Boston got past an old nemesis to set up a matchup with another rival. Paul Pierce scored 27 points, Ray Allen had 17 and Kevin Garnett added 16 to lift the Celtics to an 89-81 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals. Boston, which locked up with Detroit many times in the 1980s, will now rekindle another classic series in the NBA finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. "It's kind of surreal," Garnett said.

MANILA, Philippines - A day after the bloody hostage crisis in Pampanga, the bus firm whose unit was involved in the incident sought police assistance to tighten security for passengers.

Radio dzBB reported Friday that Genesis Transport asked the Philippine National Police (PNP) to help guard its terminals in Cubao in Quezon City, and in Pasay City.

The bus firm also banned drivers and conductors from accommodating extra passengers during the trip, saying all passengers must board the bus at the terminal.

Before he was killed, a hostage-taker watches over his three remaining hostages during negotiations for their release in Lubao, Pampanga, Thursday.

Genesis particularly asked the PNP to help inspect passengers and baggage, checking for banned items such as firearms and knives. It noted the hostage taker, Rey Digo, was armed with a revolver and a knife when he took bus passengers hostage Thursday.

Digo had boarded the bus along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA).

On the other hand, it asked the association of provincial bus operators to formally request the PNP to set up checkpoints along bus routes to flush out troublemakers, including hostage takers.

It also promised to shoulder hospitalization costs for the injured passengers, and burial expenses for the passenger who died. - GMANews.TV

Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers dispatched the defending champions, and now they're headed to the NBA finals for the first time in four years. Bryant scored 17 of his 39 points in the fourth quarter, and the Lakers rallied from an early 17-point deficit to beat the San Antonio Spurs 100-92 on Thursday night and win the Western Conference finals in five games. The Lakers are 12-3 in the playoffs, including 8-0 at Staples Center, where they haven't lost in two months.

Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers are one win away from returning to the NBA finals. Bryant had 28 points and 10 rebounds and the Lakers beat the San Antonio Spurs 93-91 on Tuesday night to take a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference finals. It was the Spurs' first home loss this postseason, and the defending champions face elimination when Game 5 is played in Los Angeles on Thursday. Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 29 points and 17 rebounds.

As we approach the midway point of the 2008 NBA Conference finals, the good news is both series are still up for grabs.

No offense to what the New Orleans Hornets accomplished this season, finishing with the second seed in the West, but there is no doubt the top four teams have made it to the dance and there are four very different possible combinations for the Finals, with each of them interesting in their own right.

Sure, the Los Angeles Lakers jumped out to a 2-1 lead on the defending champion San Antonio Spurs, but is anybody crazy enough to rule out the Spurs â€" winners of three of the last five titles? But the Spurs surely need to win Game 4 or the Lakers go home for Game 5 with a chance to clinch.

And yes, the Boston Celtics finally won on the road after a record-tying six straight losses until Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills, taking a 2-1 lead over the Detroit Pistons. But you all know the Pistons ... bad game, good game, bad game, good game. And it held suit, with Detroit taking Game 4 from the Celtics to even the series at 2-2.

So that sets all the utensils out on the table, with four possible combinations for the Finals. If majority rules, the Celtics and Lakers will meet, rekindling a historic Finals rivalry that has occurred nine times, dating back to 1959, when the Lakers still played in Minneapolis. And let's not forget the Lakers' Phil Jackson, he of nine NBA titles as coach (six in Chicago and three in L.A.), in a tie with Celtics legend Red Auerbach for the most rings in coaching history. One thing to consider is Jackson's teams have never lost a playoff series (40-0) when they win Game 1, as they did against the Spurs. With MVP Kobe Bryant leading the way and the home court, they are favored.

But that's not a guarantee.

The Spurs have the opportunity to win their fourth title in six years, something that nobody has done since the Celtics had their spectacular run of 11 titles in 13 years from 1957-69 . There is no trio in the league that has won as consistently as Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. You can knock them down, but knocking them out is an entirely different circumstance.

The Celtics triumvirate of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen has had more than their share of success during their respective careers. And during the regular season, they put together the best record in the NBA. It's different now, though, considering this is the first season the three All-Stars have played together on the Celtics.

Meanwhile, the hard-to-figure Pistons have shown the ability to come back in any series and have been to the Conference finals six years in a row, so they have the experience to bounce back against the Celtics. It's just always hard to figure what we will see from the Pistons, who have greatness but too often inexplicably lapse into a lifeless bunch during select games in the postseason.

So as we consider all of the above, let's look at the matchups to decide which one we'd like to see going forward:

MANILA, Philippines - A Filipina worker in Saudi Arabia was held hostage, raped and videotaped by her employer and his friends, a Philippine legislator revealed Tuesday.

In a statement from Sen. Loren Legarda’s office, the Filipina woman reportedly managed to give her husband a call to inform him of the incident.

According to the information given to Legarda, the Filipina was raped by her employer and four of his friends. One even videotaped the act.

Legarda’s office refused to name the Filipina but said the victim was an Ifugao from the Quirino province.

The Filipina's relatives asked assistance from the Philippine Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Antonio Villamor in a letter dated May 21, but Legarda said that the ambassador has yet to give a reply.

"The OFW is virtually living like prisoner in her employer's house in Qatif in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, quoting a report from militant workers group Migrante International," read the statement sent to GMANews.TV.

Another Filipina, 43-year-old Fatima Maulana, was earlier reported to have been raped and killed in Kuwait earlier this month.

A domestic helper who has worked in Kuwait since 2002, Maulana was murdered last May 9 after a police report indicated that she failed to return to her employer’s house after taking a day off on May 6. Her decomposing body was found ten days later.

According to Medion, a Kuwaiti national named Mohammed Yassin Al-Mutairi, believed to be involved in Maulana’s case, was arrested.

In a resolution, Legarda urged the Senate Committee on labor, employment to conduct a full probe of both cases.

"Despite being unsung heroes, our OFWs have, ironically, not received the due protection they need from the government to secure their safety and welfare in countries where they work," she said in the resolution. -Mark Joseph Ubalde, GMANews.TV

MANILA, Philippines - A Filipino receptionist who got fed up with an irate visitor at a private hospital in Saudi Arabia displayed her karate skills, online news site Arab News reported Sunday.

The report cited sketchy details indicating the receptionist and the visitor had a confrontation after the Filipino could no longer stand the visitor's complaining.

Police broke up the "fight" and brought the two to the local police station, where the two "made amends."

The report did not name the Filipino involved in the incident. - GMANews.TV

Kevin Garnett led the Boston Celtics to their first win on the road in the playoffs. He had plenty of help. Garnett scored 22 points and was one of six players to make the Celtics' first six baskets, helping them build the first of many big leads en route to a 94-80 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night and a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. The NBA's top-seeded team had lost its first six road games - tying a league record - and was 9-0 at home until losing Detroit in the previous game.

THERE was an unbelievably touching episode when Manny Pacquiao visited Chicago for a get-together with the media and a Pep Rally at the Federal Plaza in downtown Chicago, alongside World Boxing Council lightweight champion David Diaz on Wednesday.

One of Pacquiao’s ardent fans, who somehow made it to the event, was 78-year-old Filipino Placido Dosdos, who had undergone chemotherapy, radiation and surgery for colon cancer. Dosdos was formerly a Customs appraiser/examiner at the Mactan Airport in Cebu and has lived in Chicago for the past 15 years.

An e-mail from Gigi Dosdos-Jardine, the cancer patient’s daughter sent to Viva Sports special correspondent Romy Sajer, a former news anchor/reporter of NBN, wrote her father was homebound after weeks in the hospital on a wheelchair, but was determined to see Pacquiao.

“He was able to walk with a cane, ride a blue line with his daughter and waited for one hour to get a glimpse of his no.1 idol Manny Pacquiao,” reported Sajer.

Gigi wrote her father was “proud of Manny representing the Philippines. He waited more than an hour to see his idol in cold weather despite a runny nose and feeling floaty from his condition, but this motivated him to get out of the house to see his idol.”

She concluded her e-mail in caps: “MANNY P. CURED MY DAD. HE IS BACK TO HIS NORMAL SELF NOW.”

Gigi thanked Sajer for talking to her father and listening to her story. She said she was a fan of Philippine Weekly, a community newspaper in Chicago. Ronnie Nathanielsz

VISITING Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej got a taste of the Philippine wet market yesterday when he visited the Guadalupe public market in Makati City, where he bought vegetables and meat to cook for Thai Embassy staff in Manila.

Taking a break from his two-day visit here, Samak went around the market accompanied by Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, where he checked out rice prices and bought P1,000 worth of tenderloin, brocolli, chicken and shrimp.

“Just like home,” the Thai premier, wearing a barong-like long-sleeved shirt, was heard saying as vendors, market goers and plain kibitzers gawked at him.

Barely speaking to reporters, Samak told Yap that the prices at the Guadalupe market were very much like those in Thailand.

“He seemed surprised and happy that prices were all the same, including rice,” Yap told reporters.

He said Samak’s observation indicated that the prices of goods here, including rice, remained stable despite the perceived rice crisis.

Samak has pledged to export rice to the Philippines to help it cope with a rice shortage.

He said Thailand, the world’s top rice exporter, was more than willing to supply rice to the Philippines at negotiable rates.

“The prime minister just said that in the event that the Philippines should need more rice, Thailand would be more than open to supply,” Yap said.

Meanwhile, the Philippines and Thailand have agreed to urge other members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to adopt a single-visa policy to boost tourism in the region.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said that deal was firmed up at a meeting Thursday between Samak and President Arroyo.

Samak “was very upbeat about tourism,” Ermita said.

“He said that maybe we could agree among Asean, starting with the Philippines-Thailand agreement, [to do away with the] necessity of having a visa for tourists coming in and out of Thailand and vice versa.” Ferdinand Fabella

Philippine Daily Inquirer, INQUIRER.net

Close this MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE 3) Police are more inclined to believe the burning of three buses of a transport firm in Cubao, Quezon City, late Wednesday was the handiwork of a group of dismissed employees.

TORCHED. A Victory Liner bus set on fire by still unidentified persons at the firm's terminal in Cubao, Quezon City late Wednesday night.

But the military said the New People’s Army (NPA) is the most likely culprit in the attack on the Victory Liner terminal at the corner of New York and Denver Streets, an angle officials of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) doubt.

Superintendent Asprinio Cabula, QCPD Station 10 commander, on Thursday noted that the 10 armed men who broke into the facility and disarmed the lone watchman did not mention the word "NPA" (New People's Army).

"The men said they were 'taong labas [outsiders].' But they did not tell the security guard that they were NPA," Cabula told the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net).

"It is more likely that this is labor-related," he added.

But Armed Forces spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Ernesto Torres Jr. said the attackers’ identifying themselves "taong labas" and accusing the bus firm of not giving them "kung ano gusto namin [what we want]," only bolstered suspicions rebels were responsible for the attack.

Reports on the incident quoted the attackers as saying: "Matagal na kaming galit sa Victory Liner dahil hindi binibigay ang gusto namin [We have been angry at Victory Liner for a long time because they don't give us what we want]."

Torres explained that "taong labas" was a term often used to describe the NPA, while "gusto namin" could be a reference to rebel extortion activities or the collection of so-called "revolutionary taxes."

"Judging from those pronouncements, there is a possibility. Because as they [suspects] claimed they were 'taong labas' and we know for a fact that [that word] is used by the New People's Army," Torres told reporters in Camp Aguinaldo.

Torres said the military is helping the police investigate the incident.

Cabula said they have requested the bus firm's management to give them a copy of the personal data of drivers and conductors who were laid off from their jobs because of various offenses.

He said they received information that the former employees warned the bus company's executives that something would happen to them if they refused the sacked workers’ demands regarding financial benefits.

Cabula, however, said they are not discounting that a group of extortionists could be behind the incident.

According to Cabula, the attackers, armed with handguns, barged into the parking lot at around 11:15 p.m. and disarmed security guard Alex Ranola.

The assailants then herded three other employees of the bus firm to a corner of the garage before they doused kerosene and lacquer thinner onto a bus and set it on fire. Two other buses were partly damaged before firefighters were able to put out the fire around 12:59 a.m. Thursday.

The attackers left on an AUV without license plates.

Torres said he could not immediately recall if communist rebels had struck in the capital in the past.

Asked if the attack, if proven the NPA was behind it, indicated growing rebel strength, Torres said: "We can never tell. We are looking at all possibilities. We don't want to jump into that assessment."

“Slowly he is improving…getting better each day. Although siyempre hindi naman gano’n kadali ang lahat ng mga bagay kasi nagkaroon ng complication si Rudy," paliwanag ni Lorna.

Sports and Fitness / PACQUIAO JETS TO CHICAGO
May 21, 2008, 08:54:24 PM

Wed, 21 May 2008

CHICAGO, IL, (May 20, 2008) Boxing superstar MANNY PACQUIAO jets to Chicago, Illinois, on Tuesday night in preparation for a full media day on Wednesday, May 21st which includes a Public Pep Rally at 12Noon at Federal Plaza, 230 S. Dearborn (corner of Adams and Dearborn) to promote his showdown with World Boxing Council champion DAVID DIAZ set for June 28th at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"I am looking forward to my first visit to The Windy City and meeting Chicago's great boxing fans -- both Hispanic and Filipino," said Manny Pacquiao. "Chicago has a lot to be proud of in its world champion David Diaz. I just hope Chicago doesn't think of me as an ill-mannered guest when I go after David and his title with everything I have on June 28th."

When two explosive world champions at the top of their game mix it up for the world title, it’s a “Lethal Combination!” Newly-crowned World Boxing Council (WBC) super featherweight champion MANNY PACQUIAO and WBC lightweight champion DAVID DIAZ will battle in a 12-round rumble with Diaz’s title at stake.

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with MP Promotions, Pacquiao vs. Diaz will take place Saturday, June 28, at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. PDT.

Remaining tickets for Pacquiao vs.Diaz, priced at $600, $400, $300, $200 and $100, can be purchased at the Mandalay Bay box office and at all Las Vegas Ticketmaster locations (select Smith’s Food and Drug Centers, Macy’s West at the Fashion Show Mall, and Ritmo Latino). Ticket sales are limited to eight (8) per person. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (702) 474-4000 or Mandalay Bay (702) 632-7580. Tickets are also available for purchase at www.mandalaybay.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

“This will be my hardest-fought battle,” said Pacquiao. “It’s been over three years since I have changed weight divisions and I will be doing it against the lightweight division’s world champion. I saw how he took the fight to Erik Morales in his last title defense and I’m expecting to see the same firepower out of him when we meet. But this is my drive for five. Five world titles in five different weight classes and I will not be denied. I am fighting for history, for destiny and for my people of the Philippines.”

"Manny Pacquiao has beaten many great fighters, especially Mexicans like Morales, Barrera, Marquez, Larios and Solis. That's why they call him “The Mexicutioner,” said Diaz. “I will shock the world and beat Pacquiao at his own game, power for power. He’s a great champion but he’s fighting in my division â€" lightweight. I have worked too hard for this world title and I will not give it up to him."

“Two world champions, at the top of their game, matching each other in speed, power, stamina and courage is a recipe for a great fight,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “Manny has never felt the power thrown at this weight class just as Diaz has never gone toe-to-toe with such a human dynamo. But Manny possesses an inner strength from his fellow countrymen the likes I have never seen as a promoter with over 40 years of experience.

Manny is more than a national treasure to the Philippines, he is the very symbol of its national pride. He doesn’t fight for himself, he fights for his people. It’s a responsibility that no other athlete could, or attempt to, accomplish.”

“Boxing fans recognize that in Pacquiao vs. Diaz you have one of the sport’s best fighters and biggest attractions moving up in weight to challenge a bigger, stronger champion,” said HBOPPV’s Mark Taffet. “It’s a very intriguing proposition and we look forward to the event."

Dubbed "Republica Enemy No. 1," Pacquiao (46-3-2, 34 KOs), from General Santos City, Philippines, has blitzed through the best fighters Mexico has had to offer since 2003 including Erik Morales (KO 3, TKO 10), Marco Antonio Barrera (TKO 11, W 12), Juan Manuel Marquez (W 12, D 12), Oscar Larios (W 12), Emanuel Lucero (TKO 3), Hector Velazquez (TKO 6) and Jorge Solis (KO 8). Pacquiao was named 2006 Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring magazine for his two spectacular knockout victories of Mexican icon and three-division champion Morales, as well as his dominating 12-round unanimous decision over former world champion Larios. The hard-hitting southpaw has won 22 of his last 23 bouts including 2007 victories over Barrera and Solis. Pacquiao’s 12-round split decision victory over Marquez earlier this year not only avenged a disputed draw from their 2004 battle, it also made Pacman a four-division world champion.

Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KOs), from Chicago, will be making the second defense of his title. He successfully defended it against the three-division world champion Morales last summer winning a hard-fought unanimous decision over the future Hall of Famer. Although behind on the scorecards early, Diaz remained cool and rallied before the raucous hometown Chicago crowd of 10,000 to capture the decision. He swept the championship rounds and won the decision by scores of 114-113, 115-113 and 115-112. With the victory, Diaz cemented his place among the best lightweights in the sport and one of the most popular and respected athletes in the sports-crazy town of Chicago. A member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, Diaz, with 12 years of experience as a professional, is more than prepared to handle the pressures that come with battling boxing’s pound-for-pound most exciting fighter.

The Pacquiao vs. Diaz pay-per-view telecast beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, has a suggested retail price of $49.95, will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to 71 million pay-per-view homes. The telecast will be available in HD-TV for those viewers who can receive HD. HBO Pay-Per-View is the leading supplier of event programming to the pay-per-view industry. PRESIDENT Arroyo yesterday led the capsule-laying of the P4 billion Bohol-Panglao International Airport (BPIA), which is envisioned to be the center of business and commerce in the Central Visayas.

Arroyo flew by helicopter from Cebu and landed at the spot where the future runway would be located.

In her brief speech, Arroyo said the airport would be a magnet that would attract development projects.

"We would see to it that Bohol would be the center of tourism in Central Visayas and strive to make the Chocolate Hills one of the Seven Wonders of the World," she said in Cebuano, to the delight of the crowd.

Alfonso Cusi, general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), said the airport would be finished by 2010.

MIAA provided P3 billion of the capital, while the Transportation and Communications Department shouldered P1 billion.

"This is a major infrastructure development that we will achieve without the need for foreign loan," Cusi said.

He said the P3 billion came from the Philippine Airlines as payment for its P3 billion back accounts on aeronautical fees.

Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza said that the Panglao airport would be the center of export processing zones like the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

Panglao Island is 10,000 hectares in area, bigger than Mactan's 7,000 hectares.

Bohol Gov. Erico Aumentado said that at present, Bohol counts on tourists from Korean, Japan, China and Taiwan.

Cusi said MIAA, being a major source of the capital, has the options to securitize its investments by selling to potential investors the airport's surrounding real estate and various projects on the line, which was done with the upgraded airports in Davao and Iloilo.

Mendoza said the government's next project is an "aeronautical highway" that would connect major tourist spots and potential business hubs.

The "aeronautical highway" is targeted for completion in 2009, Mendoza said.

Mendoza's plan is the answer to the call of foreign businessmen to provide airports which could be directly accessed by foreign air carriers.

Travel agencies were reported to have avoided the Philippines and concentrated on Thailand and Bali in Indonesia, and other countries in the Asean region where air carriers could directly deliver their tourists, avoiding the hassle of airport transfers.

Aside from Panglao and the airports in Palawan as part of the aeronautical highway, Mendoza said other airports scheduled to be upgraded are those in San Vicente, Palawan; Laguindingan, Cagayan de Oro; San Fernando, La Union; Alaminos, Pangasinan; Siargao island, Butuan, Zamboanga and Jolo. - Jay Chua

Manny Pacquiao may be a huge favorite as he moves up in weight and challenges WBC lightweight champion David Diaz, but everyone involved in the June 28 bout tried their hardest to convince fans that the fight is no mismatch.

Top Rank promotions head man Bob Arum, who promotes both Diaz and Pacquiao, got things rolling with heavy praise for the underdog champion Diaz.

Read more at...For additional info on boxing, MMA and more, check out InsideFighting.com.
"When I first saw Olympic footage of him, I said this kid reminds me of Jake LaMotta because it's the same type of style," Arum said. "This kid keeps coming and coming and throwing punches and not getting discouraged and hanging in there. So what you are going to see on June 28 is a fight."

Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach agreed, and got some jabs in at his own fighter for arriving to yet another training camp later than hoped due to his inordinately hectic schedule back home in the Philippines where he is a cultural icon. The big money may be going towards Pacquiao, but the astute coach believes the former Olympian and current champion Diaz poses plenty of challenges.

"Everyone is telling me that this is going to be an easy fight," Roach said. "That's the worse thing in the world to say to me because this is not an easy fight.

"People don't go to the Olympics and become world champions by accident. [Diaz] has worked hard for what he's achieved. He's a very good fighter, a very good opponent for us. It will be the first time we are fighting a southpaw since me and Manny have been together. There's some adjustments we need to make and that's why Manny is on time for training camp, so that's a good sign."

Diaz' trainer Jim Strickland took to the podium next and shared some underdog making good stories to emphasize he and Diaz' confidence that they would keep their title.

Arum, of course, has a fight to promote and it's understandable that Roach would want to talk up Diaz in order to keep his fighter motivated and that Strickland would assure Diaz that he has a good chance at winning. But both fighters, beginning with Pacquiao, seemed similarly certain of an exciting and competitive engagement.

"This fight is going to be a great fight because the style of Diaz is very accurate to my style and I know he's doing his best to win this fight," Pacquiao said. "I will try my best to win this fight too."

Pacquiao's previous fight was a split decision win over Juan Manuel Marquez in March and has beaten Erik Morales twice. Diaz' first title defense was a decision win over Morales in 2007.

Diaz was not coy in admitting that the fight against Pacquiao would be his most significant and difficult. But the Chicagoan described the challenge as a welcome and necessary one to building a legacy and proving his mettle to himself.

"My fight with Manny Pacquiao is the biggest fight of my career, the toughest fight of my career. It's a fight that every fighter should want to have and every fighter needs so he can prove to himself that he belongs with the best. And Manny Pacquiao is one of the best fighters, pound for pound, right now so to step in the ring with him is an honor and a test for me to prove to myself. Because I know a lot of writers out there don't really believe in me so I know I have to believe in myself to be victorious. If I do that, train hard and do all the right things, things will come out good in the end," Diaz said.

Diaz agreed with his opponent that their respective styles should make for good action. He also had an advance apology for all his doubters and the good people of the Philippine islands.

"[Pacquiao] was right, our styles are similar and we are going to go at it," he said. "Neither one of us is going to back off so there's going to be a lot of fireworks. You guys are going to get a little demonstration of what July 4 is going to be like on June 28...We plan on keeping the WBC lightweight championship. I'm sorry to tell you guys that. Especially to the Filipino people, I'm sorry. I just can't allow that. That's just in me. I don't want to lose. I'm going to pray that I don't lose, I'm going to work out so I don't lose. I'm going to run, eat, train and think about Manny Pacquiao from now on."

In closing his comments, Diaz said he wants what should be his most lucrative fight to date to go down as a classic with fans, and he wouldn't mind a few more rematches after that.

"I want this fight to be one that people talk about way afterwards," Diaz said.

"Like two, three years later I want people to say, 'Man, Diaz/Pacquiao was a great fight. So was two and three and four and five.'"

EIGHT people were killed while six others were hurt after a man went on a shooting rampage in a remote barangay in Calamba City, Laguna shortly past midnight Monday.

Strafed with M-16. Sonny Marudo, a relative of the victims, looks at a bloodstained bed mattress.

The gunman, Bernabe Limbaga Fiesta, 29, of Kidapawan City in North Cotabato, is at large, said Chief Supt. Ricardo Padilla, Southern Tagalog police chief.

Padilla said Fiesta worked as caretaker of a farm in barangay Hornalan owned by Florencio Peria, a retired master sergeant of the now defunct Philippine Constabulary.

Padilla, quoting witnesses, said Fiesta had complained about being mocked by some residents in the barangay.

Using an M-16 rifle, Fiesta opened fire at a row of residential houses in the barangay at around 12:15 a.m., hitting four houses.

Fiesta was seen by witnesses also shooting a dog, a cow, and a parked vehicle during his escape.

As he was fleeing, Fiesta also aimed the Armalite at a neighbor to whom he said other neighbors have been making fun of him. But he spared the neighbor after seeing angry residents running after him.

Fiesta would have gotten away unidentified but police responders found at the crime scene three magazines for the M-16 rifle. The magazines had engravings that said "Peria PC."

Police then raided Peria's house but did not find the Armalite.

Peria told police that his bandolier with eight magazines was also missing.

Killed in the shooting were Dennis Balisong, 29, and his children Gladys, 8, and Gladyn, 7; Gerry Pili, 49, and his wife Gloria, 39, and their children Mary Jane, 12, Sarah, 9, and Julian, 4.

Injured were Marina Balisong and Demark Balisong, Aurelio Abanilla, Vicente Redondo, Cherry May Pili, and eight-year-old Erika Pili.

Padilla said they are considering the relief of Senior Supt. Felipe Rojas, the Laguna police chief, after two massacres in a span of three days.

Last Friday, robbers killed 10 people inside the Rizal Commercial Bank Corp. bank in Cabuyao.

SUNDAY MAY 18, 2008 | PHILIPPINES

NINE mutiny leaders granted pardon by President Arroyo were released yesterday by the Army on the order of a Makati court that handled their coup d’état case.

The nine signed a "Joint Acceptance of Conditional Pardon" before their release, according to Army spokesman Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner.

The conditions for the pardon are permanent and perpetual disqualification from military service and that "each shall not commit any crime or felony or participate in a coup d’état or other forms of military adventurism," according to General Order No. 10 dated May 12.

The President, who announced the grant of pardon on the same day, said the sentence imposed on them by a Makati court "shall again be in full force and effect" if the officers violate any of the conditions.

Captains Gerardo Gambala and Milo Maestrecampo, two core leaders of the July 2003 Oakwood mutiny, had been sentenced by the Makati court to life imprisonment.

Sentenced to six to 12 years in jail were Captains Albert Baloloy, John Andres, Laurence Luis Somera and Alvin Ebreo, and 1st Lt. Florentino Somera and Cleo Dongga-As and 2Lt. Kristopher Bryan Yasay.

The nine appealed for pardon after their sentences were handed down last month following a change of plea to guilty.

Brawner said the officers underwent medical and physical check-up before they were released from the Army’s Custodial Management Unit in Fort Bonifacio at around 11:30 a.m.

Army chief Lt. Gen. Victor Ibrado said he intends to see the officers when they have "settled down."

"They served as my cadets, I trained them so I want to talk to them… they can come to me anytime. We’ll talk and I will also ask them how I could be of help to them," said Ibrado, who assumed the Army’s top post Wednesday.

PRESIDENT Arroyo yesterday voted for three Philippine entries to the New Seven Wonders of Nature, plus four other rivals that she said she could not remember.

Arroyo’s spur-of-the-moment vote took place while she was inspecting the library hub of the education department in Pasig City.

Arroyo was testing an internet-ready computer in the facility when she decided to vote for the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

But it was not easy for her, because she was not a registered member of the site. And she forgot her email address, which was required to vote. Her security aide whispered her email address to her while she typed.

Once she was in, she picked the three Philippine entries that are already in the Top 77 â€" Tubbataha Reef in Palawan, Chocolate Hills in Bohol, and the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park in Palawan.

She tried to vote for Mayon volcano but it was not a "candidate."

She clicked the other nominees to meet the required entry of seven nominees per vote.

When asked later what other sites she voted for, she said she could not remember because she just clicked at random in order to submit the required number of nominees. She was reportedly in a hurry to leave.

Tubbataha Reef currently ranks No. 8, Chocolate Hills No. 9, and the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park No. 16.

Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said the library hub would benefit the schools in Pasig and San Juan cities that do not have any library of their own.

Thirty-five library hubs would be set up all over the country with the help of the private sector.

Lapus said not all of the 43,000 schools nationwide could have their own libraries but this should not hinder the country’s goal of making every child a reader.

CABUYAO, Laguna--as though they were compelled to queue for their doom, three of the bodies were found side by side in a common pool of blood.

Two others were in the vault, lying among scattered peso bills. The rest lay in front of the counter, between office dividers--most with a single shot in the head.

Before taking off with an undetermined amount, yet unidentified robbers went on a killing spree early Fridayat the one-story branch of Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) in this town of industrial parks.

Officials said it was the worst crime in Laguna in recent memory.

"They were executed," Edwin Ermita, vice president for corporate services of the Yuchengco Group, RCBC's mother company, said of those killed--branch manager Roberto Panganiban Castro, tellers Bayani Nicdao and Olga Gonzalez, operations assistant Noel Miranda, new accounts officer Teresa Umayam, cashier service head Bernardo Lapaan Jr., janitor Juan Leyva, security guard Baltazar Aguilando and a depositor's representative Ferdinand Antonio.

"Three were found dead as if they were told to line up; they were shot pointblank," Senior Supt. Felipe Rojas Jr., the Laguna police director, told the Philippine Dailiy Inquirer.

Marketing manager Isagani Pastor was found in critical condition, and was taken to hospital.

The provincial government is offering a reward of P100,000 to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of the "horrific" crime, said Laguna Gov. Teresita "Ningning" Lazaro.

In Manila, Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla offered another P100,000.

"All [the tipster] has to do is coordinate with the Philippine National Police. I hope this will speed up the solving of the case," Revilla said.

No sign of forced entry

Police recovered a gray Nissan van owned by a slain employee at Barangay Turbina, Calamba City. Rojas said the van was used as a getaway vehicle.

Rojas said what happened could have been an "inside job."

He said six to seven gunmen must have been involved, gaining access through the back door. He expressed the belief that "somebody from the inside must have opened it for them."

Benito Cupino, detachment commander of the Laguna Industrial Park Police Action Group (Lippag), also said the robbers took the back door and might have waited for the bank employees to arrive.

He said there was no sign of forced entry, and raised the possibility that the victims knew the robbers because all of them were deliberately killed.

Pulo Barangay Captain Odilon Caparas also said he believed the robbers had a connection with one of the employees.

"The robbers know where to enter," he said, adding that no one had heard the shots.

Cupino said the vault had been forcibly opened, and police found peso bills scattered on the floor.

Police and bank officials have yet to disclose how much was stolen, but Rojas said it must be much more than the P300,000 and $3,000 that police found left in the vault.

Joel dela Cruz, a security guard who was supposed to have replaced Aguilando in the morning, is still missing. Regidor Sapon, another security guard, reported to the police after hearing of what had happened.

Body on the floor

Clients alerted police upon seeing a body on the floor when they peeked through the locked glass door, Rojas said.

Police moved in soon afterward, between 9:15 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., and broke through the door to gain entry.

They found 9-mm, 38-cal. and 45-cal. shells, along with coins, bloodied cash bags and bills, scattered on the floor. (The recovered cash in bloodstained bags was later seen being carried out to an armored van.)

According to the Yuchengco Group's Ermita, crime investigators processed the scene for close to five hours.

Bloody shoe prints marked the floor as police and bank officers came in and out to collect evidence.

"There are similar incidents in Metro Manila but the difference here is that they were killed," said Rojas. "I don't see any reason why they would be killed, but someone said the bank employees must have known some of the robbers."

Police found no security footage that could help track down the robbers.

The Inquirer saw evidence bags containing video tapes, but a crime scene officer said these were found already destroyed.

Isolated place

"Look around. There are just grasslands," Rojas said, indicating the weedy landscape fronting the office of roughly 80 square meters, which is accessible mainly by private vehicles and tricycles.

Governor Lazaro said a "horrific" crime such as this was a first in the history of Laguna.

"I had a prediction that something like this would happen here because this is an isolated place," she said.

Lazaro said she had ordered the police to make arrests within three days.

"There should be more patrols here by the barangay and police. There are so many big companies here and we should be careful about security," she said, referring to the many locators in the 173-hectare Light Industry & Science Park of the Philippines.

She said she would meet shortly with police officials to discuss peace and order in the province.

Barangay Captain Caparas said the community was shocked because this was the first time such a crime had happened.

"Normally, there are petty crimes. But this one really frightened the people," he said.

Caparas said the crime could frighten investors and workers.

"It was also surprising because the security inside the industrial zone is very tight," he said.

Grief

Distraught relatives came trickling in throughout Fridayafternoon, many almost unable to speak.

"I got a call from the security agency asking me if my husband went to work. I said, ‘Yes, he left at 6 a.m... I'm sure he's there because he goes to work even when he is sick," said Baltazar Aguilando's weeping wife, Susan, as her relatives pulled her away from the media.

Juan Leyva's family has yet to recover from a recent loss, and now faced yet another death.

"He was really the kindest brother. I don't know now what to do because someone in the family just died yesterday," said Leyva's sister, Lydia.

In Manila, anti-gun advocate Nandy Pacheco issued a statement calling on President Macapagal-Arroyo "to ask Congress to increase the penalty for illegal possession of firearms to reclusion temporal (from 12 to 20 years, without pardon and parole), and to order a total gun ban in public places except for uniformed police officers who are on duty."

Task Force RCBC

And PNP Director General Avelino Razon ordered the Region 4-A commander, Chief Supt. Ricardo Padilla, to form "Task Force RCBC" to go after the perpetrators.

Task Force RCBC will be composed of investigators from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, Crime Laboratory, and Traffic Management Group, all from the Region 4-A command, and the Laguna police, said the PNP spokesperson, Chief Supt. Nicanor Bartolome.

The San Antonio Spurs' Big Three came through. Now they have to win one on the road to keep their title defense alive. Manu Ginobili scored 25 points, Tim Duncan had 20 points and 15 rebounds, and Tony Parker added 15 points in the Spurs' 99-80 victory over the New Orleans Hornets in Game 6 on Thursday night. The win forced a seventh game in the Western Conference semifinals on Monday in New Orleans. Home teams are 20-1 in the second round.
