Unsay kalainan sa bahal ug tuba?

Quote from: Macky Ferniz on July 11, 2009, 10:18:03 PM

Bahal : Cabernet Chauvignon version of coconut wine.

Siete Viernes: This term itself is in Spanish. Class paminawon, but refers to Tuba.

Thats one thing Im ashamed of that I grew up here in the USA, because I wasn't exposed to a greater form of Bisaya or even Tagalog. Thats one thing I wish i had, the ability to speak and understand bisaya to a greater extent. Growing up around Americans and speaking only English and the occasional Spanish (to my latino buddies), one grows up alienated from one's own Ancestral Culture and Ancestral Tongue.

This forum site, definitely, has re-awakened my Bol-anon blood. And to find and learn more of my culture, and most of all, my Native Tongue.

1. Kon Katsila, kini expression sa kasuko, katingala, o kasakit. (As in, "Ay, karamba. Donde esta la silya tumba-tumba.")

2. Kon Hapon, ah, buot ipasabot kon diin matawo si Rizal. (So desu ka, Karamba, Raguna.)

Joke joke joke!

According to my Universidad de Chicago Diccionario, doncella means virgin, maiden; maidservant.

I wonder if upward class mobility has turned the "maidservant" to a "lady of the court" in 20 years, when I bought this dictionary.

Quote from: Lorenzo on July 05, 2009, 08:40:40 AM
Actually, no it does not.

The word Doncella literally means "Pretty Lady, Beautiful girl"

The meaning has changed over the years; and from region to region it is used.

It can be used as: Esa doncella es mi hija.  (My daughter is very pretty)
---This is the MODERN way of using it--

Historically, doncella would be used to refer to a lady of the court. A lady in waiting. Noble lady. Literally and figuratively.

---

Again, remember that there are over 600 million Spanish speakers in the world. The majority of whom are in Latin and South America.

Only 40-50 million are from Spain.

Idioms that are used will differ from region to region. And every region will apply their own meaning for a particular word/phrase. hehehe.

Its pretty cool tho isn't it? The evolution of language. The transformation of the original.

LGU Philippines / Re: Gloria Arroyo in Bohol Day
July 10, 2009, 10:13:15 PM
I just hope that PGMA's visit to Bohol will not herald a change of political wind as far as Con-ass or Arroyo's term extension is concerned. We know of course that presently, there is fissure in the political landscape on Arroyo's 2010 plans, with Chatto and Cajes on one side and Aumentado on the other. Given the volatility of our politicians' loyalties, I hope this Bohol Day visit--coming on the heels of Aumentado's inclusion in Arroyo's official entourage to Russia--will not result in these politicians' consensus in favor of Arroyo's 2010 plans.

Grabe pud ning imong nga nakubkub nga pulong, Bai Koddi.

Quote from: Koddi Prudente on July 10, 2009, 08:03:35 PM
"Tuba" (same pronunciation as the coco wine) also means "to harvest", BUT specifically for banana. "Nagtuba ko'g saging."  We have quite a lot of words that are equivalent to the word "harvest" or "pick". They are specific only to certain crops.

Examples:

Kutlo - kamunggay, batong, salingsing/buwak sa kalabasa, etc.
Pupu - prutas
Dughit - prutas (using a pole with or without a pouch)
Saka - lubi
Kubkub - kamote
Panglin - ubi
Ibot - sibuyas
Ani - humay

Here the “panahon” is bad (raining).  Miduyog ang panahon sa gibati kong kapungot. Here the “panahon” is also bad (thunder and lightning).

”Himungaan” is chicken or mother hen, while “himunga” means having the tendency to bear a lot of fruit.  â€œAng himungaan nagpasilong sa himunga nga mangga.” Here the mangga does not necessarily bear fruit at the time when the himungaan seeks refuge under its shade. But when it bears fruit (anytime), maghitik (profuse, plentiful) gyud ang bunga niini.

“Panon” also applies to a group of persons (many persons) usually moving towards one direction.

Incidentally, this expression is never used by the Japanese. You see, language carries with it a cultural mindset, which in the Japanese setting, means to be humble, sometimes to intentionally put oneself down, if only for the sake of social courtesy.

A Japanese friend once made this observation on how an American (who speaks Japanese) and a native Japanese typically react to a compliment. This is assuming that both have the same level of skill in whatever they're doing.

Japanese: Anata ha sakka- ga jozu desu ne. (You're very good at soccer.)
American: Mochiron. Mainichi renshu shite iru kara desu. (Of course. I practice every day, that's why.)

Japanese: Anata ha sakka- ga jozu desu ne. (You're very good at soccer.)
Japanese: Iie, tondemoarimasen. Motto renshu shinakerebanarimasen. (No, not at all. I really need to practice some more.)

Therefore, to say, "Watashi ha kawaii desu" is grammatically perfect but culturally awkward, if not improbable.

How To Tips / Re: Three Amazing Tips to Be Happy
July 06, 2009, 10:41:50 AM
Hi Bedo,

I am in the middle of an important task, but couldn't keep myself from replying to this now. Maayo na lang I'm my own boss, wala'y mangasaba nako. You see, it's a rainy Monday (what worse combination can you get?) and I really need a lift-me-up for the week ahead. My son is leaving back for Bohol tomorrow, and I'll be alone again. Hopefully, I'll be joining my family for about 5 days in Bohol towards the end of this month.

I'm exactly in the same position as this guy when he called it "those were the days." I sent my family ahead of me, to see if they could adjust to the new clime and setting. After one year, everything is not perfectly smooth but they're getting by. Next year, I am thinking of moving there for good. Since I am self-employed and my work is consultancy and translation--the bulk of which can be done on the internet--I am now arranging a way for me to bring even half of my accounts and continue my work by internet, while teaching in one of the universities or colleges in Bohol for a few hours a week. I have anxieties that I may have to make major adjustments as far as level of comfort, but I decided I want out of the rat race and the bad economy.

I think we all come to a turning point, when we just say we're past the momentum and need a new impetus to move forward. When I was a child in Wao, near the boundary to Bukidnon, I spent weekends with my mother and sibling tilling the farm. We were poor but happy. I may not become the "Lettuce King" of Bohol, but I believe I'll be very happy to plant kamote in my backyard.

Nice share there SiR Ben.

Livin' the good life is not fancy trips, and expensive jewels, and high brow country clubs.  Rather, livin' the good life is livin' the moment!

An inspiring story circulating many years ago that kept on nesting in my head  ;D.  It is a story of a successfull career oriented individual who honed and polished his consultancy skills abroad.  After a challenging and adventurous 25 years, he decided to call it  "those were the days" by going back to his native place in the province.   There he enjoyed the company of his family, his parents and love ones and going fishing almost everyday at the seaside, reading books and enjoying the sunset.  As time goes by he find solace, peace and happiness that he never had during his entire life.

One day his former boss arrived and convinced him to join him one more time for a long term project in Dubai.  The following transpired during their conversation:

John............ :  Would you join the group for a long term project in Dubai ?

Boholano.....:   I'm sorry John, I am already happy and contented here enjoying my life with my family.  I would definitely miss my fishing and staring this beautiful sunset.  Things that I missed before.

John............:   We'll you could do that and have all the time after 5 or 8 years when the project is completed!  And by then you go back here fishing with your family and do what you want to do in this wharf of yours everyday .

Boholano....:   Well if after 8 years that I'll be standing here again,  I might as well stay and enjoy the rest of my life.   I will surely miss what I'm enjoying  today.  I'm sorry John I can't join your group.

:)

Fore !

Pa farming farming nalang (something that he loves)  ug mga vegetables ug nag  supply sa mga food chains in the Philippines and even abroad.  Karon pa golf golf nalang.   :)

My older sister just shared with me this reflection she wrote for her graduate school. After more than 22 years of juggling time between family and work and doing anything but academic, she decided to go back to school in her mid-40s in response to what she felt like "mid-life crisis." I am inspired by her strong determination for self-empowerment.

Turning forty years old was the great awakening period in my life. I reached the point of feeling discontented and unproductive with the lifestyle and career that had provided me comfort and happiness over the years. At forty, I was struggling with a career that had no chance for advancement despite my competence and hard work. Although I had the compassion needed in my job as a nursing assistant, I was caught in the dilemma of boredom, unproductiveness, stagnation and most of all, a career setback. I felt a great sense of remorse for my lack of persistence in pursuing my goal in life. At forty, I felt I could have achieved a more rewarding career. Instead, I procrastinated for many years even when I knew that I had the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue my career to a professional level.

Ashford, Leroy & Lortie elaborate that “adults at midlife are most typically characterized by a new perspective about their world, including a new definition of self, new expectations about what they want to accomplish, and new satisfaction in living.” (Ashford, Leroy, & Lortie, 2006p.509).
True to this observation, I decided to go back to school to empower myself and to find new perspectives in life. At this age, I was motivated to embrace Erickson’s theory of generativity where the focus in life is to provide goods and services for the benefit of society and reaching out to others in ways that guide future generations (p.509). Erickson likewise emphasizes that the development of generativity is essential for embracing effectively the stage of old age (Bergen, 2008). With time passing so fast, I felt that approaching old age was not far behind.

Reassessing my physical well-being was one aspect I considered important in my middle adulthood transition. Although turning forty was my awakening period, I was at the same time overwhelmed by insecurities and fears that I was losing my youth and beginning to show signs of age. For instance, wrinkles in my hands became noticeable, problems with eyesight emerged, and few gray hairs were appearing which I concealed with hair color.

Ashford (2006) states that significant physical changes occur in middle adulthood and most individuals are less fit and have fuller body shape. She further expounds that those additional years in middle adulthood create gray heads, lots of bald heads, and lined faces. The realities of these physical changes in middle adulthood challenged me to maintain a healthy lifestyle to remain physically fit. For instance, I work out regularly and maintain proper diet and nutrition. In fact, I am more physically fit and health-conscious now than I was in my younger years. But there are other aspects that concern me in my aging process, such as menopausal period, illnesses, and perhaps, death. However, my priority at this age is to have control over a healthful lifestyle to continue to improve my future health so that I will still be physically and mentally fit and competent in fulfilling my goal in life to be generative.

Quote from: Koddi Prudente on July 04, 2009, 09:48:49 PM
I notice that the phrase "sa imoha" (yours) is used instead of "nimo" or "kanimo" (you).

Please note the difference between the two in the following senses:

"Ganahan baya ko nimo." vs "Ganahan baya ko sa imoha." The first refers to the person YOU, the second refers to what YOU, the person, have or possess.  In fact, almost always, the latter means  "Ganahan baya ko sa imong b*s*ng."

Similarly, we should not use "sa akoa" (mine) if what we really mean is "nako" or "kanako" (me). Please notice the difference between these two sentences:

"Nganong nagsigi ka man og tutok nako/kanako?" vs "Nganong nagsigi ka man og tutok sa akoa?" The latter actually means "Why are you constantly staring at mine?". Almost always, this means "Why are you constantly staring at my genital?"

Same with "ato/atoa" (ours) and "nato/kanato" (us). "Nagsigi lagi na siya'g tan-aw sa atoa." (She's constantly staring at our genitals.) vs "Nagsigi lagi na siya'g tan-aw nato." (She's constantly staring at us.)

Gracious God! That this tragedy has been documented with a time series of photographs makes it so real, as though we ourselves were witnesses. Life is indeed frail and fleeting. What hopes and dreams were washed away with these young men? The ways of God are unfathomable. But we just have to trust that he is sovereign even when "the oceans rise and thunders roar." I am sure that God will have mercy and sustain the bereaved through this tragedy, letting them soar with Him above the storm.

Bay Koddi,

Multi-disciplinary diay gyud imong background. Sunod tuig pohon, ug madayon ko'g uli for good, bisita sa Tagbilaran aron makaistorya ta kay murag daghan ta'g common interest. It's deplorable that the pure Binisiya is now spoken only among marginal groups. I was asked to translate a Japanese TV program last year that was shot in a village near Talibon. Murag sakto jud ang panahom nga ang pinulungan nato is veering towards extinction faster than the tarsier. That time, I started a thread here to seek the help of members, and the inputs really helped in my job. Akong idugang to diri sa akong compilation.

Quote from: Koddi Prudente on July 04, 2009, 08:36:44 PM
My first job even before I graduated from college was to translate agri-research-based information into Binisaya. It was very difficult considering that I had to deal with technical terms like parts of a plant and cultural practices in crop and livestock production.  It is observed that the truly (and more complete) Binisaya words are now spoken only among the fisherfolk, farmers and carpenters. Samut gyud akong pagtahod nimo Bay. You can write 'indecent' poetry and quote the Old Testament in one breath.

Quote from: hubag bohol on July 04, 2009, 03:20:31 PM

Mari,

In-ana jud na Marie, creative people are usually introverts. But you know in the real world, 50% of the reason that a product sells is its intrinsic value and 50% is marketing. So if you can create but can't sell, find someone who can sell it for you.

She started with 30K designing and creating accessories actually mga 2 months ago ra man diay, but the business is rolling on with 8 agents and outlets.

Quote from: Mari on July 04, 2009, 08:17:59 PM

Kuya Bene, mao jud nay kulang nako 'sales talk'. I am not gifted with that, i am a backstage person. Naa pa gani koy freelance designing. Cge ingon si Steve visit hotels, resorts, restaurants and sell your skill for their calling cards, menus and other printed promo materials pero di kaya ng powers nako ang mangatubang.

Bitaw Bay Hubag, basig badlungon na ta ani. Balik sa ta sa pagkalunsay.

Unsay buot-pasabot sa "kamot nga balhiboon" ug unsay gigikanan ana nga idiom?

Naa pud ko'y laing pangutana. Kanag sud-an nga humba, mao ba na ang pagkaluto murag adobo o kanang nangka nga gitunuan?

Quote from: hubag bohol on July 04, 2009, 02:26:07 PM

Mari,

Naa man pud negosyo nga pwede sa mas gamay nga kapital unya hilig pa nimo. Mas maayo nga dili nimo ihurot o isabwag tanan nga puhunan kay bisag unsa nga negosyo, naa may kauban nga risk.

Bisan gani 20 K pwede man ka magsugod ana. Akong misis nagsugod sa in-anang kantidad diha sa Tagbilaran. Mahilig man pud siya mag-design ug accesories, pareho nimo artistic daw kuno.

Happiness: 3 amazing tips from the world's oldest case study
by Yeah Dave (David Romanelli), on Tue Jun 23, 2009 4:29pm PDT

We’ve all heard countless studies, articles and TV interviews on happiness. But the other day I stumbled upon something that is just now being revealed to the media for the first time.* It's a 72 year old study that began all the way back in 1937 when 268 Harvard University sophomores were asked to participate in a study measuring “a formula-some mix of love, work, and adaptation-for a good life.” And while many of those who were college sophomores in 1937 are now dying or in their fading twilight, this study continues to be diligently maintained to this very day.

And never before has science been able to report such fascinating and thoroughly time-tested results on happiness. Following are 3 powerful lessons from this study.

1. Have a Healthy Outlet

So many of the people in this study seemed to have all their ducks in a row. In their prime years in the 1950’s and 1960’s, they were making big money in powerful careers. They had beautiful families and lived in idyllic neighborhoods. Oddly enough, later in life, many of these fortunate people ended up breaking down mentally and physically. Why? If one didn’t have a healthy outlet for their fears, nerves, and struggles, it was only a matter of time before repressed demons erupted to the surface. The happiest people in this study had a healthy outlet. They were altruistic or had a rich sense of humor. They funneled their issues into sport, “their lust into courtship.”

It’s something important to consider. As the study proves, a human being can get away with sustaining daily nerves, fears, and doubts for a number of years. But ultimately, such a nervous nelly will crack. If you haven’t already, develop an outlet…find a sport, commit to helping others, lighten up, and laugh more often. A wise one said, "A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs, jolted by every pebble in the road."

2. Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously

This study, as reported in Atlantic Magazine, was summed up beautifully by the journalist Joshua Shenk: “Herein lies the key to a good life--not rules to follow, nor problems to avoid-- but an engaged humility, an earnest acceptance of life’s pains and promises.”

In other words, one can only carry the burden of a big ego and lots of pride for so long before your proverbial knees will buckle. Don’t take life too seriously. We all have weaknesses. Do you really want to battle your dark side year after year? Or might it just be time to lay down your arms, take a deep breath, and enjoy life. It’s shorter than you think.

3. Happiness Must be Shared

The other night I was watching the movie adaptation of Into the Wild, the true story of Chris McCandless (see above photo which is a self-portrait found undeveloped in McCandless's camera after his death). Fed up with the rat race, McCandless graduated college in the early 1990's, left his worried parents in the dust, sold all his belongings, and ventured deep into the Alaskan wilderness. Before dying of starvation, he seemed to regret his isolationist ways and wrote these last words in his journal, “Happiness only real when shared.” According to the 72 year old study, McCandless was spot on. In the study, those who spent too much alone time ultimately struggled. The happiest subjects in the study were those who sustained meaningful, healthy relationships with friends and family. One can never give enough hugs, say enough "I love you's," and send enough "I miss you's."

As I emphasize in my book and to my own crazy self each and every day: Livin' the good life is not fancy trips, and expensive jewels, and high brow country clubs. Rather, livin' the good life is livin' the moment!

*This study was reported in the media for the first time by ATLANTIC MAGAZINE, June 2009

Koddi,

You can re-launch your music career by singing "Ben" during our EB, not only for me but for all TB friends. It would make a wonderful theme song for the EB. We all seem to be long-lost friends gone our separate ways, and after life has dealt us our different lots are finally back to one another's company.

Ben

Ben, the two of us need look no more
We both found what we were looking for
With a friend to call my own
I'll never be alone
And you, my friend, will see
You've got a friend in me
(you've got a friend in me)

Ben, you're always running here and there
You feel you're not wanted anywhere
If you ever look behind
And don't like what you find
[ Find more Lyrics on www.mp3lyrics.org/8dGf ]
There's something you should know
You've got a place to go
(you've got a place to go)

I used to say "I" and "me"
Now it's "us", now it's "we"
I used to say "I" and "me"
Now it's "us", now it's "we"
Ben, most people would turn you away
I don't listen to a word they say
They don't see you as I do
I wish they would try to
I'm sure they'd think again
If they had a friend like Ben
(a friend) Like Ben
(like Ben) Like Ben

Modesty aside, I was the best moonwalker while I was in college.  Earlier, when I was younger, people would cry when I sang "Ben" during programs. In high school I also sang "One Day in Your Life" in public. MJ was indeed one great influence in my aborted musical career.

It is rare for a man to live in both worlds within a lifetime: meteoric rise to unparelled fame and fortune, and equally abysmal fall from grace.

No matter,  his songs will always remain in everyone's heart. Nobody ever sang and performed with impact to as wide a scope of audience.

Honestly, I sort of felt relieved that he is now finally released from all the torments of a life gone haywire.  I also say a prayer of thanks for the obscure, ordinary life that He gives you and me--in which we can more freely take gasps of comfort for the everyday pains and pitfalls of living. May he rest in peace.

Your incisive thinking in many disciplines--from medicine to languages to history (with Rizal-like breadth)--is amazing.

As to Ambeth Ocampo, if he can't tell moss from paint, he has no right to be the custodian of the country's historical treasures.

jamo2X,

There are about 180,000 foreign trainees in Japan across all categories. Many of them are technical trainees deployed to factories and farms supposedly to learn new technologies that they could apply back home. I know first-hand about their situation because some 20 trainees attend our church. The reality is that aside from the Japanese language classes that they attend so they could understand the procedures and commands in their workplace, they are really just ordinary laborers who are paid 1/3 the salary of their Japanese counterparts. The ones who attend our church receive better treatment than most, which means they have comfortable, free accommodation and day-offs. But many trainees live under oppressive conditions of long working hours, low pay and shabby accommodation.

The 34 deaths mainly from overwork mentioned in this news report refers to the trainees in general, and not just to the Filipino nursing trainees, who just arrived here last May. But given the load of work in health institutions in Japan, because this is known as a greying society (in 20 years time, there will be more people above 60 years of age here than below), it is not far-fetched that our health care trainees will themselves be exposed to health hazards of overwork.

You're right, Gloria Arroyo is spending millions of dollars peddling valuable Filipino labor for a pittance overseas.

Quote from: jamo2x on June 24, 2009, 11:23:39 PM
i've seen this 'nurse trainees' feature news thru abs-cbn; they showed Gloria as the heroine to make this negotiation a reality.
but they did not mention the death toll of this 'training scheme'.
WHAT!
what a shame...Gloria is kinda like selling our nurses to the japs for almost free service and some died for unknown reasons...that's baloney and terrible!

i can understand that some nurses would go for this almost 'no-pay' training due to the surplus of nurses in our country but hearing some of them died performing their duties. this ought to be investigated and govt should stop this program and bring back all the nurses here in pinas.

Hi Belle,

I'm planning on a more slow-paced academic career in Bohol, tudlu-tudlo ug ginagmay sa mga universities.

I feel at this stage that I'm just standing still and sitting out at the same time. I just have the urge to take a leap of faith if only to feel I'm alive!

Bohol Daily News

INTERIOR and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno hailed local government initiatives here and candidly admitted Bohol should teach the department about how it is done in Bohol.

In his visit to witness the signing of pledge of commitment between the Republic of the Philippines through the DILG, Bohol Provincial Government and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Sec. Puno said he pays tribute to Bohol for dramatically moving from rock bottom to halfway to the richest of the provinces.

He called the LGSP LED as essentially what the department is teaching the Filipinos after the government ahs put up the institutional reforms to capacitate local governments of their devolved powers and their inherent corporate powers according to the local government code.

The LGSP LED in would be implemented in the Bohol Integrated Area Development Cluster 5 and would be piloted for interior towns in enhancing governance and stakeholder capacity and in local agri-eco-tourism development.

Over this, he thanks the CIDA for believing and recognizing the promise of Bohol.

Admitting as a hardcore local government empowerment advocate himself, he told the members of the Provincial Development Council. Peace and Order Council, Sangguniang Panlalawigan, League of Municipalities of the Philippines, Vice Mayor’s League Bohol Chapter and Association of Barangay Councils on a joint meeting that he had goose-bumps when he heard local leaders addressing in the parlance of professionals relishing the full empowered language of the local government’s corporate entity.

At the packed Dagohoy Hall of the Bohol Tropics Resort, Sec. Puno also noticed that Bohol has really gone so much since the enactment of the local government code.

He heaped praises for Bohol and capped it by urging local officials to make the national government realize that development must really start at the local levels.

For Boholanos, he said “whatever you are doing, keep doing it because it is working. (PIA)

Nangita man daw lagi siya ug investors ug bag-ong labor markets for OFWs.

After visiting Japan 7 times, curtsying before the Imperial Throne while stretching one hand backwards towards the Official Development Aid (ODA) people, she finally got some 300 nurses and caregivers in. (This is really a droplet compared to the 100,000 entertainers who were suddenly banned from Japan when Gloria gave in to the Iraqi terrorists and pulled out Philippine troops in exchange for Angelo Reyes' life.)   This time, she intended to press Japan to increase the quota for nursing and caregiver trainees under the Japan Philippine Econonomic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA) which has just been ratified.

The Filipina nurses here come as trainees who are paid a measly allowance during the 3-year training program during which they have to pass the Japanese-language national nursing board or be deported.

It is impossible for a foreigner to pass the Japanese-language nursing board, whose passing rate even for the Japanese is not 100%.

The "training scheme" is just a ploy to make available free health care service to the Japanese, which is burdened by an increasing number of old people.

The trainees are the most abused foreigners here in Japan. Banner story yesterday says, "thirty-four foreign trainees died in Japan in fiscal 2008 through March this year, up 13 from the previous year to hit a record high, a survey by a government-linked body promoting a training program showed Monday." The cause of death is overwork.

Maybe Arroyo should do more than traipse through the imperial court and work alongside her nursing trainees the next time she comes around.

The degradation of our nurses into overworked, underpaid trainees is not worth the millions of dollars she spends on beggar diplomacy.

Have gang, will travel

Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 00:05:00 06/23/2009

BY the time president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo returns from her swing through Russia, South Korea, Japan and Brazil, she will have made 52 trips to 30 countries in eight years and spent billions of pesos in taxpayers’ money. There can be no doubt that she is the most widely traveled president in Philippine history. If someone would only bother to authenticate it, she could very well bid for the title of the most peripatetic head of state in the world.

Here’s a list of the countries she has visited: United States, 10 trips; China, 7; Japan, 7; Malaysia, 6; Brunei, 4; United Kingdom, 3; South Korea, 3; Thailand, 3; Hong Kong, 3; Mexico, 2, Italy 2; Bahrain, 2; Dubai, 2; and 1 each: Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, Kuwait, France, Chile, Vatican City, Saudi Arabia, Macau, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Dubai, Peru, Qatar, Egypt, Syria, Russia and Brazil.

The President’s entourage on these trips has been almost invariably largeâ€"from about 30 to 192 (the 2007 trip to France, Spain and the United Kingdom). There is nothing to justify the travel of such huge delegations on presidential trips. The Philippines is not a world power, the trips were not of global importance and the Philippine president is just a dot in geopolitics, unlike the US president. The Philippines is not a rich country, unlike the United States.

A comprehensive estimate has not yet been made of the public funds spent on the President’s travels, but judging from the frequency and length of the trips, the great distances traveled, the people included in her entourage, the airplanes chartered to fly them and the posh hotels where they were billeted, the total could easily run into billions of pesos.

Just to give the readers an idea of the money spent on these extravagant trips: Senator Panfilo Lacson said about P800 million was spent on foreign travel in 2008. A news research report based on the Commission on Audit’s report on the Office of the President said in December 2007 that P482 million, or nearly a fifth of the OP expenditures, was spent on travel expenses in 2006. It was more than double the P210 million spent for travel expenses of the Office of the President in 2005.

In January 2008, Ms Arroyo flew to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, with an 86-member delegation composed of Cabinet officials, legislators and local officials. Attending the Davos forum is not cheap. To give you an idea: The world’s largest businesses pay 42,500 Swiss francs (26,300 euros or $38,700 or P1.6 million) apiece for annual membership and an extra 11,000 euros (P668,646) per person to attend the meeting. A two-star hotel in Davos costs $300 a night.

Ms Arroyo has not allowed public opinion to get in the way of her proclivity for going on extravagant foreign travels. Last year, for instance, she continued on her trip to the United States even after Typhoon “Frank’’ battered Central Philippines, leaving thousands of people homeless, destroying millions of pesos in public works, crops and private property, and sinking the MV Princess of the Stars, with a loss of 807 lives. She is supposed to be the “mother of the nation,’’ but instead of returning home immediately to look after the needs of the typhoon victims and to commiserate with the survivors, she and her entourage traipsed off to foreign shores. She was like Nero who fiddled while Rome burned.

An observer of these presidential trips gets the impression of a chief executive who wants to squeeze the greatest personal, material and financial benefit from the perks of the office, and the taxpaying public be damned! Especially now that she is scheduled to bow out of Malacañang (actually, we don’t know if she will really leave the seat of power in 2010), she can be expected to go on more foreign trips paid for by taxpayers’ money up to perhaps April 2010.

It is well that the Senate committee on finance will conduct an inquiry into Ms Arroyo’s foreign trips. The taxpaying public will then get an idea of how profligate she has been with their money. Or how insensitive she has been to the suffering of the people whose urgent needs could have been ministered to with the billions of pesos that were spent on foreign junkets. Let the profligacy of Ms Arroyo be disclosed, and then watch the people weep and gnash their teeth.

Given the millions in taxpayers' money involved, this is just a slap on the wrist.

Quote from: Tubag Bohol Dot Com on June 22, 2009, 11:30:44 PM
By the Bohol Chronicle

The decision, a copy of which was obtained by one of the main complainants of the case, Engr. Petronilo Sarigumba, still cleared five officials of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) but meted a one-month suspension against Provincial Irrigation Officer Engr. Calixto Seroje.

What came as a surprise to Sarigumba however is the similar content of the decision released in November last year with the same date and signatories â€" that of Graft Investigator Sarah Jo Vergara, Director Edgardo Canton and Visayas Ombudsman Virginia Palanca-Santiago.

The 25-page resolution, signed by Deputy Ombudsman Orlando Casimiro on November 11, 2008 but released only recently, dismissed the charges “for lack of substantial legal basis.”

What was changed from the first resolution is that Seroje, one of the five charged in the complaint, is “found administratively guilty of simple misconduct and meted the penalty of suspension for a period of one month and one day without pay and benefits…”

Seroje is likewise warned by the Ombudsman that a repetition of a similar infraction in the future “shall be dealt with more severely”.

Happiness is a decision we make.

Happiness is not a parade outside to which we are only spectators, but is a celebration that we decide to make in our heart.

Happiness is not all about the bright sun that shines on a cloudless day, but the confetti we throw in our hearts even when the sky is overcast.

It is remarkable that whenever Paul exhorts Christians to rejoice, he reminds them to hold on to joy through sufferings, grief, afflictions, distress...

We are happy when we decide to be happy, whatever our situation in life.  It springs from our hope in God, that whatever it is we're going through is simply a necessary rite of passage enroute to the glorious joy that awaits those who carry through to the very end.

Hi Beds,

Thanks for elevating not only the issue, but also us as "padrinos." Na-promote tawon ug kalit, murag naniguwang na ta ani.

Even as I personally consider the issue of international hotel chains making an entry into the Bohol tourist industry good news, I can also accept dissenting points of views on this matter. I think our LGU has to make and enact policy guidelines to enhance the stake of the locals in the tourism sector.

We can learn from Bea Zobel, who was initially pilloried by the locals for her otherwise great rehabilitation and preservation projects in Dauis and Baclayon, and changed tack midstream to incorporate the community in the projects.

The LGUs should launch skills training for the locals so that they can be employable in the world-class tourism sector. For example, our LGU can train tour guides who are conversant in English and other foreign languages (Japanese, European, etc.), have world-standard culinary skills, experts in rapelling, diving and other special tourism segments, etc.

The tourism industry--as a whole--should not be an enclave for the rich and famous, and foreign--let's leave this to Eskaya as its business strategy.

Unless there is sideward or lateral positive effects of tourism in the lives of Boholanos, we may just be aggravating the divide between the haves and the have-nots. But if tourism is steered so that it generates employment in the hospitality sector (hotels, resorts and resutaurants), stimulates related services (like retail, transportation, education, etc.) and local production (handicraft, food, etc.), I believe it will be sustainable in the long run.

I can't help but cry tears of joy for this. Now I know why the string of messages in this forum are called "threads." It's because our lives are like threads that are enmeshed at certain points in the past, present or future, and this is the venue that spotlights those links.

I am also surprised by the many interconnections I have stumbled into since joining TB. I am surprised to learn that Jun Ayag's mom was a friend of my own mother, and that I was occasionally left to her care when I was just a toddler. Jun and I must have played with each other as kids. I don't really remember well...

That TB is able to connect new friends and reconnect old ties means that it has really penetrated not only Boholanos' lives but also people with ties to Bohol like Luisa. Motivated by his frustation at nobody ever answering any inquiry about or from Bohol, Mike must be truly happy that many questions, prayers and dreams are being answered daily in this forum. God bless us all!

It is common knowledge that all forms of corrupt practices have been used to sustain this administration through its term, and probably beyond.

But we have to check the source of this information, and not just take it hook, line and sinker. First of all, the language of this report is not typical of World Bank. Secondly, the tone is not objective and its allegations are left unsubstantiated. Thirdly, it just reads like the writer either has a personal grudge or has a political agenda against the Arroyos...

We've all fallen victims to circular or chain mails like this before because in this cyber-age, it's easy to attach any respectable name or byline to a document that really just intends to malign certain quarters.

All the gubenatorial candidates have their own field of competencies.  And we voters must elect/select objectively and not be based on popularity or machinery.

We have to assess where their (Edgar, Julius, Cesar) competencies/skills be best suited in terms of governance.

Let us not focus on which parties they belonged ( Administration, Opposition, Independent ).  The thing is how their platfors (action plans) would bring great positive  impact / change to the majority of Bohol constituents.

yup, BOT and the concession is 25yrs. sauna, ang tag-ija mga lopezes and gi baligja mi sa MPIC of pangilinan group sa pldt/smart. maayo ang pagbaligja sa company because MPIC is very aggresive to expand. right now we are in the planning stage to connect north and south expressways thru PNR existing line. taas expressaway, ubos rail road. MPIC is willing to invest php 31B for the project. am sure this would help to decongest traffic in manila and and we could cut travel time from north to south from 1.5hr or more to 15minutes.

tama ka ben. just like here in toll road industry. namatay ang nlex noon due to politics. politicians were dictating the toll fee for political interest without considering if the toll they want can handle the maintenance of the toll road facility.

nowadays here in nlex it seem that they are not dictating us on our toll fee but the service nlex now offers is world class. i hear, that a congressman in the south is demanding a lower toll fee at slex. for sure he could have a lot of votes in next years election if the concessionaire cave in and those malaysian investors knees will surely rattle  hadlok unsaon pagbawi sa investment nila!

God Bless Us All.

Natural Reforestation Succeeds in RP Sites
Written by Willy Rodolfo III / Reporter

TAGBILARAN CITY, Boholâ€"Diosdado Abergosado is a typical farmer. Early mornings he usually goes to his small rice field in Danao town in central Bohol with his young wife and two kids.

This day, however, is different. Abergosado is meeting three other farmers and walking a few hours to the hills for their weeklong tour of duty.

Arbegosado and other farmers from San Miguel village take weeklong turns up in the hills, armed with lunch and a plywood board. Their objective is the pesky cogon grass. Their mission: to restore the once lush forest that they’ve heard of only in stories told by their elders.

“Our parents told us they used to see many animals in these forests. Now the forests are all grass,” he said. “I want my children to see those forests once again.”

The Philippines’ once-spectacular forests have by now disintegrated into patches or grooves mainly in Palawan and some parts of Luzon. Around 7 million hectares of forest remain in the country, a number that is dwindling fast. Rampant logging and burning by farmers to clear plots brought down the country’s forest cover to just around 20 percent of what it used to be.

There were efforts at reforestation, according to Environment Undersecretary Jeremias Dolino, particularly in the last two decades when the government spent billions of pesos to pay organizations and farmers to plant seedlings and take care of the trees.

He admitted, however, that the effort had their limitations. Once the funding stopped, the trees were left on their own. “The biggest challenge for us is to get the community involved,” Dolino said.

Farmer Arbegosado is part of a growing movement in Danao and in the Philippines to revive the country’s forests by not planting trees. Instead, he allows nature to run its course uninterrupted via a practical, cheap and sensible method called assisted natural regeneration (ANR).

According to Dr. Percy Sajise of Biodiversity International, ANR has long been presented as an effective way to revive Philippine forests but was put in the back seat by the more tangible tree-planting activities.

“Now ANR is getting the attention as the most cost-effective way to revive the forest,” said Sajise.

The ANR method helps nature rejuvenate herself. Sajise said by natural dispersion, seeds are scattered in random places and are left to grow and mature.

However, some of the saplings are covered by thick cogon grass so they wilt and die. To help ANR, volunteers look for these “naturally planted” seedlings, clear the pesky cogon, and allow the future tree to get all the nutrients and sunshine it needs to grow by on its own.

Sajise explained that with ANR, trees grow in their natural habitat, unlike tree-planting where new species are introduced in areas, which often leads to imbalance with other species. Most of all, ANR is cheap.

Conventional tree-planting requires the establishment of nurseries before transporting the seedlings to the mountains. Including the care for seedlings, the effort costs around P35,000 per hectare. ANR costs a little less than half of the amount.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO) saw how important the forest is and ANR in supporting livelihood in rural areas. So it funded a three-year program to pilot ANR campaigns in Bohol, Davao del Norte and Bataan.

According to Kazuyuki Tsurami, FAO representative in the Philippines, the total project cost for the three-year program was P240,000.

“ANR is one of a few methods to revive the forest and mitigate the effects of climate change without affecting the livelihood of the people. In fact, ANR allows the people to earn more,” Tsurami said. “Most of all, it is very cheap.”

According to Patrick Dugan of Bagong Pag-asa Foundation, which is helping UN FAO implement the ANR pilot programs, the three sites in the Philippines are reaping the economic benefits from ANR. Bataan is having pineapples and bananas, rubber for Davao, and Danao is reviving its forest to support its bid to be an ecotourism destination in Central Philippines.

“There is no bigger motivator than the economic reward,” Danao City Mayor Louis Thomas Gonzaga said. “Talking about climate change and global warming is too complicated for the people. But when you tell them we will all benefit economically because of the project, they will all support it.”

And with ANR and other support mechanisms in place, Danao has already earned more than P2 million from its EAT Danao ecotourism project in the first few months of the year as adventurers, bikers and families from nearby urban centers like Metro Cebu and Tagbilaran City flock to the town for a green recluse and an adventure in nature.

Its tourism industry has earned more than the total income from taxes in its public marketâ€"usually the biggest-earning enterprise of any local government unit. The project has also employed 50 people.

Tourists come to Danao to go hiking, kayaking, water-tubing, mountain biking, and run down a zipline and visit caves. The sites are in prime condition because of efforts by the locals to protect the environment.

As is the case with other projects, the challenge for ANR in the three pilot areas is sustainability. At present farmer Arbegosado receives P40 in allowance for every tour of duty. It will soon be over as the project is over.

Mayor Gonzaga and his town council, however, vowed to continue the program. He said proceeds from the ecotourism revenues will be placed in a special fund to expand the ANR areas and protect them from fireâ€"the biggest threat to the young forests.

The national government is also starting to see the benefits of ANR. For the first time, a P2-billion fund has been allotted for ANR across the country that includes a 50,000-hectare upland reforestation effort, according to Undersecretary Dolino said.

Tsurami said the UN FAO program opened the dam for funding agencies to get interested in ANR. UN FAO itself is considering extending the program in a second round.

In May, the UN FAO’s ANR project concluded with an international workshop in Bohol, attended by participants from Asia and Europe. Everybody agreed that ANR is the most sensible solution to recovering the lost forests of the world.

Arbegosado said he was happy to see a busload of foreigners and scientists visit his hilltop outpost in barangay San Miguel and see him work. But he couldn’t care less. For him, it’s all about his children and the forest that his family could see and enjoy in the future. Fortunately, that is more than enough.

LGU Philippines / Re: Politics As Usual

Politics will always be imperfect, but if we let chaos rule, that's hell.

Let's lower our expectation on others, including politicians. Let's increase our expectation of what we can do (this is our own sphere of influence, according to Stephen Covey).

We can start cleaning our own backyard, making sure we don't buy vote, we choose the platform instead of what a politicians wears on his platform, we don't participate in dishonest and selfish political trading.

The key is in us, the voters.

Pardon me, but the series of political pardons (or declaration of guiltlessness) is bewildering.

Gloria has pardoned Erap, who was proven beyond reasonable doubt to have ill-gotten weath.

The same administration, through the proxy statement of Raul Gonzales, hints at the possibility of letting go of Imelda's ill-gotten wealth charges as well.

The unspoken statement seems to be directed at Gloria's future successors: I've pardoned others before me, so you have to pardon me (in case I can't find a way to stay in office).

In this country, even the dispensation of justice is a political act.

Sa ranking sa mga accommodation facilities sa Bohol, those in the top are Amorita and Amarela which have very limited number of rooms. BBC has slipped down to something like #16, even below the Nuts Huts along Loboc. To be able to accommodate high-end local and foreign tourists, who really spend more, we should really upgrade our facilities.

Then the tourism bonanza will be distributed among the local stakeholders as well, dili lang ma-corner sa big players.

Ang problema daw sa Panglao ron kay wala daw block ownership ang mga yuta, pasabot walay area in the hectares nga usa ra ang owner nga pwede kapaliton sa mga hotel operators. Big hotels perhaps need at least one or two hectares.

Kay ug ako ang papilion i would prefer good beds than resorts!
