Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario is still the richest member of President Aquino’s Cabinet, with his total net worth reaching more than P838 million in 2014.

Based on his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN), Del Rosario’s net worth increased by P73 million or 8.7 percent from P765,379,281.02 in 2013 to P838,809,918.82 in 2014.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro, meanwhile, remains the poorest Cabinet member, with his net worth slightly increasing from P433,392.17 in 2013 to P471,064.46 in 2014.

Del Rosario’s wealth, as his SALN would show, came from his investments in marketable securities, stocks, real estate and various businesses.

Del Rosario was a successful businessman before entering public service as Philippine ambassador to the United States and eventually as foreign secretary. His businesses include insurance, banking, real estate, shipping, telecommunications, consumer products, retail, pharmaceutical and food industries.

He served as head of various private companies, such as the Gotuaco, Del Rosario Insurance Brokers Inc., Philippine Telecommunications Investment Corp., and Philippine Stratbase Consultancy Inc.

Del Rosario was also director of several other businesses engaged in infrastructure, property development, mass media, communications and mining.

Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima is back to being the second richest in the Cabinet, with a net worth of P298,940,320 in 2014 from P278, 947,249 in 2013. He was previously dislodged by Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, who is now third richest with a net worth of P283,425,800 in 2014 from P282,466,800 in 2013.

Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II remains the fourth richest with a net worth of P202,080,452.71 from P211,027,479.88 in 2013, lower by about P8.9 million.

Trade Secretary Gregory Domingo, fifth in the list, reported a net worth of P148,636,967.00 from P150,641,395 in 2013.

Nairobi, May 27 (ANI): A Kenyan lawyer has asked for President Barack Obama's elder daughter Malia's hand in marriage, and is ready to offer the US First Family 50 cows, 70 sheep and 30 goats as bride price.

Kiprono said it was in 2008 that Maila had caught his eye, and he hasn't dated anyone as a promise to be faithful to her. He wanted to put his "dream request" in front of Obama when he visits in July, The Nairobian reported.

He added that his love was real and even his family was onboard, totally backing him in offering more price.

Kiprono, who claims to be writing a letter to the US president asking him to bring Malia, 16, on the trip, said that if Obama accepted his marriage request, he would propose to her with his "out of the box" idea of mursik, the traditional Kalenjin sour milk instead of champagne, and tie the sacred plant, sinendet, around her head, as an indication that she was "his queen."

Kiprono had made headlines when he moved to court seeking to have William Ruto sworn in as president when Uhuru travelled to The Hague for his ICC case. (ANI)

You do look a little ill.

But we can do something about that, now.

Can’t we.

The fact is you’re a shocking wreck.

Do you hear me.

You aren’t all alone.

And you could use some help today, packing in the
dark, boarding buses north, putting the seat back and
grinning with terror flowing over your legs through
your fingers and hair . . .

I was always waiting, always here.

Know anyone else who can say that.

My advice to you is think of her for what she is:
one more name cut in the scar of your tongue.

What was it you said, “To rather be harmed than
harm, is not abject.”

Please.

Can we be leaving now.

We like bus trips, remember. Together

we could watch these winter fields slip past, and
never care again,

think of it.

I don’t have to be anywhere.

In 1898, the United States intervened in the Cuban insurrection and launched the Spanishâ€"American War to force Spain out. According to the terms of the Treaty of Paris, Spain relinquished sovereignty over Cuba and ceded the Philippine Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam to the United States. The terms of cession for the Philippines involved a payment of the sum of $20 million by the United States to Spain. The treaty was highly contentious and denounced by William Jennings Bryan, who tried to make it a central issue in the 1900 election. He was defeated in landslide by McKinley.

The Teller Amendment, passed unanimously by the U.S. Senate before the war, which proclaimed Cuba "free and independent", forestalled annexation of the island. The Platt Amendment (1902), however, established Cuba as a virtual protectorate of the United States.

The acquisition of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines after the war with Spain marked a new chapter in U.S. history. Traditionally, territories were acquired by the United States for the purpose of becoming new states on equal footing with already existing states. These islands, however, were acquired as colonies rather than prospective states. The process was validated by the Insular Cases. The Supreme Court ruled that full constitutional rights did not automatically extend to all areas under American control. Nevertheless, in 1917, Puerto Ricans were all made full American citizens via the Jones Act. This also provided for a popularly elected legislature, a bill of rights and authorized the election of a Resident Commissioner who has a voice (but no vote) in Congress.

According to Frederick Merk these colonial acquisitions marked a break from the original intention of manifest destiny. Previously, "Manifest Destiny had contained a principle so fundamental that a Calhoun and an O'Sullivan could agree on itâ€"that a people not capable of rising to statehood should never be annexed. That was the principle thrown overboard by the imperialism of 1899." Albert J. Beveridge maintained the contrary at his September 25, 1900, speech in the Auditorium, at Chicago. He declared that the current desire for Cuba and the other acquired territories was identical to the views expressed by Washington, Jefferson and Marshall. Moreover, "the sovereignty of the Stars and Stripes can be nothing but a blessing to any people and to any land." The Philippines was eventually given its independence in 1946; Guam and Puerto Rico have special status to this day, but all their people have United States citizenship. --Wiki

(JFT/Hershyl Jade Roxas & Robhe Jane Yara-CNU Comm Interns/GPL)

At the St. Louis fair Ota Benga and his companions found themselves living alongside a rich but eclectic sampling of aboriginal people from everywhere: Ainus from Japan, Patagonian “giants” from South America, Kwakiutls from the Northwest Coast (who had to ask for a stockade to shield their baskets and totem poles from what they tactfully called the white man’s “taking qualities”), Igorots from the Philippines, allowed to appear in their traditional loincloths only over the objections of Theodore Roosevelt, who argued that trousers would be more likely to reassure any visitors who still harbored doubts about the wisdom of acquiring the Philippines.

On with our gripping tale...

One of them was Ota Benga. He had been out hunting when forces in the pay of Belgium, on the prowl for rumored ivory, butchered his hunting band, including his wife and children. By the time Verner happened upon him he had become a slave of the Baschilele people and had little to lose by crossing the great water. Verner bought him with salt and a few yards of cloth.

Teeth sharpening is practiced by both men and women in the tribes of the Congolese Pygmies and the Mentawai people of Indonesia. Children from both of these tribes file their teeth as part of their spiritual practices and rites of passage â€"to prove themselves worthy to the tribe.

Samuel Verner was a high-strung South Carolinian, raised on Robinson Crusoeand the works of David Livingstone and Henry M. Stanley and trained for the mission field. He began his travels to the Congo region at twenty-two in search of souls but soon edged away from the church in favor of a series of schemes meant to lure investors to Africa that never quite came off. He was a vivid and prolific writer about his adventures and had brought back from his first expedition two Africans, and so in 1903, when the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, soon to open in St. Louis, wanted Pygmies imported for the area of the fairgrounds called the Anthropology Department, it seemed logical to turn to Verner.

He was given a sort of shopping list: twelve Pygmies, six more Africans of miscellaneous tribes, plus all the paraphernalia of daily living they would need to set themselves up as authentic exhibits in St. Louis. Verner did his best in the face of persistent fever, but in the end he could persuade just five Pygmies to accompany him to America.

Aquino: Philippines to fly usual routes over disputed reefs
By TERESA CEROJANO

MANILA, Philippines (AP) â€" Philippine aircraft will continue to fly their usual routes over disputed reefs in the South China Sea, the country's president said Monday, defying China's challenges to its planes and those of the United States.

President Benigno Aquino III told reporters there is no declared air defense identification zone over the area and "we will still fly the routes that we fly based on international law."

"We will still exercise our rights over our exclusive economic zone," he said, adding that the "bottom line is, it has to be clear, we will defend our rights to the best of our abilities."

Aquino also pointed to the disparity in the military strength of China and the Philippines, saying China should not bully a smaller country because it would hurt its image as it tries to create good will with its trading partners.

The Philippines is pursuing international arbitration and diplomatic efforts to try to resolve the territorial dispute with China.

It is a tribute to the astonishing resilience of the human spirit that the displaced Pygmy was ever even momentarily pleased, as a fascinating but flawed new book about him makes clear. Ota Benga: The Pygmy in the Zoo (St. Martin’s Press, 320 pages, $22.95) was written by Harvey Blume and Phillips Verner Bradford, the grandson of Samuel Phillips Verner, the missionary-adventurer who found the little man in the African forest and brought him back to the New Worldâ€"twice.

The Man in the Zoo
BY GEOFFREY C. WARD

On Sunday, September 9, 1906, a freshly painted sign greeted visitors to the Monkey House at the Bronx Zoological Gardens:

The African Pygmy, “Ota Benga.”
Age, 23 years. Height, 4 feet 11 inches.
Weight 103 pounds,
Brought from the Kasai River, Congo Free State, South Central Africa,
by Dr. Samuel P. Verner.
Exhibited each afternoon during September.

Inside, in a large open-air cage whose floor had been artfully strewn with bones to suggest its occupant’s supposed savagery, sat a diminutive man in a hammock, wearing a jacket and trousers but no shoes, quietly weaving mats and occasionally getting up to shoot arrows at a bale of hay. Late in the day an orangutan was let into the cage, and man and ape were encouraged to play together, hugging and chasing each another while the mostly white crowd laughed and applauded: ”. . . the pygmy was not much taller than the orangutan,” The New York Times reported, “and one had a good opportunity to study their points of resemblance. Their heads are much alike, and both grin in the same way when pleased.”

O Romeo, Romeo,
wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name,
Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.

Juliet speaks these lines, perhaps the most famous in the play, in the balcony scene (2.1.74â€"78). Leaning out of her upstairs window, unaware that Romeo is below in the orchard, she asks why Romeo must be Romeoâ€"why he must be a Montague, the son of her family’s greatest enemy (“wherefore” means “why,” not “where”; Juliet is not, as is often assumed, asking where Romeo is). Still unaware of Romeo’s presence, she asks him to deny his family for her love. She adds, however, that if he will not, she will deny her family in order to be with him if he merely tells her that he loves her.

A major theme in Romeo and Juliet is the tension between social and family identity (represented by one’s name) and one’s inner identity. Juliet believes that love stems from one’s inner identity, and that the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets is a product of the outer identity, based only on names. She thinks of Romeo in individual terms, and thus her love for him overrides her family’s hatred for the Montague name. She says that if Romeo were not called “Romeo” or “Montague,” he would still be the person she loves. “What’s in a name?” she asks. “That which we call a rose / By any other word would smell as sweet” (2.1.85â€"86). -- http://www.sparknotes.com/

O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?

This is one of Shakespeare's best known lines - from, of course, Romeo and Juliet, 1592.

The 'wherefore' here means why rather than where. What Juliet is asking, in allusion to the feud between her Capulet family and Romeo's Montague clan, is 'Romeo, why are you a Montague?'. Their love is impossible because of their family names and she asks him to change his allegiance, or else she will change hers. -- http://www.phrases.org.uk/

WHAT'S IN A NAME? THAT WHICH WE CALL A ROSE BY ANY OTHER WORD WOULD SMELL AS SWEET

If there's such a thing as generic Shakespeare today, this is it. Both "What's in a name?" and "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" are Instant Bard, although the latter is, as many forget, merely a paraphrase. From the romantic declamation to the crass advertisement, these phrases have served generations with complete flexibility.

"What's in a name?" is the less specific of the two phrases, and also the less common. Juliet here merely rehearses in a different form the point of "What's a Montague," moving, like a good Renaissance student, from the particular to the general. Names in general, she insists, ought to be separable from the things they name. Romeo never does change his name, and it wouldn't have done much good anyway. Whether or not he's essentially a Montague, and Juliet essentially a Capulet, their families will continue to act that way.

"That which we call a rose/ By any other word would smell as sweet" seems bloated to the modern ear. But we're accustomed to the paraphrase, which never occurred to the playwright or his audience. It's a little futile to second-guess Shakespeare now, but he did have to fill out a line and a half of blank verse. Regarding Juliet's use of "word" instead of "name," we can perhaps be grateful; she already uses "name" six times in fifteen and a half lines. -- http://www.enotes.com/

In the most famous scene of the play, Romeo stands unnoticed beneath Juliet's balcony as she engages in a fantasized debate. She questions the purpose of Romeo's being Romeoâ€"something he's probably taken for granted all these years. That Romeo is Romeo creates a few rather touchy problems for the new lovebirds. To be Romeo is to be a Montague while to be Juliet is to be a Capulet, and the Montagues and Capulets have a nasty history of killing off one another. Juliet fancies that family identity can be changed along with one's name, and family fueds thus nullified.

O ROMEO, ROMEO, WHEREFORE ART THOU ROMEO?

Although we use "wherefore," if at all, as a synonym for "why," Juliet uses the word in a more limited sense. By "wherefore?" Juliet means "for what purpose?" If she had merely asked "Why art thou Romeo?" she wouldn't be distinguishing the two major meanings of "why"â€""from what cause" (in the past) and "for what purpose" (in the future). "Wherefore" clearly emphasizes the latter sense, which is why "whys and wherefores" are different things.

"Wherefore" and its partner "therefore" reflect the basic tendency of English to use spatial ideasâ€""where?" "there"â€"to represent logical ideas, such as cause and effect.

Juliet:
O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name;
Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love
And I'll no longer be a Capulet.

Romeo:
[Aside] Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?

Juliet:
'Tis but thy name that is my enemy:
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? It is nor hand nor foot,
Nor arm nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O be some other name!
What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other word would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
and for thy name, which is no part of thee,
Take all myself.

Philippine Star â€" Sat, May 23, 2015

WASHINGTON â€" The United States military will continue air and sea patrols in international waters even after the Chinese navy repeatedly warned a US surveillance plane to leave the airspace over artificial islands China is creating in the disputed South China Sea.

The Philippine government also declared it would continue activities in the region, calling on China to respect freedom of navigation and aviation.

“Our position on the importance of letting freedom of navigation, freedom of aviation and international law prevail in the area we are talking about does not change. That is why this is not affected by the new development,” Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. told a press briefing yesterday.

“Our position on this matter is consistent and resolute. While we recognize that there is tension, we will remain assertive and determined to push for our position by adhering to international law,” Coloma said.

US State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said it was unclear on what basis the Chinese navy issued the warning to a US military plane that was flying over the Spratlys in the South China Sea.

Harf said the verbal warnings aired by the Chinese to the US plane could not be classified as a confrontation.

The incident, along with recent Chinese warnings to Philippine military aircraft to leave areas around the Spratly archipelago in the South China Sea, suggested Beijing is trying to enforce a military exclusion zone above its new islands there.

Recent satellite images suggest China has made rapid progress in filling in land in contested territory in the Spratly islands and in building an airstrip suitable for military use and that it may be planning another.

Woman says she killed cats because grandchildren wouldn’t clean rooms
http://fox2now.com/
POSTED 1:40 PM, MAY 19, 2015, BY REBECCA ROBERTS

GODFREY, IL (KTVI) â€" A kitten-killing grandmother is behind bars in Madison County. Investigators say the Godfrey woman killed her granddaughter’s cat and four kittens with a hammer, to teach her grand kids a lesson. The animal abuse was discovered at the family’s home on the 5000-block of West Victor Drive.

On Monday evening, the 13 year-old granddaughter opened the freezer, looking for a snack, and made a nauseating discovery.  There was her beloved cat, dead inside the freezer.  The girl texted a relative, who called police.

Madison County investigators arrived, and asked the girl what happened. Her grandma immediately piped in.  Seventy-one year-old Josephine Bell said she killed the cat, and its four kittens, all because the kids wouldn’t clean their rooms.

The 71 year-old is now charged with Aggravated Animal Cruelty, and could face 1 to 3 years in prison.

Captain Mike Dixon with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department says, “Without a substantial criminal history, she likely could be looking at probation and fines for this case. But hopefully it brings about a change in demeanor, and this kind of behavior doesn’t happen again for the benefit of these children, is what ultimately I think most of us would hope for.”

Bell stated she killed the cats on Sunday, and threw the kittens in the garbage.  They were never located by investigators.

It seems the well-being of the family pets was in question even before this cat-killing.  Last week, investigators say Animal Control took a dog from the home, and offered to take the other animals as well, but the family refused.

(BANAT NEWS)

(BANAT NEWS)

ECUANDUREO, Mexico (AP) â€" At least 43 people died Friday in what authorities described as a fierce, three-hour gunbattle between federal forces and suspected drug gang gunmen on a ranch in western Mexico, the deadliest such confrontation in recent memory.

New cartel arises from Mexico's assault on big drug lords Associated Press
All the dead were suspected criminals except for one federal police officer, National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido said. He said the officer died trying to help a colleague wounded in the shootout.

Photographs from the scene showed bodies, some with semi-automatic rifles and others without weapons, lying in fields, near farm equipment and on a blood-stained patio strewn with clothes, mattresses and sleeping bags. Video obtained by The Associated Press showed federal police coming under fire and bodies strewn throughout a ranch.

In English punctuation, a serial comma or series comma (also called Oxford comma) is a comma placed immediately before the coordinating conjunction (usually and, or, or nor) in a series of three or more terms. For example, a list of three countries might be punctuated either as "France, Italy, and Spain" (with the serial comma), or as "France, Italy and Spain" (without the serial comma). --Wiki
