Masks keep you from spreading illness
April 29, 2009 -- Updated 1110 GMT (1910 HKT)

(CNN) -- In Mexico City, the government ran out of surgical masks after handing them out to one of every five residents.

Manufacturers and pharmacies in Europe are also reporting a surge in demand for face masks. And a Texas-based surgical mask producer says it's ramping up to meet demand and expects a shortage of masks.

But their real value seems to be in keeping people who are already ill from spreading the virus, rather than protecting healthy people, experts said.

Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Monday in a press briefing that the "evidence is not very strong" for masks' value outside of health care settings, and outside of settings in which people come into face-to-face contact with a person with an infectious disease.

"We would not recommend that people generally wear masks in their workplace as a precautionary measure," he said. Video Watch for more on staying safe from swine flu »

The World Health Organization (WHO) also warns against relying on face masks, especially for those not infected with the virus.

"They are mainly useful for people who are already sick, to prevent spreading. Not so much to stop people from catching the virus," Sarah Cumberland of the WHO told CNN.

The United Kingdom's Health Protection Agency also told CNN that the use of face masks was not necessary or recommended for protection against the swine flu virus.

Although it's not known for sure how much benefit a surgical mask has in preventing the transmission of swine flu, people who have the illness may consider wearing one as a way to reduce the amount they cough and sneeze onto others, said Dr. Arthur Reingold, head of the epidemiology division at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health.

"I think that this is a perfectly reasonable thing for someone with a respiratory illness to do," he said.

More effective than soft surgical masks is the N95, which is an example of a "respirator." This kind of tight-fitting face covering protects people against breathing very small particles, which may contain viruses. The downside is that it's more expensive, uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time and has to be custom fit, Reingold said, so it's suited for people working in high-risk laboratories.

Masks carry both physical and psychological benefits, said Dr. Julio Frenk, former health minister of Mexico and current dean of the Harvard School of Public Health.

Masks are a "reminder to people that they should avoid close contact with other persons," he said. "They also have this effect of isolating people and reminding them that they should not be kissing people, shaking hands, things like that."

For health care workers, it's important to have high-efficiency masks, which protect better against infectious diseases, he said.

But people in the United States should generally not have to wear masks because the cases are localized, he said. By contrast, it is more of a widespread problem in Mexico, especially in the capital city, a "huge urban conglomeration."

Measures such as closing schools are the most effective in stopping the spread of the disease, he said. Mexico's schools are closed until at least May 6.

By early Tuesday, the swine flu outbreak in Mexico was suspected in 152 deaths and more than 1,600 illnesses, the country's health minister said.

Swine flu has reached phase 4 (out of 6) on the pandemic scale, according to the WHO guidelines, but has not yet attained the status of global pandemic.

During a flu pandemic, people should consider wearing a face mask if they are sick with the flu, live with someone who has the flu or need to be in a crowded place, the CDC Web site says.

If you are caring for a person thought to have pandemic flu or will be close to someone who may have it, consider a respirator, for example an N95 or high-filtering face piece respirator, the CDC Web site says. Some health care workers, such as nurses and doctors, use respirators when dealing with patients who have airborne diseases, the CDC said. iReport.com: Worried about swine flu?

In the current swine flu situation, rather than masks, the CDC is pushing hand-washing, covering coughs and refraining from "giving somebody that little kiss of greeting," Besser said.

"If you're in an infected area or if you have the swine flu, it's probably best not to, to not give a kiss, but we're not recommending an end of affection during the period. It's a period of time when we need a little more affection, but doing it in a way that isn't going to transmit a respiratory disease would be a CDC approach," he said.

WHO says moving closer to swine flu alert phase 5
Wed Apr 29, 2009 12:00pm EDT

GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organization said on Wednesday it was moving closer to declaring a pandemic alert phase 5 for swine flu, which is spreading with no sign of slowing down.

No meeting has been set for the WHO's emergency committee, which could recommend an increase of the alert level to the second-highest level of the 1-to-6 scale.

"It appears we are moving closer to that, but we are not there yet," Keiji Fukuda, WHO acting assistant director-general, told a news conference.

Moving to phase 5 from the current phase 4 would be a significant step, he said.

WHO experts are examining the transmission patterns of swine flu for signs the disease is spreading among people who have not been to Mexico, or had close contact with those who had.

The United Nations agency has previously said it might raise its pandemic alert level to phase 5 if it were confirmed that infected people in at least two countries were spreading the disease to other people in a sustained way.

Fukuda said the WHO has confirmed 114 swine flu cases in Mexico, the United States, Canada, Israel, Spain, Britain, and New Zealand, with seven deaths in Mexico and one in the United States -- which U.S. authorities have said was a Mexican baby who traveled there for medical assistance.

"It is clear that the virus is spreading and we don't see any evidence of this slowing down at this point," he said.

In response to the swine flu outbreak that has left dozens dead in Mexico and spread to other countries, officials here launched a campaign to inform the public on virus symptoms, prevention and treatment.

The following information was provided by the Mexican Ministry of Health.

SYMPTOMS: Sudden fever above 38 degrees (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit), cough, headache, aching joints, nasal congestion and general fatigue.

DIAGNOSIS: Clinical examination of secretions from the nose and mouth in the first 24-72 hours after presenting symptoms, and a study of blood samples to detect existence of influenza virus.

TREATMENT: In confirmed cases, Mexican authorities have provided patients with flu drugs Seltamivir or Zanamivir under strict medical supervision, and warn against side effects in misuse.

The Mexican government said that the antiviral drugs would only be administered if infection is confirmed.

Authorities have reportedly some million doses on hand, although local media warn that pharmacies have run out of treatments.

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES: Wear a mask. Do not greet someone with a kiss or handshake; do not share food, cutlery or glasses. Ventilate homes and offices, keep clean common items such as telephones.

Woman raped, tortured

CAGAYAN DE ORO -- Not contented with raping her, a group of suspects shaved the head of a woman, burned her genitals with cigarettes and vandalized her body.

That's how police described the cruelty inflicted on the 24-year-old victim, a fourth year student in one of the universities in this city, who came Monday to a radio station seeking for help.

Panagbenga 2009 blog [1]

The staff of Bombo Radyo thought the victim was "insane because her hair is shaved off, including her eyebrows, and she's clad in a tattered, dirty t-shirt," said a police investigator at the Police Station 1 in Divisoria.

"She had the appearance of a mentally ill person. She didn't speak clearly, possibly because of psychological trauma she had suffered, and was not understood," said the police, who requested anonymity because the victim's grandmother asked authorities to be discreet on the incident when facing the media.

Abducted

The victim told police that she was abducted in broad daylight by a group of men at the basement parking area of Gaisano Mall along C.M. Recto Street last Wednesday.

She said the men -- the number of whom she can't recall -- forcibly dragged her into a waiting green pick-up type vehicle, tied up her feet and blindfolded her.

Although blindfolded, the victim said she could tell she was being transported somewhere in Bukidnon province.

"She said the car turned into many zigzag roads, and to her judgment, they were heading to Bukidnon," the investigator told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

The victim stays at the house of her relative in Barangay Macasandig but is a native of Gingoog City.

Text message

She said she was supposed to go to Gingoog City on the day she was abducted. She said she received a text message telling her that a car was already waiting at the mall's basement parking.

The woman said the sender was unknown to her, but she took a chance to find it out and got kidnapped instead.

Police said this particular claim is still subject for further verification, and that they did not immediately try to explore how and why the sender knew her number.

"We had to let her freely narrate the incident. We did not ask questions right there and then because she was still in a confused and shocked state," the investigator said.

At the place where the kidnappers brought her, the woman said the suspects alternately raped her, burned her genital area and some parts of her body, and vandalized it with a marker pen.

Investigators said the woman appeared to have burns on her right arm when they brought her to the Police Station 1 Monday morning. On her body, written were the words "bigas ka lang."

Mentally ill

The victim said the suspects dumped her at the McArthur Park in Velez Street around 3 a.m. Monday.

She said she tried to get help from bystanders but she was turned away, thinking she was mentally ill.

Police said they fetched the woman from Bombo Radyo after receiving a call from the radio station.

It was learned that the woman's relatives had reported to the police her unexplained disappearance two days after she was abducted.

Police Officer (PO) 3 Dante Mier of Macasandig Police Station said that on March 27, the victim's relatives reported that she failed to return home for two days already.

The woman, PO3 Mier said, is staying at the house of a relative in Barangay Macasandig.

As of this posting Monday, the victim is confined at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC). (ALR/Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)

Closed door meet for Ebarita slay case

MANDAUE CITY, Philippines â€" Mandaue City police officials will attend a closed-door session on Monday with the city's councilors to “allow them to freely talk” about reports that attempts were made to derail the murder investigation into the death of call center agent Lynn Vi Ebarita.

“We will invite the (victim’s) father to allow him to express his concern and have the police give him the status of the investigation and reassure him as well,” Vice Mayor Carlo Fortuna said.

The venue is the vice mayor’s office.

Senior Superintendent Orlando Ualat, Mandaue City Police Office chief, and Lynn Vi's father, Vicente Ebarita Jr., were invited to the special session.

Lynn Vi’s body was found inside Nikkei Garden Hotel with at least 24 stab wounds. Murder charges were filed against her close friend, Jonnelle Enfectana.

Amid denials by top police officials, Fortuna raised concerns over reports that a politician from Borongan town in Samar, the hometown of Enfectana, had tried to influence Mandaue investigators by using connections with senior police officials.

Three other murder suspects, described as Enfectana's relatives in Eastern Visayas, are still at large.

Fortuna said he received reliable information last week that politicians and ranking policemen outside of the city are influencing the investigation.

The vice mayor said the suspicion was bolstered by the transfer of Chief Inspector Eddie Recamara, head of the team that investigated the death of Ebarita.

Recamara is now assigned at the police station 4 in Barangay (village) Casuntingan.

Ang scene? maski gamay wala gyud silay na kuhang evidence?

Fortuna further said that the council will pass a resolution in their
session next Tuesday urging Ualat to retain Recamara in his post until
all evidence will be gathered and that Enfectana's four alleged
cohorts will be arrested.

Sana hulaton unta nila hangtod mahuman na ang kaso before they would this. Kay maka daot gyud sa case ang ilang gina buhat. Even though they say na normal rotation lang ang nahitabo pero naa pay dako na case na gi handle si Recamara. Dilikado gyud ma tamper ang mga evidences kung mapadayon gyud ni.

‘No pressure’ on police

POLICE Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Ronald Roderos yesterday said the transfer of Chief Insp. Eddie Recamara was the “judgment call” of the Mandaue City police director.

Asked about questions raised regarding Recamara’s transfer, Roderos said that Mandaue City Police Office Director
Orlando Ualat only informs him of his decisions to transfer officers after the orders have been carried out.

This is why, he said, he may not attend the council session seeking his and Ualat’s explanation on Recamara’s relief.

Recamara headed the Investigation and Detective Management Bureau (IDMB), which investigated the death of call center supervisor Lynn Vi Ebarita. His team was responsible for the filing of a complaint against Jonelle Enfectana.

Valentine's 2009 blog [1]

Before the case could be wrapped up, however, he was transferred as chief of Station 4 in Mandaue City.

Vice Mayor Carlo Fortuna plans to invite Roderos and Ualat to shed light on the officer’s relief.

“Col. Ualat is my representative. Wa man ko kahibaw bahin ana. Whatever is the invitation, we will send a representative from this headquarters,” he said.

As to the timing of the relief, Roderos said he will ask Ualat about it.

There were allegations that there was an attempt to cover up the investigation in the murder of Ebarita.

Ebarita’s father, Vic, wrote to City Councilor Diosdado Suico and asked that Recamara remain in the unit while the other suspects in his daughter’s murder are still at large.

Roderos said just because Recamara was transferred, it did not mean he could not continue helping them. He added that someone would be tasked to continue his work.

He said that the allegations that someone from Eastern Visayas has been pressuring them to relieve Recamara were just speculations.

Roderos said he has not received any calls from anybody asking them not to push through with the filing of the case against Enfectana.

“The only pressure there was to solve the case,” Roderos explained.

Regarding remarks made against the Cebu City Police Office’s failure to solve high-profile cases quickly like Mandaue City, Roderos said they should not be demoralized.

“Dili man ni lumbaanay (This is not a race),” Roderos told reporters.

He assured that he was satisfied with how the CCPO managed to drastically bring down the crime rate.

“Dili nato i-compare. Crime is unique. Some are perpetrated by amateurs, some by hired killers. Some witnesses come forward immediately, some are very hesitant,” Roderos said.

He pointed out that he has constantly rewarded personnel of the CCPO when they have solved cases.

“We want to investigate carefully. We want to tighten the case so that it will result in conviction. That is the goal there. Slowly and but surely,” Roderos said. He added that he did not compare the two offices and gave out rewards and commendations when they deserved it.

“They should not be demoralized. This should serve as a challenge to them. Maningkamot, ba. They are doing their best. I am not comparing them. I am rewarding them,” he told reporters. (MEA)

My condolences to you gOdWiLLmAkEaWa and the rest of the family of Lynn Vi.

Lisod gyud bitaw ang mawad-an ug someone that has neen part of our lives, samot na kay dili normal ang ilang kamatayon. Who ever are responsible of this crime should face the justice that are rightfully for them. Sana ma solve na gyud ang case para matagaan na ug peace of mind ang victim and her family.

To those who are dragged to this case, samot na kadtong mga na panganlan ni Jonnel, I do hope they present their selves na. May it be with their atty's just to make sure na they were also given the benefit of the doubt kung para sa ila innocente gyud sila and were just falsely named by the suspect.  If they were proven na innocent gyud, then good for them for they will be cleared from all accusations from both the victim's family and sa mga mata sa mga tao. But if they are indeed guilty? Then May true justice  prevail.

Call Center supervisor's slay: Murder charge filed vs suspect
Updated February 04, 2009 12:00 AM

CEBU - The Mandaue City Prosecutor’s Office said it has prima facie evidence to indict Jonelle Enfectana and her accomplices in court for the killing of call center employee Lynn Vi Ebarita last January 19.

PO2 Protacio Tago, of the Mandaue City Police Office Investigation and Detective Management Bureau yesterday, said that last Monday noon, assistant city prosecutor Bienvinido Mabanto recommended that a murder case be filed against Enfectana and her accomplices.

No recommendation for bail was set.

The result of Mabanto’s recommendation was then submitted to City Prosecutor Ferdinand Peque for review and approval.

From the city prosecutor’s office, the clerk of court last Monday then received the case information in the presence of Enfectana at around 4 pm. and judge Marilyn Yap of the RTC Branch 28, finally issued her commitment order to Mandaue City Jail.

Enfectana was detained at the jail around 6 pm. last Monday.

Ebarita was found dead last January 22 inside Nikkei Garden Hotel, four days after she was stabbed dead. Her body bore more than 24 stab wounds.

“The evidence at hand may be circumstantial in nature and unfortunately this investigator is of the finding and opinion that this web of circumstantial evidence if taken all together would result to undeniable conclusion that respondent Jonelle Enfectana is probably guilty for the crime of murder in conspiracy with other persons whose identities are still to be ascertain as of date,” Mabanto ruled.

Enfectana was arrested after a wallet owned by the victim was taken from the premises of the house where the suspect rented a room.

Police also said that they have yet to verify the identity of Enfectana’s accomplices who are believed to be in Borongan, Samar.

Meanwhile, acting Mayor Michael Rama admired the Mandaue City police investigators for their quick solution to the killing of Ebarita.

Homicide investigators in Mandaue City headed by Insp. George Aniñon, who used to be a Cebu City policeman, also successfully solved the murder of 24-year-old Emilie Nuñeza just days after the latter was killed on January 23.

Rama challenged policemen in Cebu City to work hard to solve the controversial killings in the city, including the murder of assistant city prosecutor Patrick Osorio, who was shot and killed by still unidentified men while driving his vehicle in barangay Mambaling on his way home last January 6.

But Acting Vice Mayor Hilario Davide III, head of the Police Coordinating and Advisory Council, said we should give the Cebu City policemen a chance to try their best to solve the case.

“Paswerte-swerte ra man god ning pag-imbestigar. Kon walay makatug-an maglisud g’yod ang mga imbestigador pagsulbad sa mga krimen. Mahinungdanon g’yod ang abag sa community,” a Cebu City police investigator said. â€"Flor Z. Perolina and Rene U. Borromeo/BRP   (THE FREEMAN)

Yes and it would be better for Evelyn kung mu voluntarily present siya sa iyang self na magpa interview and magpa kita siya sa hotel staff with and without the fisherman’s hat and dark glasses para maka ingon gyud sila didto kung siya ba gyud or dili para ma clear iyang name kung dili man gyud siya guilty.

Probably guilty, says prosecutor

MANDAUE City Prosecutor Ferdinand Peque approved the filing of a murder charge against Jon-nelle Enfec-tana for the death of her close friend, call center supervisor Lynn Vi Ebarita.

Assistant Prosecutor Bienvenido Mabanto recommended no bail. Enfectana is now detained at the Mandaue City Jail.

The resolution to charge Enfectana in court was approved 11 days after Ebarita’s body was found behind a hotel room. She had been stabbed 24 times. Enfectana, the victim’s friend and co-worker at TeleTech, initially cooperated with investigators but was later tagged as a suspect.

Mabanto said the evidence against her so far is circumstantial, but “this web of circumstantial evidence, if taken all together, would result in an undeniable conclusion that (Enfectana) is probably guilty of murder in conspiracy with other persons whose real identities are still be to ascertained as of this date.”

Inquiry

The prosecutor’s resolution said that on Jan. 21, a day before Ebarita’s body was found, Enfectana went to the hotel and asked about Ebarita “who was reportedly missing for several days already.”

She left with the hotel’s staff her phone numbers and requested them to relay information about Ebarita’s whereabouts.

Mabanto’s resolution also stated that witnesses saw the victim, Enfectana and the latter’s cousin together that night.

Ebarita arrived at her family’s stall in Fuente Osmeña around 5 p.m. on the day of the Sinulog parade, where Enfectana and a woman she introduced as her cousin Evelyn arrived an hour and 30 minutes later.

“While Evelyn was at the retail booth, she was observed not to say a word except when speaking to Enfectana in Waray-Waray,” the resolution said.

Enfectana’s cousin, whose identity remains uncertain, was later recognized by hotel personnel as the person who pre-paid P3,000 for two nights in Room 309 of the Nikkei Garden Hotel. It was behind that room where the body was found.

“Evelyn’

Mabanto’s resolution described Enfectana’s cousin, whom she introduced as Evelyn, as wearing “a fisherman’s hat and dark glasses, the same description given by the victim’s sister and TeleTech employees.”

This matched the hotel personnel’s description of the woman who paid for Room 309.

Sun.Star Cebu asked Mabanto if he established the cousin’s identity and address from Enfectana, but the inquest prosecutor said he did not get any substantial information from her.

The Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) submitted their complaint and the supporting affidavits of witnesses against Enfectana.

She did not submit any counter-affidavit or any evidence, while her lawyer is questioning the absence of warrants during a search in the house where she rents a room and her subsequent arrest.

Laundry

An ABS-CBN report showed Enfectana politely refusing an interview in the Mandaue City Jail yesterday.

On Jan. 28, with the permission of Enfectana’s landlady Felicisima Go, a police team found Ebarita’s wallet, reportedly hidden under a pile of wood and covered with a GI sheet, in the laundry area.

The resolution further stated that after a week’s absence, Enfectana returned to her rented room in the afternoon of Jan. 19 and washed some clothes in the laundry area. (OCP)

Wa man gamita ang ilang pagkabrayt. O duna ba kahay laing nagpahipi nga katarungan?.

Public lang ba? How about the private high schools? Nakakahiya naman kung one day magkita ang isang public high school student and a private one and  mag spanish ang public higschool student bigla. Hahahaha!!! I'm not saying na dahil private ang isang student ay dapat siya ang lamang. It is just na alam natin na mas mahal ang tuition fees ang mga private schools and di man lang makaka sagot ang isang private school student if it is in spanish?

I learned spanish during my rizal days in college, and it was one hell of a year for me. Hehehehe lalo na when my teacher asked me to recite the el felebus turismo  & the La solidaridad in spanish.

I think it would be very helpful kung highschool palang sila a maturuan na sila ng spanish.

This angered the guy then gi pasakitan niya ang girl until nakuyapan kani. iya dayon di lugos kini and gi gapos sa liog ug mga kamot. But when the girl returned to consciousness ni ingon kini na isumbong niya ang guy sa police. This time the guy strangled the girl til kini namatay.

oi...that's not true, lynn vi's body WAS NOT CUT INTO 2. they used 2 garbage bag... 1 to cover lynn vi's upper body and the second one is to cover her lower limbs.  then they sealed it with a packaging tape. so horrible!

Mao ba? Mao man ngud ang ingon nila sa ako. Pero Thank goodness na dili diay tinuod na gi tunga kay it would be very hard sa part sa family ni Lynn na gi patay na gani then anaon pa? Thanks for the clarification 2gu4u.

Police tags 4 others in party with slain call center agent

THE evidence submitted in the complaint for the murder of call center worker Lynn Vi Ebarita identified her companions on the night she disappeared.

According to the daily staff journal of the Mandaue City Police Office, Ebarita was with two other women, Jonnelle Enfectana and Evelyn Apelado, and three men identified as Wabert Diu, Arnel Babon and a certain Roxan or Raxo.

Shown a sketch of the “Tina Panganiban” who reserved Room 309 of the Nikkei Garden Hotel, three witnesses also said in their joint affidavit that the woman was Apelado. Ebarita’s body was found behind that room.

Her boyfriend in the United States also confirmed in an online chat that Ebarita was with some men and women before she was killed.

The boyfriend said he called up the victim’s cell phone three days after she failed to come home and another woman answered the phone. He also heard that woman talking to some men.

The printed chat messages between the victim’s boyfriend and Enfectana was the document she gave investigators before she was arrested.

Authorities are trying to determine if the others were involved in Ebarita’s death.

Stabbed 24 times and stuffed in a plastic bag, Ebarita was found last Jan. 22. Enfectana has since been named a respondent in a murder complaint.

Investigators recovered the victim’s wallet in Enfectana’s boarding house on the day they arrested her.

Enfectana, through her lawyer, is contesting the legality of her arrest and the search in her room, both of which were not covered by warrants.

The head of the Investigation and Detective Management Branch, Chief Insp. Eddie Recamara, said in his affidavit that the house owner approved their search and was even there when they discovered the victim’s wallet.

In the inquest proceedings, Recamara and his three investigators submitted, among others, the progress report of MCPO Director Senior Supt. Orlando Ualat; the MCPO daily staff journal prepared by PO3 Charlie Callet; the joint affidavit of three TeleTech employees; and the joint affidavit of the victim’s sister and relatives.

They also submitted the joint affidavit of the arresting officers Recamara and investigators SPO1 Arnulfo Quiachon Jr., SPO1 Rico Cabatingan and PO3 Protacio Tago Jr.

Recamara requested that the names of the witnesses be withheld, so as not to expose them to unnecessary risk.

Ualat’s progress report revealed that a certain Tina Panganiban rented Room 309 at 1 p.m. last Jan. 18.

At 9 p.m. that same day, the victim was with Enfectana, Apelado and Diu, drinking at the corner of Escario and Juana Osmeña St. in Cebu City.

The report further stated that Apelado and Diu were Enfectana’s neighbors in Tacloban City.

The staff journal named the other suspects as Babon and Rackso, from Borongan town in Samar. The two were also with the group that night.

“These names mentioned could not be contacted and never showed up during the conduct of the investigation,” the journal said.

Ualat’s report stated that at 1 a.m. on Jan. 19, hotel personnel who delivered beer to Room 309 saw the victim and “Tina Panganiban” inside.

Three TeleTech employees executed an affidavit stating that at 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 18, they met the victim, Enfectana and her cousin Apelado. The women reportedly said they were waiting for a taxi.

The call center employees said that Apelado wore a fisherman’s hat and big dark sunglasses, even if it was nighttime. “Tina Panganiban” wore the same things as well, the hotel’s front desk in-charge later told the police. (OCP)

yeah lisod na gyud karon ang panahon. Dili na gyud kasaligan. Pero sa akong panan-aw dako gyud ang pag salig ni Lynn sa iya kay ni kuyog pa man gyud siya sa hotel with this so called "cousin" maski karon pa sila nagka ila.
Grabiha pud no? 24 ka stab wounds??!! then after that gi putol pa gyud ang body into 2 parts para ma arang lang on each black plastic bag ang upper and lower part of the body ni Lynn.

I do hope ma trace ra nila kung kinsa mga pangalan sa mga naa didto that time para ma solve na kung kinsa ang mga nag patay ni Vi.

Call center slay suspect charged
By Flor Z.Perolina Updated January 31, 2009 12:00 AM

Jonnelle Enfectana, main suspect in the killing of call center agent Lynn Vi Ebarita, appears with her lawyer, Michael Enriquez (left), during inquest proceedings before prosecutor Bienvenido Mabanto Jr. Joy Torrejos

Cebu - A murder charge was lodged before the City Prosecutors Office yesterday against the principal suspect in the killing of a call center employee two weeks ago.

Mandaue City police filed the complaint against Jonnelle Enfectana, a close friend and co-worker of TeleTech Call Center supervisor Lynn Vi Ebarita, soon after the Mandaue Hall of Justice opened at 8 a.m.

During the inquest proceedings, the police presented to City Fiscal Bienvinido Mabanto the affidavits of witnesses that could prove that Ebarita, Enfectana and another woman, who was also believed to be “involved” in the crime, were together prior to the killing.

Based on the account of the first three witnesses, at 12 p.m. on January 18, Enfectana called up the victim and asked her to bring the three cellular phones that were left in their house in barangay Cubacub and bring it to their Sinulog booth at the Fuente Osmena.

Ebarita, together with two others arrived with the phones at around 5 p.m. but left in a few while to have dinner with her two com

panions and returned at 6:30 p.m. Later, Enfectana arrived with a female companion, whom she introduced as her cousin named as certain “Evelyn.”

Enfectana told Ebarita that someone has invited them for a drinking spree and they left the booth at 8:45 p.m.

On the same date, at around 9:30 p.m., three other witnesses who are friends of both Ebarita and Enfectana said that they saw both the suspect and the victim together with a woman whom they did not know standing along the road. Ebarita allegedly called the witnesses’ attention and during their conversation, she introduced to them Evelyn also as her cousin.

The witnesses said they were amazed because it was almost 10 p.m. and Evelyn was still wearing a fisherman’s hat and black sunglasses making them think she was a peculiar lady. They also observed that Enfectana appeared bothered during the meeting.

At the police station, where they were shown a cartographic sketch of the suspect who registered at the Nekkei Garden Hotel as Tina Panganiban, the witnesses said they recognized that the sketch was the same woman that Enfectana introduced to them as her cousin.

During the inquest proceedings, police said that among the other circumstantial evidences is that they believed Ebarita’s cell phone was with Enfectana because the victim’s officemates were still receiving text messages from her even if she was believed to be dead already. Police suspected the text messages came from the suspect who pretended to be the victim to misled and delay the discovery of the brutal killing.

And because she has the victim’s cell phone, police said the suspect also pretended as Ebarita during a chat with victim’s boyfriend and use the “codename” which only Ebarita and her boyfriend knew.

The victim’s US based Fil-Am boyfriend also doubted that his girlfriend’s cell phone was with the suspect, and it is from where Enfectana knew the “name,” which he and the victim call each other when they chat or exchange text messages.

During the inquest, Enfectana also denied that she asked for a “police protection” contrary to what was earlier recorder in the police blotter that she asked for it after she allegedly received a death threat.

PO3 Protacio Tago said they granted Enfectana’s wish for a police escort as they also wanted to protect her after she received a “threat.” But they later learned that the suspect’s cellular phone was dual SIM and she just used her other number and sent the threat herself.

Police said Enfectana was arrested after they found out that the victim’s wallet was in her possession last January 28, but denied the suspect was restricted of her freedom to go out prior to that dates.

Enfectana’s lawyer Michael Enriquez questioned the way his client, saying it was a warrant-less arrest as it was no longer part of a hot pursuit operation. Mabanto, however, said it his office will be the one to determine whether the arrest was illegal or not.

Enriquez also objected to the number of hours before his client was brought to the fiscal’s office for the inquest.

Mabanto explained to him that the 36-hour reglamentary period is not consist of continuous hours but refers to the time that the fiscal is holding office. “Don’t expect me to be here at dawn,” he said. â€" /WAB (THE FREEMAN)

If they they were saying na wala siya sa hotel that time then how come naa niya ang wallet and cellphone ni Vi? Kung relatives gyud ni Jonnelle ang naa that time and Jonnelle being the one that arranged na naa sila didto then dako kaayo ang chances na naa pud si Jonnelle that time.

Police file murder charges vs. suspects

POLICE filed yesterday the murder complaint against the suspects in the killing of call center supervisor Lynn Vi Ebarita.

Upon the advice of her lawyer, detained suspect Jonnelle Enfectana, 26, a co-worker and close friend of the victim, refused to sign a waiver of detention since they will question the legality of her arrest and the search on her boarding house.

Both the arrest and search were done without warrants.

Michael Enriquez, Enfectana’s lawyer, asked to be placed on record that the suspect was brought to the Mandaue City Prosecutor’s Office after the 36-hour reglamentary period already lapsed.

Prosecutor Bienvenido Mabanto, during the inquest, gave the suspect a chance to submit controverting evidences but Enfectana, through her lawyer, declined to do so.
Based on the evidence submitted by the police, Mabanto promised to resolve the case next week.
Enfectana will remain detained at the Subangdaku Police Station.

The suspect was arrested last Wednesday for the killing of Ebarita, whose body was found last Jan. 22 with 24 stab wounds and placed in two sealed garbage bags at
the Nikkei Garden Hotel in Mandaue City.

Ebarita, a single mother of a seven-year-old child and Enfectana’s supervisor at call center firm TeleTech, was believed to have been killed last Jan. 18 or 19 while
drinking with Enfectana’s relatives inside the hotel.

She is believed to have refused to have group sex with the suspects.

Ebarita’s father said he has forgiven the suspect and he just wants to let the law take its course.

“Kung di man ugaling siya (Enfectana), motug-an na lang siya kung kinsa (If she didn’t kill my daughter, she should just identify the culprits),” he told Sun.Star Cebu.

Enriquez, in an interview after inquest, said his client did not sign the waiver of detention since they will question the validity of the arrest and the eventual detention of his client.

“If we sign a waiver, it would necessarily follow nga mamatay among claim for an illegal arrest,” Enriquez said.

Enriquez also said the evidence against his client are all circumstantial and not enough to link her to the crime.

“There was never an instance and no witness that (could point that) she (Enfectana) was in the hotel when the crime was committed,” he said.

On the police’s possible use of the printout of the chat messages between Enfectana and Ebarita’s boyfriend a day or days after her death, Enriquez said there are rulings and standards to be followed on the use of electronic evidence.

He said it is up to the prosecutor to assess if the rules apply.

He said the justifications given by the police on the arrest of Enfectana without a warrant would not suffice to qualify their operation as a “hot pursuit.”

He also described as illegal the absence of a warrant during the search on Enfectana’s boarding house. Police found Ebarita’s wallet there.

He said his client shared the room with another boarder. Also, many people had access to the common wash area where the victim’s wallet was found.

Mabanto said he had asked the suspect during the inquest proceedings, which started at 8:30 a.m. and ended at 3:40 p.m. yesterday, if there was an instance when her co-boarder and Ebarita met before the crime was committed.

Enfectana said no.

With regard to the search that led to the discovery of the victim’s wallet in Enfectana’s boarding house, Chief Insp. Eddie Recamara explained to Mabanto that they secured the permission of the house owner.

Together with the complaint sheet the police submitted to the prosecutor’s office were affidavits of three TeleTech employees who saw Enfectana and Ebarita during the Sinulog; the suspect’s landlady; the victim’s sister; the victim’s neighbors; the investigators and arresting officers.

They also submitted the victim’s wallet with its contents, the autopsy results and the printout of the chat between the suspect and the victim’s boyfriend. (OCP)

If tinuod na naay mga male relatives si Jonnelle na ni anhi for the Sinulog celebration then I do hope na makuha sa mga police ang mga names nila para mapangita and ma question sila. But if hired killers ang mga gi kasabot ni Jonnelle that night to trap and kill Vi, then let us just pray na madakpan ra sila. Coz if not, im sure nanago na to palayo.

yeah, murag anad na kaayo siya sa iyang nabuhat. Psycho gud siguro ning bayhana?

He says he’ll testify vs. suspect; lawyer to push attack on warrantless search and arrest

THE boyfriend of a slain call center supervisor will return to the Philippines to testify against her close friend, identified by police as the primary suspect in her killing.

Jonnelle Enfectana, primary suspect in the killing of Lynn Vi Ebarita, has denied involvement in the crime. Her lawyer said he will question the search of Enfectana’s room and her arrest inside a hospital Wednesday afternoon, which were done without warrants.

Police are also not yet ruling out the possibility that Ebarita’s office mates may have been involved in her killing.

Chief Insp. Eddie Reca-mara of the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) said they already have the names of two of the four alleged accomplices of Enfectana. The two are from Boro-ngan town in Eastern Visayas. Police have yet to identify the two other accomplices, a man and a woman.

Recamara said printouts of online chat conversations and the recovery of Eba-rita’s wallet from Enfecta-na’s boarding house are strong pieces of evidence against her.

Recamara said Eba-rita’s boyfriend assured police via a long-distance call that he will return to the Philippines to testify against Enfectana.

Ebarita and her boyfriend were co-workers in a call center in Lapu-Lapu City. They then transferred to another business process outsourcing company in Mandaue City before the boyfriend left for the US and Ebarita joined TeleTech.

Police said that one thing that provoked the boyfriend’s suspicion was Enfectana’s use of a nickname that only his girlfriend knew and used.

Investigators believed that Enfectana gave police printouts of chat sessions between Ebarita and her boyfriend and between the boyfriend and Enfectana, to mislead police.

MCPO Deputy Director for Operations Bernard Tambaoan told reporters that Enfectana once applied for a P15,000 loan with Ebarita as guarantor. He said Enfectana again applied for a loan but Ebarita declined to be the guarantor. He said this angered Enfectana.

Last Jan. 18, some of Enfectana’s male relatives reportedly came to see her for the Sinulog. Investigators said the suspect may have arranged for a group sex session but that the victim refused.

Four days later, Eba-rita’s body was discovered stuffed inside a plastic bag.

Up until last Tuesday, police provided Enfectana with security because she said she received death threats. She collapsed on that day before she could sign a confession detailing her role in Ebarita’s death.

But when her lawyer Michael Enriquez came to see her on Tuesday night, Enfectana changed her mind and no confession was signed.

During the search at her boarding house, police found among Enfectana’s things Ebarita’s wallet, which contained her TeleTech card, a PhilHealth card, a North General Hospital card and credit cards.

Tambaoan said these were enough “circumstantial evidence” to arrest Enfectana.

Tambaoan also said they have two witnesses who are willing to execute affidavits. (OCP)

#53
There is a possibility na dili madayon ang plan kung ni kuyog ang friend na guy ni Vi, pero the chances of doing a crime na sure ang tanan na bz ang mga pulis sa pag bantay sa Sinulog would be a once a year chance na lisod siguro palapason sa mga killer.

Murag labo man pud gud kung about work ang reason why she was killed. Kung selos man gyud, then it would be sa US based bf ni Vi. kay why would Jonnelle be contacting the bf after Vi was already dead? Nakipag chat pa!
#54
Yeah, needed gyud na tanawon tanan angay na tanawon sa iyang emails kay tingalig naa pa diay sila makita na maka tabang sa sa case.

i think maayo nalang pud na wala nikuyog ang friend nimo na lalaki that time. Coz if the killing of Vi was really planned in the first place, tingalig ma among lang siya apil. One is that we know na naay hired killers that time na kuyog ni Jonnelle.
#55
Ah! Grabiha pud aning bayhana. Murag going easy ra kaayo siya sa picture da!

Hmmm.. kung fictitious man ang mga names na iyang gi hatag sa mga police, then she is hiding something gyud. Could they be relatives ba gyud kaha?
#56
Pagka pait pud oi! I think it woud be safe kung mu kuha man gyud ug maid, kanang kaila sa imong paryente or a friend para naa pud kay background kung kinsa ang imong saligan na mabilin sa balay.
#57
Hmmm there could be a possibility there. But maski kinsa naman pud ang i-blackmail siguradong mangita gyud ug kaila na mag bantay niya maski sa distansya man lang. If the victim and the killer met twice already and had gained the trust of the girl, there would be a big chance na mu kuyog ning girl. But sa reclamation area??? What was this girl thinking?
#58
Yeah that would really be very helpful for the case. Cant wait to read another update about  the case na gyud hinuon hehehe. Sana Justice would really win this time. This fight is for Lynn Vi Ebarita's family and child that would grow up knowing that he\she could not ever feel her mother's warm embrace ever again.

By the way asa man dapit ni sa tacloban kaha nag puyo ni si Jonnelle Enfectana? Coz a friend of mine want's to know kay tingalig silingan ra pud nila ni siya hahaha
#59
I think so too. but even though dili siguro sila professionals coz if they did it sa cr, then the possibility of a blood evidence to be seen on the crime scene would be minimal.  Samot na kay na limpyuhan na and room before the police or SOCO could inspect the room. And if they were really professional killers na nahire sa iyang amiga to kill her that night, then ngano man didto ra nila gi bilin ang body sa place where the crime happened? Im sure that they would think in advance that there would be a possibility na naay naka kita nila didto.
#60
yeah, maski nagpa kuyog nalang unta siya ug iyang kaila ba or amiga. At least mas safex2 na gamay. Maski na man gud na they already met twice, that didn't mean na kaila na siya sa guy. Samot na kay total stranger pa gyud.
#61
mao na ligi ning eyeball x2 na walay klaro. At least sa mall lang unta to then pagka human uli na.
#62
Grabiha gyud aning pagkahitabua oi! To think that they were close friends pa naman. I think that all were carefully planned na gyud daan k ngano man daw naa na dayon silay na acquire na plastic bag? Ang naka daot lang karon is that the police did a warantless search sa boarding house of the suspected friend. Dilikado na ma mapawalang bisa ang evidence na nakita nila didto kung ma rule out ng judge na illegal search an nahitabo.
