I would say that the term aswang applies to a wide range of creatures of Philippine lower mythology and the manananggal is a kind of aswang. There are aswang (I'll just use the singular to indicate the plural) with whole bodies too, though. Aswang are mainly viscera suckers or viscera eaters and also victimize pregnant women and their unborn child. According to the legends, they are also shapeshifters in that they may take the form of a dog or a pig.

It is also said that if you eat of meat or food that is offered to you by an aswang, you will also become an aswang. In giving it to you, they may disguise the human flesh of their victims as another kind of meat. So you think you've just received a gift of pork or fish but it may be the arm or leg of a recent victim.

Yes, garlic will work. In fact, most of the condiments in your kitchen will work.

Seriously, the legends say that they don't like salt, vinegar, garlic, and maybe some other stuff. Because of their heightened senses, odors that are merely annoying for us are unbearable to them. Holy water, beninditahang lukay (blessed palm fronds), and bagacay (a kind of bamboo) are also said to be effective against them. One more thing that separates them from vampires is that in their human form they can walk around during the day like a normal human.

I don't believe this stuff but they are an interesting aspect of our culture.
