Mary is working as a legal assistant but hopes she can return to teaching. Her teaching license was revoked during the scandal, but she has now started tutoring and giving piano lessons. She is still registered as a sex offender, but is trying to get her name removed from the registry.

Their two teenage girls, who are in the same school district where Mary used to teach, said their parents have told them how they met, and they knew their mother was different from others when their interaction was limited to prison visits. But the girls seem unfazed by the controversial circumstances of how their family was formed.

“There was never a sit-down chat: ‘Now is the time we're going to talk to our children about this,” Mary said. “They seemed to already know ... because they grew up with it. ... There's just never been a, ‘Wow, we better explain.’”

Audrey graduates from high school this coming June, and will attend community college in the fall. Georgia is a sophomore and a cheerleader. Both sing in their high school choir. Their parents are very protective, and Vili said he has warned his daughters against having boyfriends.

“The reason for me telling them that was just from, out of experience,” he said. “A relationship could lead to something that you think you wanted back then. You don't really want it, maybe, years later.”

If either of their girls did what they did, if they came home one day and said they were sleeping with their teacher, both Mary and Vili said they would be shocked and upset.

“I don't support younger kids being married or having a relationship with someone older,” Vili said. “I don't support it.”

"It was a huge relief to actually get married... [after] just going through all those years and then having so many questions and them not being answered," he said.

Mary and Vili have stayed in the same Seattle community where Mary had lived with her first husband. When she and Vili got married, Mary said they didn’t move because they wanted to focus on "getting on track with life.” Through all of this, Mary said her four children from her previous marriage have remained part of their family.

“All of our holidays were always together,” she said. “And they're very close with their sisters.”
But for Vili, who is only about a year and a half older than Mary’s oldest son, it has been more difficult.

“It's an awkward feeling, for sure, to be close in age with someone technically your stepson or stepdaughter,” he said.

Today, Vili works at a home and garden center, but his passion is working his night job as a DJ. His DJ name is “DJ Headline.”

"I do a lot of weddings, private parties," he said. "Eventually, I want to get into producing."

“I’m surprised I’m still alive today,” Vili said. “I went through a really dark time.”

Vili grew up impoverished without a father and had a tumultuous relationship with his mother. When his affair with Mary began, and after she became pregnant with his child, Vili said he felt that he had no support system to help him through it.

“It was a huge change in my life, for sure,” he said. “I don’t feel like I had the right support, the right help behind me ... from my family, from anyone, in general. I mean, my friends couldn't help me because they had no idea what it was like to be a parent, I mean, because we were all 14, 15.”

Vili said he had counseling sessions, but even then he struggled because he said counselors wanted him to take antidepressant medication to "even him out."

“I don’t even think the counselors knew how to deal with it. It was just weird,” he said. “I was like, ‘Why do I need to be on an antidepressant pill?’ And they said it was to level you out so they can have a conversation with you. ... It just kind of just really annoyed me through the years.”

Vili was forbidden from visiting Mary in prison, but he said it would have helped him if he had been able to talk to her during that time.

“I think the only person that I really ... needed to talk to-- I mean, if they gave me more options or choices to make instead of just saying, ‘Oh, you can’t talk to her anymore,’ and I was like, ‘I really do want to talk to her, though,’” Vili said.

Mary was released from prison in August 2004, and the couple was married 10 months later in a lavish ceremony at a winery in Washington state. Vili was 21 years old.

Mary was paroled after serving six months on the condition that she stay away from Vili and attend counseling sessions for sex offenders. But within a month of being paroled, she was back in prison for ignoring the court order and her sentence was reinstated. While on parole, Mary became pregnant again with Vili's child and gave birth to a second daughter, Georgia, behind bars on October 16, 1998. Mary's husband then filed for divorce and moved their four children to Alaska.

For Vili, the journey to get where he is today has not been easy. He said he battled depression over the years.

"The incident was a late night that it didn't stop with a kiss," Mary said. "And I thought that it would and it didn't."

When asked if she felt guilty or disgusted with herself for having the affair, Mary said, "I loved him very much, and I kind of thought, 'why can't it ever just be a kiss?'"

By the end of summer 1996, Mary was pregnant with Vili's child, their first daughter. Shortly after the new year in 1997, Mary's husband discovered a love letter Mary had written. The authorities were alerted, and Mary was arrested.

The story of the Seattle teacher-student sex scandal caught wide national attention. She gave birth to her and Vili’s first child, Audrey, on May 29, 1997. Three months later, Mary pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree child rape. On Friday, Nov. 14, 1997, she was sentenced to 89 months in prison.

This interview is a part of Barbara Walters' upcoming new series, "American Scandal," on Investigation Discovery, which revisits some of her most famous interviews.

During the interview, Mary described how her and Vili's relationship moved from emotional to sexual when he was in middle school. When she was his teacher, she began to spend more and more time with Vili to help him develop what she thought was a gift for drawing. By the end of the school year, she said the two had bonded. By summer, they started having an affair.

Mary Kay Letourneau Fualaau, Vili Fualaau Detail Their Path From Teacher-Student Sex Scandal to Raising Teenagers
By JENNIFER JOSEPH, BROOKE STANGELAND, LAUREN PUTRINO and LAUREN EFFRON
6 hours ago
Good Morning America

When Mary Kay Letourneau Fualaau was forced to go public in 1997 with an affair she was having with her former sixth grade student, Vili Fualaau, after she became pregnant with his child, it was the teacher-student sex scandal heard around the world.

At the time, Mary was a 34-year-old, married teacher in Seattle, who already had four children of her own. Vili was just 13 years old. Mary was arrested and served seven and a half years in prison.

Today, Mary is 53 and Vili is 31. The couple is still together and are about to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. The two daughters they have together are now teenagers -- older than Vili was when the affair started.

Mary and Vili sat down for an exclusive interview with Barbara Walters to talk about how they managed to stay together all these years, despite their very public and forbidden relationship.

“If it wasn't strong enough in the beginning, it wouldn't have carried through those years,” Mary told Walters.

Science and Research / Zeigarnik Effect
April 10, 2015, 04:16:26 PM
The Zeigarnik Effect is the tendency to experience intrusive thoughts about an objective that was once pursued and left incomplete (Baumeister & Bushman, 2008, pg. 122). The automatic system signals the conscious mind, which may be focused on new goals, that a previous activity was left incomplete. It seems to be human nature to finish what we start and, if it is not finished, we experience dissonance.

A study done by Greist-Bousquet and Schiffman (1992) provided evidence for the Zeigarnik Effect. In this paper, the authors stated that there is a tendency or “need” to complete a task once it has been initiated and the lack of closure that stems from an unfinished task promotes some continued task related cognitive effort. The cognitive effort that comes with these intrusive thoughts of the unfinished task is terminated only once the person returns to complete the task.

In their study, two groups were observed. The first group was administered a list of 10 three letter anagrams they were asked to solve. The second group was given a list of 20 three letter anagrams they were asked to solve. The first group was asked to estimate the amount of time it took them to finish solving the list after they completed it. Their estimated time was then divided by the actual time it took them to finish. The average ratio for this group was 1.109 which means they were very close to correct (Greist-Bousquet & Schiffman, 1992).

The second group was abruptly interrupted after the first 10 three letter anagrams. They were asked to estimate how much time it took them to finish the first set of 10 (they were fully aware they still had 10 more anagrams to complete). They then proceeded to finish the last 10 anagrams. They were asked again to estimate the time it took to finish the second set of 10 anagrams. For the first set of 10 anagrams, the average ratio was 1.646, which meant they overestimated how much time it took them to finish. The average ratio was 1.346 for the second set of 10 anagrams (Greist-Bousquet & Schiffman, 1992), which was fairly accurate.

The second group overestimated the time it took them to complete the task because they were disrupted. This caused them to feel frustrated and experience a form of failure. This distress and thoughts of returning to the objective may have caused them to think they were slower at finishing the first 10 anagrams.

Hmm, a parachute would be too human-like. Breaking his fall or teaching him how to fly in one or two easy steps (or flaps, maybe?) would constitute a more persuasive evidence of godhood.

Sola.

Polygamy has long been a blight on Mormonism’s public relations. The founder of the religion, Joseph Smith, began claiming he had been commanded by God to take additional wives after his first wife caught him having sex with their teenage maid in the barn. Despite the fact that the Book of Mormon (which Smith said he translated by the power of God) denounces polygamy, Smith didn’t stop with two wives and, before he died, he had married close to 40 women and possibly many more.

Some of his brides were as young as 14, and he even married women who already had living husbands. Sometimes, he would send the husbands on missions in foreign countries and marry their wives while they were away and unable to object. However, the revelation that Smith said he received commanding polygamy specifically forbade women marrying more than one man. -- http://listverse.com/2015/

Amid relentless criticism of his handling of the Mamasapano incident, President Aquino’s satisfaction rating plunged to its lowest ever â€" a net of 11 percent in the first quarter.
In the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, 47 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with his performance, 36 percent were dissatisfied and 17 percent undecided. This meant a net satisfaction score of “moderate” 11 from the “good” 39 in the December 2014 survey.

At Malacañang, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said the administration can still win over the “undecided” by vigorously implementing priority programs.

Based on the SWS survey published yesterday in the newspaper BusinessWorld, Aquino’s satisfaction ratings dropped across all geographical areas and socioeconomic classes.
In the December 2014 SWS survey, 63 percent expressed satisfaction with Aquino’s work, 24 percent were dissatisfied and 14 percent undecided.

Trash and abandoned supplies left behind by climbers on Mount Everest. (Photo: Barry C. Bishop/National Geographic/Getty Images)

Every year, more than 300 climbers attempt the daring and dangerous feat of scaling Mount Everest. These mountaineers are usually joined by just as many sherpas who are responsible for guiding the expeditions up the peaks.

Over the years, these groups of explorers have left behind huge amounts of trash on the mountain â€" everything from tents, equipment and clothing to plastic bottles, tins and food packets. There is also an insane amount of human feces that have accumulated in the base camps and camping sites on the climbing routes. Because of the amount of buildup, Mount Everest is now being referred to as the World’s Highest Junkyard.

The situation has become such that the levels of toxic waste are now threatening the ecosystem and could potentially spread disease down through mountain streams to local communities living at the foot of the range. Nepal has now introduced very strict penalties on groups littering the natural wonder and religious site, introducing a rule that requires a $4,000 deposit which is forfeited should a climber fail to bring back an 8-kilogram bag of trash and human waste to the base camp.

The Indian Army is also planning several clean up operations this climbing season, which runs from March to May.

“So that it will not remain as pending. In other words, bury it,” niingon si dela Cerna.

"Manila, by pushing forward with the arbitral proceeding despite strong objection from Beijing, has been acting like a crying baby," China's official New China News Agency said in a December commentary.

Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam claim full or partial sovereignty over the South China Sea, and Japan is sparring with China over claims to the East China Sea. Manila's U.N. action "contributes to the maintenance and enhancement of the international order in the region based on the rule of law," Japan's foreign ministry said in a supportive statement last year.

Japan had agreed to work out a military base agreement with the Philippines in 2013 after Defense Minister Voltaire Gazmin called China a "bully at our doorstep." Last year, Manila handed Tokyo a wish list of military equipment after Japan said it would revise policies that have long prohibited weapons exports.

"I think it is probably accurate to say that what the Philippines has done is to internationalize the issue more than anyone else, and that has raised the ire of China," said Carl Baker, director of programs at the Washington, D.C.-based Pacific Forum CSIS think tank.

"I think China is pretty comfortable with its position and will continue to change 'facts on the ground' by sustaining patrols in the region to protect and police fishing," Baker said. "In the meantime, the Philippine government is clearly working to bolster relations with [other countries] to offset the Chinese influence."

After a Chinese national was shot in the Philippines in September, China cautioned its citizens against travel to the archipelago, which is only an hour's flight from China's south coast. Earlier that month, Philippine authorities had arrested three Filipinos suspected of planning a bomb attack against Chinese interests in Manila.

In November, the Philippines fined nine Chinese fishermen $103,000 apiece for poaching and taking endangered giant sea turtles from a tract of the disputed sea, stirring new anger against China and rekindling resentment of ethnic Chinese workers in the Philippines, from smugglers of fake goods in Manila's markets to some of the country's richest business people.

Two years ago, the Philippines made what may be its boldest move against China, generating support at home and among neighbors. It filed for arbitration in a United Nations court, arguing that China's basis for claiming the disputed ocean was inconsistent with the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Beijing has declined to meet the Philippines in the U.N. Permanent Court of Arbitration, saying the body lacks authority to settle South China Sea issues. Beijing has historically preferred bilateral talks over international dispute-resolution procedures. Manila is still pushing for a solution from the U.N. court.

The dispute grew nasty in April 2012 when Manila detained eight Chinese fishing boats near a tiny South China Sea shoal 130 miles west of the Philippines' main island, Luzon. Government inspectors said they found illegally collected marine life in the Chinese boats.

China responded by reducing fruit imports from the Philippines and scaling back tourism to the archipelago.

In April 2014, Manila signed a 10-year Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement with the United States, allowing an unspecified number of American troops to be stationed in the Philippines. The United States had troops here for nearly a century until 1992, when they were withdrawn at the behest of officials in Manila who saw them as a throwback to colonialism.

"There's something to be said for being militarily aligned with the United States that gives the Philippines a bit more gumption," said Abigail Magalong, an analyst with U.S.-based, Southeast Asia-focused business consultancy Cascade Asia Advisors.

China was the Philippines' No. 1 source of imported goods and its No. 3 export destination in 2013. But the $294-billion Philippine economy depends more on the service industry â€" such as call centers for Western multinationals â€" as well as remittances from millions of Filipino workers based overseas, from Dubai to the United States, but not mainland China.

China's moves to explore for oil and undertake land reclamation projects on contested islets in the South China Sea have upset a number of its neighbors, including Vietnam. But none has taken a tougher stance against Beijing's moves than the Philippines.

The archipelago has shaped up as the loudest voice in Southeast Asia against China's show of strength in the Pacific. The Philippines has detained Chinese boats, arrested fishermen and lodged a formal United Nations protest against Beijing.

Manila's boldness is underpinned by two facts: Unlike many of China's neighbors, the Philippines has relatively little to lose if Beijing retaliates economically. And, unlike several South China Sea neighbors, the Philippines enjoys military support from the United States.

"If they think they can scare people here and have them change their minds about the sovereignty issue, I don't think so," said Ramon Casiple, a political commentator and executive director of the Philippine advocacy group Institute for Political and Electoral Reform. "The economic factors that are the basis for economic growth today are not based on China."

The friction between China and the Philippines stems from decades-old competing claims to parts of the 1.4-million-square-mile South China Sea. Both nations fish there and want to lay claim to some of what the U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates is 11 billion barrels of oil and 190 trillion cubic feet of natural gas under the ocean floor.
