is in the Captain’s seat and who has the moral authority to lead this country. Things will quiet down as the processes of government are no longer hobbled by controversy. The government is making a good start in focusing anew to the implementation of economic and fiscal reforms. (PIA)
