Dumaguete City (29 June 2005) -- The local Customs chief assured that the
Dumaguete port is safe and that all security measures are being strictly implemented.
Dr. Medolita N. Cabanag, Acting Port Collector of Customs, gave the assurance after the Bureau of Customs has tightened its inspection of all incoming shipments following the recent apprehensions of contraband at the Manila port, the latest of which was a large shipment of guns allegedly for destabilizers of the government.
Cabanag said there are no big foreign vessels that dock at the Dumaguete port for importation. "Our port is an export-oriented port for coconut oil, copra, molasses and ammonium nitrate," says Cabanag.
But still security measures are strictly implemented at the Dumaguete port. The Bureau of Customs, Maritime Police, Coast Guard and if the situation calls for it, the NBI and CIDG, all work as one team in seeing to the security of the port here, assures Cabanag.
Aside from this, several plainclothesmen are also roaming the port, keeping an eye on the cargos. (PIA)
