Here is something for the romantics;

Sonnet from the Portuguese 44: How do I Love thee? Let me Count the Ways
by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
      For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

At the age of 12 Henley became a victim of tuberculosis of the bone. In spite of this, in 1867 he successfully passed the Oxford local examination as a senior student. His diseased foot had to be amputated directly below the knee; physicians announced the only way to save his life was to amputate the other. Henley persevered and survived with one foot intact. He was discharged in 1875, and was able to lead an active life for nearly 30 years despite his disability. With an artificial foot, he lived until the age of 54. "Invictus" was written from a hospital bed.

ps
With this poem as a motto I survive many trials.

This is a very provoking question Ondoy Bran,  of course we don´t need another devil.  What we need is a figure comparable to Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore who governed the country to economic prosperity with his iron hand and discipline. This country is a melting pot, speaking in different languages is worth emulating. We need leaders with dignity and moral values.

People pls don´t forget that 5 billion US dollars was not accounted, this was a part of the money the government of Japan gave us for the  Japan reparation pay ( Marcos regime). This could have given  us an excellent financial resources for infrastructures and other economic developments.

I bought a flatiron which is European made, I complained that I can not use this in Bohol since the plugs are different, he heared it and gave me an adapter free.

Health and Food / Vitamin C, how important is it?
November 02, 2008, 06:19:46 PM
Vitamin C, are we overdosing?
By Angela Epstein
Vitamin C is commonly seen as the best way of warding off colds

As the season of colds begins, many of us reach for megadose Vitamin C supplements in the belief that they will stave off infection. But is the theory right - or are we, in fact, overdosing?

In 1970, Nobel Prize-winning chemist Linus Pauling proposed in his book, Vitamin C And The Common Cold, that taking a dose of 1,000mg a day could help fight the virus. The current recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C is only 40mg.

Despite Dr Pauling's faith, the evidence in support of his theories on Vitamin C has been mixed.

However, a recent review of 30 studies involving a total of 11,000 people found there was, in fact, no evidence that, for the average person, taking extra Vitamin C can stop sneezes, sniffles and coughs.

Researchers at the Cochrane Collaboration, an organisation that evaluates medical studies, did, however, conclude the vitamin may have health benefits other than keeping adult colds at bay, and that more studies on colds in children, and its affect on pneumonia, were needed.

There is no doubt that Vitamin C - or ascorbate, to give it its proper chemical name - has a number of vital functions, including tissue growth and repair, maintaining healthy gums and helping the body to absorb iron from food.

High doses won't do any harm as Vitamin C is water-soluble and can't be stored in the body. However, this means we need to consume it on a daily basis to maintain our health.

Deficiency of Vitamin C can lead to bleeding gums, 'liver spots' on the skin, depression and, in advanced cases, 'scurvy' - open sores forming on the body, loss of teeth and, in extreme cases, even death.
Here are excellent sources of  Vitamin C;

Lighting a candle is for 2 good reasons;
1. The lit candle reminds us of our Baptism, and the way that we share in the life of Christ by sharing in the life of the Church.

When we go, leaving the burning candle behind, we are reminded that our souls never leave the presence of God, in company with His Saints.

2. Prayer is not self-centered, it is God centered, and an important element is prayer for other people and causes. When lighting your candle, it is a very good idea to light a candle for those others you want to pray for.

There are still ethnic cleanising in these modern times! So you could imagine losing  love ones and not knowing his/her whereabouts.
This happened with my collegue, she is a Serb( Orthodox Catholic) and her husband a Croate
( Roman Catholic), she had a son from first marriage and they both got a son of their own. There was a heated argument about religion and ethnic belonging in the old history of Yugoslavia, the sons killed the man and was left  for 4 days in cellar and was threwn away 250 from their house.
It is the same with Armenians, Kurds and  Palestines, there are strong hatred because of the past history.

Wall of Pain - Zid boli
Wall of Truth about Martyrdom of Croatian People - The Voice of Croatian Victims

The Wall of Pain (Zid boli) in Zagreb is a memorial for all Croatians who were killed or disappeared during the Greater-Serbian aggression on Croatia (1990-1995). It was built in 1993 by mothers and relatives of killed and missing soldiers and civilians upon the initiative of Mrs Zdenka Farkas, and placed around the building where UN Peace Mission to Croatia had its headquarters. It has been built as an appeal for humanity and human rigts addressed to the UN. Croatia was in flame at that time, many towns under siege and fierce bombarding from earth and air.

The Wall of Pain consists of 13,650 red and black bricks.
Relatives wrote the names of missing people on the red ones,
the black ones symbolise the deads.

Kemna the first concentration camp in Germany!

The Concentration camp of Kemna was located at Wuppertal between Beyenburg and Oberbarmen in Germany.

History
The camp functioned  at the end of June 1933 and on January 19th, 1934. It was placed under the responsibility of the group of SA of Duesseldorf and of the police force of Wuppertal with the southern of the District of Duesseldorf. To 1.100 prisoners were locked up there under miserable conditions . The torture and arbitrary violence were the order of the day to the detriment of the prisoners.
They were mostly political oppositionists,  members of the Communist party of Germany and social democrat Party Germany which also includes the areas of  Duisburg, Duesseldorf, Krefeld and Essen.

SA,( Sturmabteilung ), this is the paramilitary unit which guards the prisoners

My parents were very strict. My father was an inveterate gambler, and my mother is busy  of  buying luxurious items. The family finances were in shambles. My mother always compares me to my cousins who were mostly convent bred.  I taste spankings for small misbehavior and I was forced to kneel before the altar to pray for my sins. It was imprinted in my young mind that God is a punishing God. The extreme  childhood forced me to worked hard and not to depend on anybody.
I promised to myself that my future children will never taste physical force in their upbringings and I made it.

Here you are folks!  Everyone be wary about this melamine scandal and the high incidence of kidney troubles nowadays. I got this email explaining what Melamine is all about;
China milk poisoning incidents make
everyone afraid to look at the daily news report. Everyday, the
reports are changing. No one can clearly tell us what to eat and not
to eat.

1.WHAT REALLY IS POISONED MILK!

It is the milk powder mixed with "MELAMINE"

What is Melamine use for,It is an industrial chemical
use in the production of melawares.

It is also used in home decoration.
" US resistant board"

Do you understand.  Melamine is use in industrial
production. it cannot be eaten!

2.Why is Melamine added in milk powder?

The most important nutrient in milk is protein. And Melamine has the
same protein that contains "NITROGEN"

Adding Melamine in milk reduces milk content and it is cheaper then
milk so it lowers capitalization.
It can give the business man more profit!

below is Melamine,  doesn't it look like milk
it doesn't have any smell, so cannot be detected!

3.When was it discovered?

Year 2007(BUS cats and dogs died suddenly, they found that pet
food from China contains Melamine.

Starting 2008, In China , an abnormal increase
in infant cases of kidney stones.

August 2008 China Sanlu Milk Powder tested
with Melamine

Sept. 2008,  (BNew Zealand gov't ask China to check this problem
Sept. 21, 2008, (BLots of food products in Taiwan tested with
Melamine

4.WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MELAMINE IS DIGESTED
´´
Melamine remains inside the kidney. It forms into stones
blocking the tubes. Pain will be eminent and person cannot urinate.
Kidney will then swell.

Although surgery can remove the stones, but it will cause
irreversible kidney damage.  It can lead to loss of kidney function
and will require
kidney dialysis or lead to death because of uremia.

What is dialysis In fact, it should be called "blood washing"
it is filtering all of the body's blood into the machine and then go
back to the body.

The whole process takes 4 hours and it is necessary to dialysis once
for every 3 days for the rest of your life

Here is a dialysis center

Large dialysis center

A small hole is required in the arm to insert the
sub-dialysis catheter.

Why is it more serious in babies.  Because the kidney is very
small and they drink a lot of milk powder.

Here is a baby undergoing dialysis.

China currenty has 13,000 infants hospitalized

It does not matter how much a human being took
Melamine. The important point is "It cannot be EATEN!"

5.What are the foods to be avoided?

Foods that contain dairy products should be avoided.

Remember: Foods with creamer or milk should
be avoided.

6.Which companies are affected

Hereunder are the companies affected with Melamine.

7.What do we do next?

Avoid the above foods for at least six months

If you have snack bar, restaurant or coffee shops
Stop selling dairy products for the meantime.

If you have infants at home, change to mother's milk
or find other substitutes.

Finally, share this information with friends so
they will understand the risk of milk poisoning

Transsexual men who 'feel' female are likely to have an unusual version of a gene that affects the male sex hormone testosterone, a study has shown.

The discovery was made by scientists who examined DNA from 112 male-to-female transsexuals.

Israeli singer Dana International: Recent research shows that transsexuals like Dana are likely to have an unusual version of a gene that affects the hormone testosterone

In many cases there was a longer version of a gene known to modify the action of testosterone.

The alteration may 'under-masculinise' the brain during its development in the womb, the researchers believe.

Study leader Dr Vincent Harley, from Prince Henry's Institute in Clayton, Australia, said:'There is a social stigma that transsexualism is simply a lifestyle choice; however, our findings support a biological basis of how gender identity develops.

'As with all genetic association studies it will be important to replicate these findings in other populations.'

The findings are published in the journal Biological Psychiatry.

Professor Andrew Sinclair, from the University of Melbourne, said: 'This research suggests that extra long copies of the Androgen Receptor gene potentially affect testosterone function in the brains of male-to-female transsexuals.

'These defective copies of the AR gene could severely reduce normal testosterone levels, resulting in a more female-like brain. Consequently, male-to-female transsexuals might be expected to have a more feminised brain and are therefore likely to display a female gender identity.

'This supports the notion that transsexualism has a biological (genetic) basis rather than being due to psychosocial factors in early childhood.

'However, this finding does not explain all male-to-female transsexuals suggesting that multiple genetic factors are involved.'

The tomatoes extend the lives of cancer-prone mice and could be on sale within three years. But not in Britain because of strict European rules about genetically modified food.
Purple 'super tomato' that can fight against cancer

By David Derbyshire
Last updated at 3:03 AM on 27th October 2008

It looks like a cross between an orange and a black pudding, but this genetically modified purple 'super tomato' could be the latest weapon in the fight against cancer.

The fruit, which tastes and smells like a normal red tomato, has been given two genes from a snapdragon flower that produce the dark colour.

The distinctive hue is created by antioxidant pigments that protect against diseases including cancer, heart problems and diabetes.

These plum-like tomatoes have been genetically engineered to fight cancer

British scientists behind the crop believe their purple tomato is the respectable face of genetic modification and could help convince the public of the benefits of GM food.

But critics say the potential health benefits are a distraction from the harmful environmental side effects of GM farming.

The tomato  -  developed by the John Innes Centre in Norwich  -  contains high concentrations of anthocyanins, pigments found in blackberries and cranberries.

Anthocyanins are chemicals called flavonoids which mop up potentially harmful oxygen molecules in the body. Although they are produced naturally by tomato plants, they are normally found only in the leaves.

The scientists transferred the genes from the snapdragons using specially adapted bacteria.

Food for thought: The tomatoes could be on sale within three years - but not in Britain

Professor Cathie Martin, who led the John Innes research  -  the results of which are published today in the journal Nature Biotechnology  -  said one tomato contained the same anthocyanins as a spoonful of cranberries.

'Most people do not eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day,' she said.

'But they can get more benefit from those they do eat if common fruit and vegetables can be developed that are higher in nutrients.'

The scientists found that mice bred to be vulnerable to cancer lived longer when fed the GM tomatoes. They now hope to test the effects on men at risk of prostate cancer.

But critics warn that genetic modification is tied in with factory farming methods that harm communities  -  and that any seeds from a GM tomato could produce unexpected effects on the environment.

Friends of the Earth said: 'GM crops cannot be deemed a "healthy" option

In love, two is company and three's a crowd. But in friendship, ten is the magic number.

Being able to count at least ten people as friends makes us happy, researchers say. But those with five or fewer are likely to be miserable with their lot, they claim.

Their study of hundreds of men and women also found that contented sorts tend to have lots of close friends and regularly make new ones.

Sociable: Happier people tend to have more close friends, as long as they don't divide themselves too thinly

While it is not clear whether our friends make us happy or we make friends because we are happy, the researchers say it is clear we should nourish our friendships.

Psychologist Richard Tunney said: 'Whatever the reason, actively working on friendships in the same way as to maintain a marriage is a prerequisite to happiness.'

Dr Tunney, of Nottingham University, quizzed more than 1,700 people about their satisfaction with their lives and the state of their friendships.

Those with five friends or fewer had just a 40 per cent chance of being happy. In other words, they were more likely to be unhappy than happy.

Ten was the first number at which people were more likely to be happy than unhappy. Happiest of the lot were those with dozens of friends, according to the study, which was carried out for the National Lottery.
For women, this meant having 33 friends; for men, the figure was 49.

Dr Tunney said: 'People who were extremely satisfied with their lives had twice the number of friends of people who were extremely dissatisfied.' Women tended to have fewer friends than men but formed tighter bonds.

Interestingly, the study found that childhood friends are no more likely to make us happy than people we become close to later in life.

Happiness by numbers: Those with five friends or fewer had just a 40 per cent chance of being happy
Lottery winners, however, had a different take on life. They tended to be happier than others despite spending their time with a small circle of old friends.

This could be because they trust those they've known for longest. Alternatively, financial security may allow them to lavish more time and attention on those who matter the most to them.

I pray to this brave wife, mother and a politician . She endured so long, exposing the kids to the volatile temper of her husband. Best wishes to her.

Gener,
My tears flowed as I read your posting, you are brave and ... at the same time.
In my opinion it is a lot wiser to just be silent about the whole situation. I have lots of friends that the partner confessed everything and there goes the whole mess. The agrieved party might forgive and forget but the fear and insecurity is there. Kon matago, i tago nalang.  Go to confessions and start a new life. There is always hope in a new day.
God bless to you and your family Gener,  Manay Tess

Magnesium sulphate is not easy to buy in Germany!
This illness is avoidable. So it is wise to eat the proper foods and drink plenty of fluids ( try water therapy).

Green fingers: Gardening is one of five activities that can make people feel better about themselves

Simple tasks such as playing a musical instrument, gardening and mending a bicycle every day could protect your mental health.

Scientists say the "five-a-day" activities can improve mental wellbeing in the same way eating five fruits or vegetables daily helps the body stay healthy.

People should try to be active, connect with others, take notice of their surroundings and keep learning.

The report by the Government thinktank Foresight was compiled by 400 international scientists who specialise in disciplines that vary from neuroscience to economics.

Felicia Huppert, professor of psychology at the University of Cambridge, who led part of the project, said: 'We found there are five categories of things that can make a profound difference to people's wellbeing. Each has evidence behind it.

'These actions are so simple that everyone should aim to do them daily, just as they are encouraged to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables.'

The five categories are: Connect with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours; be active with sports and hobbies such as gardening or dancing or just a daily stroll; be curious, noting the beauty of everyday moments as well as the unusual; learn something, for example fixing a bike or playing an instrument; and finally, giving to others you meet around you.

'The report has shown that if an individual is fulfilled in their work this positively affects wellbeing, this in turn will see reduced expenditure on the treatment of mental health problems.'

I know that the procedure of granting a project ( house)  as part of the Gawad Kalinga is very strict. This can be an intrigue since the Couples for Christ the prime mover of this campaign had splitted. Besides the house has  a humble flooring only of 20-25 sq meters.

We got lots of nutritious vegetables like kamunggay, ganas or kamote tops, kang-kong, saluyot, bago.
A Bol-anon discovered that drinking boiled water from kamote tops has an excellent effect to cure dengue!

Provoking ang pangutana nga worth emulating. Syempre lain ang values nga iyang nadak-an kay sa karon. Why she said it a hassle? Perhaps she got priorities in life, so she chooses single blessedness ( kalar-es diay). She is happy that way. If there is a campaign with an all support of the government this will be a success. The bamboo planters let  the bamboo shoots  sold as edible food which is a source of income, this is a short-sighted business.

The NuVal system, also known as the Overall Nutritional Quality Index, has already been adopted by three supermarket chains in the U.S.

It uses a series of equations to crunch the nutritional value of each food. Factors taken into account include the protein, fat, sugar, vitamin, fibre and calorie content, as well as salt and cholesterol levels.

A food's link to health problems is also taken into account when calculating its overall score.

In general, fruits and vegetables score the most highly, as they are high in nutrients but low in calories.

Salt and fat-laden junk foods fare the worst. Oranges, which score a round 100, rate slightly more highly than apples which still manage a highly respectable 96.

Radishes, cabbage, tomatoes, clementines, watermelon, mangoes, red onions, figs, grapes and bananas are also near the top.

Here in Germany especially in North Rhine Wesphalia, third graders (elementary) are taught about the human body and sexual parts. The parents are always consulted to have their kids well informed about this matter, to prevent teen age pregnancy and sexual transmitted diseases.
#9775
It should also be not forgotten that aside from the mental anguish and hurt pride, there is a great danger of sexually transmitted diseases to the innocent partner.

Dear Indayon,
I understand your predicament. But if you want some truth to be exposed you have to have lots of guts and nerves.  This profession is very, very precarious especially in our country , where some persons tends to liquidate journalists who have the courage to expose delicate matters. So you make a choice.

No sex is secret to long life, says 105-year-old Clara, Britain's oldest virginBy Luke Salkeld
Last updated at 1:50 AM on 10th October 2008

Just too busy: Clara Meadmore says sex seemed a 'hassle' and she's glad she did without it
Over the years many a centenarian has delivered their secret for a long life.

Not smoking, daily exercise, moderate drinking, being married (and sometimes not being married) have all had their champions.
But, at the ripe old age of 105, Clara Meadmore could trump the lot: a life of celibacy.

Miss Meadmore says she has always been too busy for relationships and thought of physical intimacy as a 'hassle'.

The former secretary, who will celebrate her birthday tomorrow, said she had no regrets about remaining a virgin and had turned down several marriage proposals.
Miss Meadmore said: 'People have asked whether I am a homosexual and the answer is no. I have just never been interested in or fancied having sex.
'I imagine there is a lot of hassle involved and I have always been busy doing other things. I've never had a boyfriend - I've never been bothered about relationships.'
She added: 'When I was a girl you only had sex with your husband - and I never married.
'I've always had lots of platonic friendships with men but never felt the need to go further than that or marry.
'Everything seems so fast these days. I don't know a lot about young people or the way they do things. I'm sure it's very different. I made my mind up at the age of 12 never to marry and I've not gone back on that.'
Miss Meadmore was born in Glasgow in 1903, two years after the death of Queen Victoria. She remembers hearing about the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and the outbreak of the First World War.

Yes of course, we are the brown americans possessing american affinity.  We are almost losing our Filipino identity because of this.  Our economy is patterned to the USA and most of our academes and politicians are US educated.

The pain is beyond words to describe especially with kids and how to hide the hatred, without them hating the father. This conflict  was really difficult to resolve rationally, I   nearly lost  my sanity. It took me 6 years to come to terms with the situation, and now we are good friends.

Evonik STEAG in Villanueva, Cagayan de Oro City Mindanao has a coal-fired power plant that coveres 55 hectares of land and offers 210 kw power supply. This is in operation since 2 years.

According to Claus Peter Bell, Executive vice-president of Evonik/STEAG GmbH, they were able to built new housing units for more than 35 families who first squatted in the are of the  company. Since the families are growing they also built kindergarten, elementary schools and some income earning schemes for women like card making out of local materials like grass and banana fibers. They also assigned foresters to work on a 1,200 hectare land as their contribution to green the environment. Take note that this huge energy company did not relate to the listeners how the waste of this power plant will be disposed including ashes and the rest. Time was running out during his talk and I was not able to open this question. Sayang. Hope  some Bol-anons living in Villanueva or Tagoloan Cagayan de Oro City be aware and should work with the local Greenpeace representatives since the negative effect takes a long time and could be irreversible.

It was a big event poorly attended by our Kababayans. It was  a good venue to know what is happening in our country and the government´s initiatives to allow foreign investments. It was an excellent moment for me to voice my critical opinion on the sagging economy and the fear that future investments doesn´t really comes to the needy, ha ha ha.
