#26
Would you be happy with Mel Torme's "Frenesi"?
#27
You can download the YouTube downloader for free.  Just search the 'net for it.

As for "Frenesi" and "Little Things Mean a Lot", I haven't come across them either on YouTube.  You could try searching the various torrent sites for selections that contain these songs, though.

When I say "the criminally insane" I'm not talking about kleptomaniacs and the like.  I'm talking about the criminally insane who inflict inhuman and unimaginable cruelty on their victims and who take their lives because they feel the compulsive need to do it.  People like Charles Manson and David Berkowitz.  How is society ever safe from them?

When I say "hardened criminals" I'm not talking about mere recidivism or repeat offenders.  I'm talking about people who have shown no compunction in taking lives in committing their crimes that fall nothing short of heinous.  In prison, where they become larger than life, they perpetuate a system that makes even more hardened criminals.

My uncle on my mother's side was an OFW and my younger brother is an OFW and what I've always disliked is how relatives no matter how distant, bisan pa gani og in-law ra, and "relatives" come to you or to them as if they are entitled to something.  Kanus-a man ni nasugod nga batasana?  Ok ra kung modawat kung naay ihatag pero di na unta mag-una-una pa og pangayo.  Sa ahong huna-huna mura'g mas kugihan ma'g Pilipino sa una.
#44
I'm split on this.  I am for leniency on offenders who may have been driven into committing a crime because of poverty but I have no compassion for the criminally insane or for hardened criminals.

Yes, garlic will work.  In fact, most of the condiments in your kitchen will work. :)  Seriously, the legends say that they don't like salt, vinegar, garlic, and maybe some other stuff.  Because of their heightened senses, odors that are merely annoying for us are unbearable to them.  Holy water, beninditahang lukay (blessed palm fronds), and bagacay (a kind of bamboo) are also said to be effective against them.  One more thing that separates them from vampires is that in their human form they can walk around during the day like a normal human.

I don't believe this stuff but they are an interesting aspect of our culture.

There are few things in life more pleasing to the eyes and the other senses than the beauty of a woman. :)
#65
"Uy, 'wang!  Naa diay ka diha?" ;D
#66
According to Prof. Leoncio Deriada, although I can't cite him in toto, "jawa" was a word denoting a woman of power (I don't know if this referred to a babaylan or a tribal matriarch) in the Visayan islands of the pre-Hispanic Philippine archipelago.  Supposedly, the Spanish colonizers equated the term to "demon" or "devil" to discourage the pagan faith and practices and also to remove any vestige of power or authority from women.
#67
It is also said that if you eat of meat or food that is offered to you by an aswang, you will also become an aswang.  In giving it to you, they may disguise the human flesh of their victims as another kind of meat.  So you think you've just received a gift of pork or fish but it may be the arm or leg of a recent victim. :)
#68
I would say that the term aswang applies to a wide range of creatures of Philippine lower mythology and the manananggal is a kind of aswang.  There are aswang (I'll just use the singular to indicate the plural) with whole bodies too, though.  Aswang are mainly viscera suckers or viscera eaters and also victimize pregnant women and their unborn child.  According to the legends, they are also shapeshifters in that they may take the form of a dog or a pig.

Well, barring the unforeseen, I hope so. :D

Weird and Extreme / Re: Would You Approve of This?
October 24, 2008, 11:00:28 PM
It's difficult to make a judgment call on this since this is a practice borne out of the way they have lived for centuries.  Personally, I can imagine the difficulties and the self-denials that they go through daily but how else would we suggest that they live?  And how can we be sure that it would be better than theirs?  If this practice was transplanted to another culture, like ours for example, then I may find it disapprobatory.  As it is, I cannot disapprove.  If traditions are taken out of their cultural context, they are most likely perverted.
